I’d like to add this photo I took last night in Victoria of the statue of Captain Cook. Though I myself am not indigenous, I 100% agree that these murderers, kidnappers and rapists shouldn’t have huge statues and plaques that decorate them and say how “great” they were.

People need to see this. Not just quickly glance at the photos and keep on scrolling. They need to see this.

I went to a “Cancel Canada Day” event and burst into tears - not because I was surprised to learn of the unmarked graves (survivors told us they were there. Our government pushed it aside, and we let them), but because seeing all the people gathered in mourning drove it home: They. Were. Children.

This is my country’s legacy - and it’s not history. The last schools closed during my lifetime. My Father went to school with students who lived at the local residential school, after it was changed to a boarding house (read: holding centre) for indigenous youth who went to local schools.

I have two main reasons! The first, is that most people's surgery scars don't heal as perfect symmetrical lines across their chest. Even when you take a long time to rest and are very careful about your movement post-op, it's very likely you'll have at least some stretching or pulling. The way the scar meets the skin around it is rarely smooth, and the way I draw scars is an interpretation of that.

The second, and more important reason: It looks sick as hell!!! That's it! It's a stylistic choice, the way it flows with the figure and takes up more visual space is something that I've found I really like! Sometimes I draw them in the shapes of stars, sometimes with flowers and leaves growing out of them! The point has never been to draw hyper realistic scars, as my art style is not in anyway trying to achieve hyper realism.

Here's an example of some other ways one might draw top surgery scars, on my recent piece. All options are fine! But to me, the middle is the strongest. I also find simple lines to look almost more like open wounds, so it's just not my preference :)

CO2 poisoning

Oxygen deprivation

Dehydration

Starvation

Concussion

Probably bruised ribs

Burns

Loss of an arm

Decompression sickness (he was basically dead from the start apparently)

Sleep depravation

Isolation

Constant adrenaline/panic

Whatever the hell the blood was doing to him

Hallucinations

Coughing up blood (I think more than once)
