is anyone else annoyed that "ai" encompasses both chatgpt and tools we train to do repetitive tedious work for us. and by the ripple effect of articles like "scientists develop ai to detect cancer early" that make people argue for the merit of chatgpt or become anti-medicine. and by the general state of the world and society
EXTREMELY SO.
It's very frustrating even on small-scale things that don't hurt people.
"This video game's AI sucks" "of course it does, it's using fancy autocomplete" "no? I meant the program that decides if the NPC should shoot or run away isn't very good"

"The America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries."
-Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country
Also like. Astarion would not be getting two books and all the merch and whatever the fuck if fandom had not blown up around him. If fandom had reacted the same way to Wyll, do you think Larian would have kept neglecting him? Again, don’t want to absolve creators—especially corporate ones—of responsibility here. But a lot of fandom rhetoric calls them out in ways that passively shirk our own role in erasure.
Preemptive not saying you’re obligated to stan Wyll and ignore Astarion or that that would be at all productive or helpful. Fandom is not charity work, you should engage with the characters it’s fun to engage with. But I don’t think this uneven spread of engagement that occurs in fandom after fandom after fandom is natural or objective. Especially when it occurs in societies where people have been socialized to have low expectations of poc, and to minimize their personhood. What could be useful is being introspective on what kind of characters we fixate on and why, and actually incorporating those insights into how we consume media going forward.

"I don't have a choice, I'm just following orders"
Have you considered smoking one (1) joint?
Like, it truly is that easy to not go do atrocities
"I'll get dishonorably discharged"
Okay at least you wont be killing innocents in the name of imperialism
"I'll go to jail"
Okay so you'd rather go and kill innocent people to avoid a little prison time? You could just go to jail rather than go do atrocities
Note from someone who knows: Neither of these things will even happen, you’ll be administratively separated, which is essentially a faultless parting of ways. Sure, they’ll try to intimidate you with the worst case scenario but at the end of the day pissing hot isn’t actually a crime so without getting you for possession or something the worst they can reasonably do is just make you leave.
Take it from someone who’s seen it happen in real life. They’ll just send you home. Save up for a plane ticket while they’re doing the paperwork.
From someone else who watched it happen many times: You're getting an article 15 for it, same as the guy who couldn't pass his PT test or the guy who got a tattoo without a permission slip from uncle sam. It's NOT a big deal and they are not gonna want to bother with a full court martial required for a dishonorable discharge. It's career ending, but has far less of an effect on your world than lifelong ptsd and guilt.

if you want to experience life more deeply you have to find more beauty. stop training yourself to dismiss, to mock, to assume the worst all the time — when you do this you build walls between yourself and the world. and after a while you stop feeling the warmth of it entirely.
beauty requires openness. it asks you to let things reach you, to soften enough to be moved. it’s not naive to see beauty everywhere—it’s a skill, a form of intelligence, a kind of quiet bravery. because it is so much easier to critique than to create, to detach than to engage, to dismiss than to love.
let yourself be affected. let yourself find things beautiful and let that be enough. life is not asking you to be cool, sitting on the sidelines and nitpicking everything. it’s asking you to see life and experience it fully.

not even joking this is one of the worst possible changes that i could've reasonably conceived of to happen to video games.
having thought about it this is a generationally anti-consumer announcement that will have a profoundly detrimental impact on consumers and retail markets. this will price out new consumers even more than a $600 PS5 and $80 games will. this will make games less accessible and more nickel-and-dimed. this will make games impossible to share irl without giving your console up, and will stop institutions like libraries from being able to loan copies of modern games. and most importantly, it will be for a minimal profit, as most of the sales in video games are already digital.
this is such a staggeringly catastrophic piece of news that i'm shocked it wasn't said by nintendo. congrats to sony for one-upping them in anti-consumer practices.
