This week's writing update, on Patreon...free to read.
As I suspected, productivity was pretty limited this week due to working on the house. Which had a lot of challenges of its own going on. Th
Pivoting So Hard My Head Keeps Spinning
2026 is definitely turning out to be the year where I spend a lot of my time pivoting in how Iām managing my writingāboth from a business perspective and from a drafting perspective.
First, the apparent failure to launch of the first book of Goddessās Vision, Vision of Alliance, back in February had me determined to go a different path instead of immediately leaping into drafting book two, Vision of Chaos. I had originally planned the same sort of rapid release strategy Iād used with the different Martiniere series where I would write the connected books one right after the other, then release them close to each other. However, low sales and the struggles I was having with the story made me put Chaos aside and look at several other projects Iād been considering to work on once I was done with Goddessās Vision.
It also didnāt help that I was heavily into helping husband with a house renovation project. That work kept me from promoting Vision of Alliance as aggressively as I could push it, as well as slowed my work on Chaos.
Iād just about settled on an alternative project once we were done with that house renovation when two things happened. First, Draft2Digital made the unwise decision to charge their lower income accounts a so-called āaccount maintenance feeā (I still doubt their alleged rationale for doing this but thatās no longer an issue as far as I was concerned). That meant I spent the next two months redoing my catalog of 32 books, updating back matter and in some cases making new covers, assigning ISBNs to ebooks, and setting up direct sales accounts with Barnes and Noble, Apple, Kobo, Google Play, and Itch (well, Itch had been happening since earlier). I also reissued everything but the novellas in hardcover. This move from D2D wasnāt just fueled by the fee, howeverāa look at my sales records for the past six years showed an increasing decline in sales through them. Not good. A third driver was discovering that the universal sales links through Draft2Digital that I was using for promotion werenāt working part of the time. Combine the three, and that meant I needed to leave D2D. So. That got done.
Then, a family situation meant that we took on a new house renovation project on the other side of the state. Arrgh. I was incredibly frustrated, butāby setting up a Patreon, I figured out how I could schedule my work, keep working on writing andā¦serialize multiple works as well as making my previously published short stories available. So I did that, and Iām working now on getting all of that put together. Iāve been happy with the Patreon experience and I have a handful of subscribersāI view developing my Patreon as a long term project, so adding the solicitation for that will be part of the next round of book back matter updates.
These things come in threes, of course. I post this content in multiple places for visibilityās sakeāmy website blog, Dreamwidth, Ko-fi and, until today, Substack. Then Substack announced they were allowing anyone to use Pangram to check posts for evidence of generative AI usage in writing.
Iām not a fan of the use of generative AI/LLMs, but this piece? No. Hell no. I was just starting to teach when the Turnitin plagiarism detector was being promoted, but had heard far too much about false positives. Iāve heard the same issue about Pangram, plusā¦a lot of my work has already been scraped for AI training.
No. Hell no.
As a result, Iām now modifying my blogging strategy. Instead of posting the whole blog on Substack, Iām now just posting links to the places where others can read it. Iām also throwing Tumblr into the mix, despite some doubts about its security.
But Iām annoyed. Beyond annoyed, really, because this is just too damned much.
Iād like the publishing business to settle down for a while, ākay? Maybe not be so much of a whipsaw back and forth?
I know Iām dreaming, butā¦hope reigns eternal. *******************
Like my blogging? Then check out my fiction-oriented Patreon! All of my current work in progress is serialized there, along with weekly updates on my writing progress (or lack thereof). Current projects in serialization include the second book in the Goddessās Vision trilogy, VISION OF CHAOS; a memoir about the horses in my life; monthly reposts of previously published short stories (and eventually unpublished works); and the development and creation of a neoWestern time travel multiverse novella series, Vortex Worlds. Prices range from free to $7 a month to get EVERYTHING from my posts. Everything but the short story tier and the weekly updates is posted on an alternate weekly basis, though that may change as I write more.

Well. I'm back.
Guess I'm gonna quote Samwise Gamgee there. One reason I've not been super-active here on Tumblr has been an issue of time--older person, husband's involved in house reno projects (yes, plural) that I'm helping him with, and time has been an issue. Additionally, I have three main projects I'm juggling, plus I wanted to find a place for my short stories whose assorted online homes aren't around anymore.
I'm dealing with that in part by setting up a Patreon for my fiction. Tiers are pretty simple because I have one for each different project plus the fiction. First tier--which has an optional $1 level--is simply a weekly writing update. Next is the short story reprint level, at $2 for once a month posting. I'm working on a horse memoir, which posts every other week, and that's $3. I'm developing a neoWestern multiverse time travel novella series that is exploring North American settlement in a way, and sharing my plans, worldbuilding, and outlines there every other week (staggered with the other tiers, most you'll get a month is one week of three posts if you subscribe to every single one). That tier's also $3. Then I'm posting chapters/chapter portions of the fantasy novel-in-progress (rough draft version) every other week for $4. Or you can get everything for $7.
Basically, I'm just asking for patronage. I haven't figured out yet what I'll do for subscribers to the assorted tiers once I finish the work that tier covers--a special annotated ebook edition? Possibly a special hardcover edition? Nonetheless, there will be an award for my supporters. I just don't know what it is yet.
But I have lots of time. The earliest any of this stuff is going to be published is next year, maybe sooner for the novella series.
In the meantime, if you would like to support my Patreon, even if it's just a free subscription to the weekly public posts, check it out here!:

Well, guess I'm back. Substack's latest AI shenanigans means that...well, I'm back. But hey! I have a Patreon now. And maybe I'll just replace the Substack mirror of my blog posts with a Tumblr mirror.

Writing Advice that Will Save You from Crying over Chapter 3 Again
ā½ Sometimes āwriterās blockā is actually justĀ your story being brokenĀ and your brain knowing before you do. Respect the vibes, go back. Something stinks.
ā½ If youāre stuck in the middle,Ā skip to the part youāre excited to write. Chronological writing is aĀ suggestion,Ā not a law.
ā½ āKill your darlingsā is not about deleting every cool thing you love. Itās about not hoarding scenes like a dragon with dialogue you wrote in 2017 that doesnāt even make sense anymore.
ā½ You do not need to write like your favorite author. You need to write likeĀ you,Ā caffeinated and slightly unstable.
ā½ Talking to yourself in the mirror as your characterĀ is not weird. Itās called method writing. Youāre not unhinged, youāreĀ dedicated.
ā½ Aesthetic Pinterest boards and playlistsĀ are writing progressĀ if they make you feel like a god again.
ā½ You can write the climax before you finish Act 1. You can rewrite Chapter 1 thirty times and then delete it anyway. Youāre not behind, youāre in hell with the rest of us.
Youāre allowed to write stuff thatās not āmarketable.ā Youāre allowed to be weird. Write the story that would makeĀ you feel seen. The niche finds its freaks.
ā½ Beta readers are not gods.Ā Take what resonates, ignore what doesnāt. If five people say your story drags at Chapter 8? Maybe listen. If one person says āmake it all about the dog,ā maybe donāt.
As a professional author, cosigning all of this 1000000%, especially that first point that "writer's block" is sometimes your brain knowing something is broken.
It took me SO FUCKING LONG to learn what that reaction looks/feels like in my mind and body (for example: exasperated boredom of the story, generalized feeling of resentment and peevishness at myself, existential despair every time i look at the document, physical exhaustion or a vague weighty feeling like I'm carrying something heavy, or even just a vibe of "mehhhh don't really feel like it" that goes on longer than a couple days). Once I learned to recognize those signs and translate them to "Oh, did I fuck up four paragraphs ago? Whoops, I sure did!!!", my quality-of-life and my writing output (and my joy in the work) improved DRAMATICALLY.
Almost everything above is right on.
Also: in my experience, anyway, āwriterās blockā isnāt really the writerās: itās a characterās. Somewhere thereās usually a conversationāwith another character, with you, with the plotāthat a significant character is trying to avoid having. (Or that you havenāt worked out that they need to have before the writing can continue.) Go find out what that conversation is, and have it, and the āblockā will evaporate.
Everything here is true.
In my case what I've discovered is that writer's block points to something that needs to be done in the story--either I've gone off on a wrong tangent, or I've left a big hole in the plot or character development, or there's some part of the world that needs to be redeveloped.
Sometimes it's also an issue of too much summarizing, and skipping over scenes that should be more fleshed out.
SARAH STEPHENS IS NOT YOUR AI GRANDMA
some thoughts about digital personalities in my work
(self-indulgent blather about my take on artificial digital beings, as Iāve written them)
Iāve been watching the latest AI developments with a somewhatā¦oh, what word do I want? Not jaded, not cynical, but definitely somewhere in between. Especially when I start reading about āAI Grandmasā and the use of that tech to speak to long-dead relatives. Oh, itās presented with that same amber glossiness that seems to dominate the worlds of AI visual creations. Butā¦weāre already seeing some of the dark side of these AI creations with reports of self-harm and worse coming from AI āpersonalities.ā
One reason for my attitude is that the creation of self-aware digital personalities is something Iāve somewhat explored in my work, most notably the Netwalk Sequence series and the Martiniere Family Multiverse Saga. In both cases, the tech I explore is already somewhat different from what we are seeing. I donāt go into the nuts and bolts of just how that self-awareness ends up happening (well, a little bit in the Martinieres). But nonetheless, I think this dynamic of what that really looks like is something very much overlooked in the current hype around āpreserving the memories of your loved onesā in order to recreate them in a digital simulation. I can oh-so-easily see how it could turn bad.
What happens if AI Grandma is toxic? Or if AI Grandma develops sufficient self-awareness to start meddling in the affairs of her descendants? Itās entirely possible. And while AI Grandma might not have the ability with current tech to really muck up her descendantsā banking and financial historyā¦thereās still a lot of damage she can do to living beings.
The Netwalk Sequence was my first exploration of just what the problems with a separate digital personality creation could end up being. I started building the Netwalk Sequence world back in the ā90s, when digital personality uploads were somewhat the fashion in fiction and in theory.
My base assumption was that digital personalities could completely upload to the internet upon their death. In that world itās entirely possible to be a complete personality online, with full body immersion, using the mechanism of a highly sophisticated wireless communication chip implant called Netwalk. Uploading came later, in the midst of a dramatic political struggle where an older leaderāSarah Stephensāuploaded upon her death and began to stalk and attack her opponents. The new development was called Netwalk, and the uploaded personalities called Netwalkers.
A restraint that I created in the Netwalk universe was that Netwalkers would go insane and turn predatory on living beings if completely cut off from sensory inputs. They would attack alive users of Netwalk in order to gain sensory exposures and recharge themselvesāas well as fulfilling agendas and settling resentments that hadnāt been dealt with in life. In some cases this would end up as possession of the living being by the Netwalker. As a result, with the exception of a handful of rogues, Netwalkers ended up being tied to a living host, most specifically that hostās Netwalk chip. In the Sequence, we see is how this plays out within one powerful family, the creators and controllers of this technology. With some other dynamics thrown in as wellāthe control of a war machine of unknown origin which has some influence on the development of the original Netwalk, plus intensely weird family history that involves a lot of infighting and struggles over who controls what.
Thereās no grudge like a family grudge, shall we say?
In the Martiniere Multiverse, I postulate something closer to our current concept of the āAI Grandma,ā where videos and recordings lead to the creation of digital thought clones. Thought clone appearances in the Martiniere Multiverse arenāt constrained to computers and devices, however, and they can hop universes. This is somewhat connected to a magical Fae origin which is tied to a computer worm that can also skip through assorted multiverses.
The Martiniere digital thought clones (digis for short) differ from Netwalker personality uploads at death in that they are specifically digital constructs of a once-living personality, and only become activated upon specific actions by a living person who is keyed into the algorithm. The digis are fully aware that they are digital constructs and are not the uploaded personality of the dead person theyāre modeled after.
Digis donāt appear in every Martiniere book. To follow their development chronologically in series order, start with The Enduring Legacy, the fourth book of the Martiniere Legacy series. We see Gabriel Martiniereās first awareness of digis shortly before his death, when he ties the appearance of a dangerously destructive computer worm to specific holes in not just his memory but the memories of his closest family. Gabe takes the first steps to establish the bounds of his digi, with a specific activation algorithm tied to certain family members.
More details about digis and their creations happen in two of the Martiniere Legacy standalones, The Heritage of Michael Martiniere and Justine Fixes Everything: Reflections on Mortality. Heritage shows Gabeās activation; Justine goes into further complications. However, the most details and the most explicit multiversal version appears in the three books of The Cost of Power: Return, Crucible, and Redemption.
Like Netwalkers, digis are capable of possessing living beings and bending them to their will. There are malign digis and beneficial digis. We only see them in the context of one, powerful family because, in both cases, the artificial entities serve as chess pieces in ongoing family battles. They are obstacles that need to be navigated and overcome by the protagonists.
(Sarah Stephens and Philip Martiniere would probably strongly disagree with me butānothing says that they are pawns.)
Back in real life, Netwalk is probably not at all feasible, though digisā¦may be. Current technology doesnāt allow for digis to function the way I wrote them in the Martinieres, but some of the same issues raised by both Netwalk and digis still exist. The news has multiple examples of people being influenced by AI interactions to do harm, whether to themselves or others. Or of people who develop a strong emotional attachment to artificial beings to the detriment of their attachments to living beings.
Rather than the apocalyptic stuff I postulated in the Netwalk and Martiniere books, thatās the real harm in uncritical adoption of the creation of artificial beings. At what point do we slip from a clear awareness that āthis is a creation; this is not realā to uncritical acceptance of these creations as real beings?
What happens if we start treating these AI creations as something above and beyond an artificial construct?
What rights will they have as opposed to living humans? Or lack of rights?
What happens if they turn malign, either due to the manner in which they are constructed or due to abusive treatment from living humans? Then what?
All food for thought.
Meanwhile, the artificial beings I created in my own worlds are definitely not your happy-happy AI Grandmas. And at times, I wonder if those imperfect visions of mine may end up reflecting an actual reality.
We shall see.
Barker then turned his attention to his fellow author J.K. Rowling, who has had her fair share of controversy over the last few years over her opinions on the transgender community. āThereās a lot of pain amongst the transgender people that I know,ā Barker stated. āThey have a lot of issues in the world as it is, without a famous author opining on the subject. It just seems redundant. It just seems unkind.ā
Noting Rowlingās vast financial success, Barker felt that Rowlingās newfound position of fame ought to exclude her from discussing trans rights. He added, āIt really just seems redundant for a woman as successful, as validated in the world, as Ms Rowling, to be negative, to be disruptive if you will, to a very beaten up subculture. These are human beings. She has no right to opine, I think, upon the lives of human beings that she does not know.ā
āI feel very protective of people who are on the edge of our culture as gay people still are,ā Barker continued. āAnd certainly transgender people are on the edge of our culture. And here you have one of the most successful people in the frigging world ā Ms Rowling. Going after a very emotionally vulnerable portion of our culture. It just seems unnecessary and unfair.ā
Prejudice.
There's our Clive. Been a while since I've been in a bar with him, but I've always liked Clive. :)
Book Review: Inheritance: An Agripunk Thriller
This one was written by @jreynoldswardĀ
Inheritance: An Agripunk Thriller is the first installment of an adult cyberpunk novel series. In a future where most food is synthetic and people can be forced into indentured servitude, Ruby Barkley is doing her best as the owner of a horse ranch and former rodeo queen. When events reveal that her son, Brandon, is in trouble, she proves that she will do anything to protect her familyāeven if that means dealing with her cheating ex-husband, Gabe. Although, all might not be as it appears when even the rodeo itself is rife with politics and danger.Ā
This is a hard science fiction novel, so it was neat! The world is truly unique. As I mentioned with servitude, people can be turned into Indentureds, those who are unfortunate enough to be forced into a form of high-tech slavery. Even this has layers to it. There are body modifications that they are forced to undergo, such as limiting their caloric intake, making them androgynous, and more. What was especially concerning to me was how one of Rubyās friends revealed that these modifications donāt even have to be reversed when the servitude is paid off. Particularly outside of the U.S., itās common for these changes to remain with people forever. This could even lead to female Indentureds being forced to bear children for their former employers. Itās this level of detail which really kept me on edge. Rubyās plight is understandable because the world genuinely is terrifying. Real food is a scarcity, there are killbots that can attack people, and the threat of becoming an Indentured is always looming over the charactersā heads. Nothing feels safe because it isnāt. āThrillerā wasnāt put in the title for the sake of it.Ā
I thought the thriller elements were handled very nicely. The story is brimming with suspense. No one seems trustworthy. You have Rubyās friends practically warning her about even interacting with Gabe, the woman he cheated with who already has so much bad blood associated with her, and new threats for the characters. With the politics of the competition, it makes it feel like theyāre always being watched. You donāt know if theyāre safe to talk and if so, how much they should even say and to whom.Ā
Admittedly, there were times in the story where it went really fast in my opinion. When that happened, I felt more like a bystander than an active participant. Not much of the main competition itself is shown and there are some intense scenes where we just see the aftermath. The story is told from Rubyās perspective, so whenever she isnāt involved in something, neither are we. Because of that, I wish we got to sit in moments longer to really immerse ourselves in this world. Itās a creative universe that Iād love to explore with the characters.Ā
Overall, I think that sci-fi lovers would enjoy this a lot (bonus points if youāre a fan of horses!). Although there were not any explicit scenes in the story, there is a mature tone with themes of reclaiming the feeling of being beautiful and strong, reminiscing over old flames, and looking at what you would do for your child. If youāre interested in the series, I definitely suggest you check it out! Hereās the Amazon link!
A lovely review...thank you so much!
Whew.
It has been, one might say, quite a year so far. And thatās not even talking about political stuff. The overwhelming dominant theme so far has been the work on a house weāve been getting ready to sell. We bought it for a relative to stay in while finishing up their career before retirement. The interval between that purchase and going to sell the place led to some changes in the house and, well, our attempts last year went nowhere.
Major renovation work had to be done if we were going to get this place off of our books. While it is in a resort area, running the numbers didnāt show much if any of a benefit for running it as a short-term rental and itās a location where we didnāt really want to spend time ourselves. Long-term rental wasnāt something we wanted to do for very long, since weāre downsizing everything due to our ages.
So we sucked up and did the renovation. The big pieces were contracted out but some of the small repairs plus painting was a job we took on ourselves to save on expenses. Since the house was several hundred miles away, that meant traveling a lot. Because we are olds and sustaining a lot of effort for more than a few days was more than we could handle, this ended up taking more time than it might for a younger couple (and dealing with contractor schedules plus finding more things we wanted to fixā¦).
We started in January and finished in the first part of August. Dealing with this took a couple of weeks out of every month. That doesnāt seem like a lot until you factor in travel time, other things that had to be done, and recovery time. As a result, I really didnāt get much writing done this year to date.
Add to that some shifting in my volunteer work. I left one regional writing organization because it just wasnāt fitting my needs anymore and I felt as if I was putting in a lot of work for no return or recognition (acknowledgments and/or thank yous go a LONG way for hard-working volunteers. I wasnāt getting any of that plus credit for what I was doing kept being attributed to other people). Iām doing work for a couple of other writing organizations as well as my local Soroptimists and that ends up consuming time, too. However, I do feel recognized for that work and one big piece is starting to (hopefully) come into being.
And then thereās the horses. Managing Mocha in her last months (weāre discussing euthanasia scheduling with the people who will be handling that plus burial) is a challenge. She started going downhill last November when she sprouted new bone spurs on one arthritic knee and it just keeps getting worse. Keeping weight on her and providing limited pain relief (she has colicked on the best medication before so she only gets a half dose) has been a dance. The vet is firm that she shouldnāt go through another winter, and both vet and farrier have speculated about what an x-ray or ultrasound of that knee would reveal as far as twisty, weird bone formation goes.
This has also been the summer where I started serious arena schooling with Marker. The previous year and a half has been more about conditioning him and letting him grow up a bit mentally while establishing a lot of boundaries. In addition, the owner(s) before the person I bought him from let him get away with a lot of stuff. The owner before me started the hole-filling process in his training but didnāt necessarily have the time he required. Plus he needed a slower process due to a past significant neck injury. I really didnāt feel right asking him to collect up until he had the right kind of muscling in his neck andā¦that takes time to establish. But thatās another post!
Nonetheless, progress is happening. I took a class in July which resulted in the creation of an onboarding sequence for my monthly newsletter. A spinoff of that was making a batch of themed samplers to showcase my book catalog. That, along with house painting, sucked up July.
Ah well. Iāve survived all this.
Now itās time to get back to writing work, and catching up with household stuff that has been getting a lick and a promise since January. I also have a pile of sewing stuff that needs to be happening.
In the meantime, there are some story ideas simmering in my brain.
Onward.

Bilbo barely passed Old Took's record lifespan after having a supernaturally-life-extending ring for 60 years. which begs a question. what the hell did Old Took do
I have a theory that somewhere back up the line gandalf fucked a took. This sounds like complete crack but hear me out. The tooks are rumored to have āfairy bloodā which in LOTR terms means either elves or maia. There is an ancestor whoās unusually tall and many of them are noted to live unusually long lives unless they meet with illness or injury, same as the numenorians did. They donāt hve extra pointy ears and elves donāt have a special interest in the line. But who DOES have a special interest in looking after tooks (and bilbo who is a took on his motherās side/his adopted son frodo)? Gandalf. That dude is ALWAYS fussing over some silly little guy. He regularly brought the old took birthday presents.
Back in the day some bold hobbitess decided to climb that old man and ever since then gandalf has been looking after his line of tiny crazy bastards and no one will convince me otherwise.
Gandalf's attitude towards Pippin just took on a whole new layer.
As does Pippin grasping the Palantir and not immediately having his brain (and I use the term loosely) emptied out by Sauron.
(As an aside to up top, Bilbo probably could've lived a LOT longer but the ring-related psychological damage led him to take the offer of a ride to Elf Heaven. Smeagol could tell you how great a Ring-extended life tended to be.)
THE TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION TELLS CHUCK TINGLE TO STAY HOME BUT WE PROVE LOVE ANYWAY
just when you buckaroos thought 2024 would be a break from book drama, here comes chuck tingle in the mix. recently i was asked to be a featured speaker at the TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION annual conference. a few days ago they rescinded my invitation. here is what happened.
(EDITED TO ADD THIS LINK. if you have a hard time reading this on way of tumblr you can also read for free on chucks patreon)
i would like to start off by saying it is not my intent to start a fight, and all those reading this should know that the actions of a few misguided folks do not speak for the whole TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. i am sure there are many involved who will be very upset to learn what others at TLA have done in their name. there are many individuals here, so please do not paint them all as villains in your mind. besides, chuck loves the dang library everyone knows that.
the point of writing this is not to vilify. i am writing this is because MOMENTS OF DARKNESS are the best places to SHINE A LIGHT AND PROVE LOVE IS REAL. this is a perfect time for learning and growing and for us talk on some very important things that queer buckaroos and neurodivergent buckaroos face every day. this is an unfortunate moment that WE can turn around and use to prove love is real.
i am also writing this to understand some of my own personal feelings on the matter. for something that seems very simple on the surface, the trot is complex, and i am still working out my emotions on the whole dang thing. i am learning in this way.
PART ONE: BAG OF LOVE
a few months ago chuck was asked to be a featured speaker at the 2024 TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE. i have been asked to do things like the before and it is ALWAYS a fun time to meet bookseller and librarian buds. trotting around face to face and talking about my story of conquering chronic pain and overcoming my mental hurdles is VERY IMPORTANT to me. i say YES to these things whenever i can. (here i am with authors at CALIFORNIA INDEPENDENT BOOKSELLERS ALLIANCE conference. they are a WONDERFUL group and they proved love with their OWN invitation to chuck. this was such a moving event with so many amazing authors and stories. got very teared up during this photo)
ANYWAY BUCKAROOS i get the TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION invite and say 'YES BUD LETS TROT'. we are then confirmed.
months pass. a few weeks ago i get a call from my manager and agent and publisher saying āthe TLA have rescinded their invitation.ā
turns out some things had been going on behind the scenes
at some point the TLA asked chucks INCREDIBLE HEROIC BAD ASS PUBLISHER if chuck would be okay with not wearing the mask, to which tor/nightfire/macmillan said āwhat the heck are you talking about of course chuck is going to wear his mask. this is how chuck presents himselfā (NOT EXACT QUOTE)
as you all know, my pink bag way is a VERY IMPORTANT SPACE. as an autistic buckaroo it is a boundary that allows me to express myself freely and relieve my chronic pain from neurotypically masking all day. i have talked about this for years, and it is why i consider my private identity a SACRED THING. it is literally a health issue.
fortunately THE PINK BAG is never really a problem when making appearances. i have spent years going on television shows, doing interviews, speaking at other conferences and conventions, hosting book events on tour, and even MEETING WITH LAWYERS in my pink face covering. it is always respected and that is very validating to my way.
when arriving anywhere i always take precautions. i always warn buckaroos ahead of time that there is a masked man coming. i always have someone go in ahead of me JUST IN CASE. again, there has never been an issue. at a big conference where i am a special guest there is ESPECIALLY not an issue because my face and bio are printed IN THE DANG PROGRAM
SOME FUN TIMES AT BIG EVENTS BELOW:
CHUCK ON TV SHOW NAME OF 'AT MIDNIGHT' BACK BEFORE I WROTE LOVE IS REAL ON MY HEAD:
well, there has never been an issue.... UNTIL NOW.
PART TWO: RESCINDED
a few days ago TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION suddenly messaged my publishers and said that chuck tingle is no longer invited. my invitation was rescinded. the reason given was that people could possibly be uncomfortable with my mask
right out of the gate i would like to say this: it is absolutely the right of the texas library association to disinvite someone from their conference. it is their event, after all, and they can ban anyone they would like, for any reason.
of course, that doesnt mean other folks HEARING THIS NEWS wont have their own opinions the TLA choices. if the TLA disinvites someone, their reasoning for doing this can be discussed and analyzed. whether or not they follow their own guidelines can be questioned, and certainly their kindness and tact can be considered
there are a few BIG POINTS to make regarding this choice from the TLA
first and foremost, i just gotta say buckaroos, it is incredibly rude to invite someone to be a guest speaker at your event, have them confirm and mark off their calendar and turn down other offers, then rescind their invitation. this is maybe the simplest of the points, but it is an important one.
second, (DEEP BREATH HERE WE GO BUCKAROOS) i personally do not think of my autism as a disability very often, but i also KNOW that despite these feelings it ABSOLUTELY IS. autism is important to be listed as a recognized disability because of the help some autistic buckaroos need regarding government programs and things like that. ALSO just because my neurodivergence has helped me in some ways (hyperfocus and a unique artistic sensibility for example). i personally need to step back and remember my battle with stress and chronic pain from having to neurotypically mask all the time. for as much as i love being autistic it has made some things very difficult.
in other words, i am perfectly capable of speaking and interacting with folks without this pink bag on my head BUT WHEN I AM IN THE CHUCK TINGLE SPACE I REQUIRE IT. i can ONLY use this space while covering my face. is not a want. it is a need. holding this boundary is more important than i can ever say. i will not, and can not, let these spaces cross.
TLA not letting an autistic author wear the face cover theyve set up to express their neurodivergence in a safe, healthy way is--for lack of a better term--NOT A GOOD LOOK.
i cannot fathom them disinviting another author for using a disability aid. i cannot fathom them saying that a buckaroo who hears better with a hearing device cannot use it during their panel because it would make others 'uncomfortable'.
but here we are.
PART THREE: WHAT DOES A BUCKAROO GOTTA DO TO GET BANNED AROUND HERE?
this is the TLAs official stance on disability issues according to their website:
when poking around on the TLA website i noticed a few other things. i noticed a previous guest speaker wearing a niqab, and i was left wondering if the religious significance is what make that okay but chuck tingle banned. that made sense until i looked deeper and saw mascot buckaroos dressed up on the exhibition floor, and saw some kind of spiderbud in a costume contest. nobody around them seemed to be all that scared. their invitations REMAINED INTACT.
it should be mentioned here that AT ONE POINT during the discussions an email was sent from TLA saying chuck is allowed to come and wear his mask in the exhibition halls and smaller panels, just not at any of the big PAID PANELS i was once supposed to participate on. this was a confusing offer, but their explanation was that people who paid for something should have the option to not see chucks 'scary neurodivergence aid'. i tried to wrap my head around WHY they would make a distinction. maybe the exchange of money (rather than time) causes some kind of philosophical adjustment that i just cant grasp?
i wonder, would the author who wears a niqab ALSO be banned from the paid panels? i hope not
my answers trotted up short until i investigated deeper and found this quick moment from one of the TLA help videos. while some events DO require additional buckaroo cash, it actually appears that THE ENTIRE CONFERENCE IS TICKETED AND COSTS MONEY.
at this point i realized there is clearly no actual official policy about not covering your face (other than one from a few years ago saying that you HAVE to cover your face), and the addition of 'money' is a red herring. these excuses make no sense
PART FOUR: CLOSE THOSE GATES
it appears that my neurodivergence is 'scary' enough to get me uninvited, REGARDLESS what their disability and mask policies may say
BUT WHY? why is chucks preferred physical presentation valued SO little by the TLA that a THEORETICAL complaint is worth more? is my neurodivergent expression so awful? is my own safety as a queer activist such an afterthought?
is a pink bag with the words 'love is real' scrawled across the front REALLY going to frighten someone when the posters and pamphlets on the way into in panel would have a photo of my masked face saying THIS IS LITERALLY WHO IS ABOUT TO APPEAR BEFORE YOU.
if THAT accommodation is too much, would it really be so difficult to have someone trot out beforehand and make an announcement? to say 'there is someone on this upcoming panel who needs a mask to express this part of himself, if this makes you uncomfortable then this panel might not be for you'.
and really, i have to heckin ask, is this physical expression of my raw inner truth really so hideous and frightening that fear of making someone uncomfortable is a REAL problem?
(a terrifying display of autism. apparently)
i cannot imagine what kind of precautions they need to take before a stage play featuring costumes and masks.
you MIGHT think chucks queerness and left leaning politics could be the issue with this organization, but they have had drag queens as past speakers (also featuring some GLORIOUS makeup and hair that covers almost all of their faces. VERY CURIOUS). regardless, the TLA do not seem like a conservative bunch.
if you are bisexual or an autistic person who is good at 'passing' you probably already know where this is headed, your dang spiderbuckaroo senses are tingling at FULL ALERT. i will say i do not KNOW the real reason why i was uninvited, and i do not have enough information to make any concrete statement of the real answer. there is only evidence that masks have been fine at TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION events in the past, but not much else to go on.
so the FACTS part of our discussion ends there, but i think it opens us up to talk about some very important feelings that bisexual and autistic buckaroos know well.
THIS is where we take a unfortunate, hurtful moment and turn it into a discussion. this is where we prove love is real.
as someone who is constantly doubted and put through purity tests because of my unique way, we are pushing up against a subject i know well. thats right buckaroos: we are talking GATEKEEPING
AGAIN, i do not know if this is the answer, but someone in my position might be VERY STRONGLY INCLINED TO THINK that a few well-meaning left leaning buckaroos think i am a joke and that this is a character, and that there is something problematic about my work because i am not really a real person.
any upstanding left leaning organization would OF COURSE allow a mask for a neurodivergent buckaroo with an unusual visual presentation, an autistic buckaroo who conquered his chronic pain ONLY by creating this important space... but what about a FAKE autistic buckaroo?
any upstanding left leaning organization would OF COURSE allow a mask for a queer LGBTQ activist standing up for gay and trans rights against a torrent of scoundrels hunting for his legal identity. its a matter of safety... but what about a FAKE queer activist?
let me be very clear for the 100th time: i am a real person. this is not a joke. i am not playing a character. i am really autistic and bisexual. tinglers are sincere and they are not āso bad theyre goodā. they are just good. camp damascus is not āmy first serious bookā because my queer erotica is serious. my art is important and real.
when people tell me to unmask they often do not know WHY they want it, and of course one very good reason is innocent curiosity. but there are SOME cases where i start to get THAT feeling--that tingle all of us āpassingā buckaroos get when we can sense the real intent behind the poking and prodding. that is the feeling of stumbling into a gatekeepers crosshairs.
if i was to take off my pink bag, what about my face would you analyze to tell if i was REALLY queer. my eye color? my ear shape? if you learned my legal name, would you see if it sounded autistic? is my voice neurodivergent enough?
or is all of that utterly absurd? i am curious what the TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION thinks.
PART FIVE: GENDERED
this will be the shortest of parts, but it has to be said. i have a very complex relationship with gender, as written about at length here and here. i understand these things can be difficult to parse for some, but i ask that you trust me when i say that the ONLY reason i have been able to talk about my gender and sexuality and learn these things about myself is because of this pink bag. this outward appearance is a direct expression and reflection of my gender journey.
if the texas library association does not care about my appearance as an expression of my autism, then i cant imagine them giving a dang about it as an expression of my gender and queerness. that being said, it is personally very important to me and i think it should be mentioned
PART SIX: SO YOU WANT TO REMOVE AN AUTISTIC QUEER AUTHOR FROM YOUR EVENT BECAUSE PEOPLE MIGHT FIND THEIR DIFFERENCES SCARY
there is a question to be asked here: how could the TLA have done this correctly?
i have one very big piece of advice i would like to shout from the rooftops. please, for the love of sweet barbara, DO ENOUGH RESEARCH to know if this appearance will be a problem and, IF SO, dont extend an invitation in the first place. unique buckaroos with different presentations are constantly left in this place of limbo because we are bombarded with careless actions like those of the TLA. before you consider extending a branch to an artist who might need more accommodations than usual, think to yourself 'CAN WE MAKE THESE ACCOMMODATIONS?'
putting all of this on the shoulders of a single 'buckaroo with a difference' is exhausting. as the TLA has shown, we currently live on a timeline where a buckaroo like myself never really knows if an invite is SOLID without doing a deep dive history lesson on how often a group discriminates and against who.
i did not want to spend my whole family holiday worrying whether or not i should say something publicly or just lie down and shut my dang mouth. i had to consider HOW i should say it. i had to worry whether or not its worth standing up for myself in the face of the largest state library association in the country. i think buckaroos with differences are with me when i say: WE ARE SICK OF HAVING TO DO THIS WORK TO COVER FOR THE POOR BEHAVIOR OF LARGE ORGANIZATIONS WHO TREAT US BADLY
another option would just be to use kindness and common sense and happily accommodate artists with unique presentations to your conventions
PART SEVEN: LOVE IS STILL REAL
i would like to close by saying THANK YOU to my publisher nightfire and editor kelly for standing up for me. they immediately stood firm and had my back. they are the real dang deal. THANK YOU to my management and agent buds dongwon and gino for trotting along beside me. THANK YOU to the folks at the texas library association who initially invited chuck with goodness in their heart and then likely got bowled over by someone else, and maybe even got knocked to the side by a big closing gate.
i hope there are librarians in texas who are still interested in carrying BURY YOUR GAYS when it comes out (which is ironically about someone who creates a space through art to express their queerness where they cant otherwise). libraries prove love is real and what they do IS SO IMPORTANT. it was SO IMPORTANT TO ME as a young buckaroo and i cannot thank you enough. i am not sure if me writing all of this will hurt my sales in some way, but this opportunity to speak about the reality of disability awareness and queer gatekeeping is too important to stay silent. (if you have not already preordered BURY YOUR GAYS then give it a preorder to make up for some texas library losses i guess.)
which leads me to my final thank you. THANK YOU to the buckaroos reading this. yes YOU. i am in the position to stand up and speak my mind against scoundrel forces ONLY because i have the might of you buckaroos by my side. the buckaroo trot is ALL OF OUR TROT and we are ALL HERE TO PROVE LOVE. i cannot tell you how much i appreciate the way you have created a space for me to express these important parts of myself. you have seen this pink mask over my face and saying YES, I ACCEPT YOU, you have literally saved my life. for that i am so thankful.
if you are UPSET by what youve read here, then turn it into something positive. you can support autistic creators, or make a donation to the AUTISTIC SELF ADVOCACY NETWORK
and besides WHO IS REALLY MISSING OUT? this is what it looks like when you invite the worlds greatest author chuck tingle to your event and treat their identity as valid. WE HAVE A DANG GOOD TIME
KEEP TROTTING INTO THE FUTURE. KEEP KICKING DOWN GATES WHEREVER THEY MAY BE. KEEP PROVING LOVE IS REAL AND PROVING IT TOGETHER. lets go buckaroos - chuck
UPDATE AN HOUR AFTER POSTING:
true buckaroo TJ KLUNE was set to be another author on panel chuck was removed from and has informed me he has now chosen to decline his invitation in support and solidarity with chuck. i am so deeply moved by this. thank you from bottom of heart buckaroo
to be very clear TJ has a huge platform and DOES NOT NEED TO DO THIS. these conferences are great for book sales and he is taking a hit out of pure solidarity. this is queer buckaroos standing up for eachother. i am floored by this kindness and love
please consider checking out his books if they are not already covering your dang bookshelf. chuck blurbed IN THE LIVES OF PUPPETS and i was blown away i heckin loved it
Writing Accountability Post #32--and thoughts about similarities in horse show success and writing success
This has actually been a reasonably successful week, accountability-wise. I broke through the block I've had with outlining the Goddess's Vision series by giving in to the desires of two of my characters and foregrounding them for the first book, at least. Again, like The Cost of Power series, this is going to be a trilogy. However, I think Goddess's Vision is going to focus on specific characters while advancing the trilogy/series arc. So this first book will feature Heinmyets and Betsona, and how their relationship impacts the growing crisis in the lands of Daran and Varen. The second book probably will be about Witmara's mother Katerin, dealing with the threat from the Divine Confederation, with perhaps some POV from Witmara. And book three...sigh, it will probably be all four--Heinmyets, Betsona, Katerin, Witmara--as they deal with the crisis of empire and the threat of the Divine Confederation. I don't know why, but now that structure seems to make more sense than running with so many different POVs scattered around two continents. By book three, we'll have enough going on that the multiple viewpoints will go quickly. But there's enough of a foundation needing to be constructed before the third book that this structure makes sense.
Federation Cowboy is ready to launch. All that is left now is promotion.
I've also decided that I'm not going to put much effort into getting the remaining Netwalk Sequence books into paperback, at least not right away. There's not a lot of interest, and with the Goddess's Vision series becoming a reality, the Goddess's Honor series takes priority over Netwalk. I need to revise the versions in Ingram before my Alli membership runs out for the freebie uploads. Once I get Goddess's Honor done, then I can deal with what's left of Netwalk.
Actually, my biggest hurdle right now is promotion. I'm part of the Narratress sale with The Heritage of Michael Martiniere and Justine Fixes Everything and so far, it's been a bust, in spite of this being the best pricing yet on these books. They are both available for $1.99 until August 30th, at all the usual suspects. Which leads into the other part of this particular essay.
Last night, in a funk about how poorly I'm doing in a sale where people are openly bragging about buying 50+ books but none of them include mine, I had a big glass of absinthe and thought about things. Because I'm spending a bit of time these days meditating on the Marker boy and where his training might go once he's conditioned, I started thinking about big horse shows, and had this revelation--big success in writing is very much like big success in high-end horse shows. You can't do it alone. Oh, it's possible to do well at smaller open shows and local shows without a trainer presence and supervision, but success at a big regional or national show (much less the rarefied air of the international circuit) requires networking and the knowledgeable trainer or guide.
It's not about the training in horse show world. Many of us are sufficiently competent that we could train ourselves to compete with the big names when performance is the only criteria. But the high-level success depends on presentation for horse and handler/rider, and the insider knowledge of little tricks in the show pen that get passed around by word of mouth, as well as knowledge about particular subjective fads that could make a difference. The color and fit of the handler/rider's clothing, for example. Specific grooming and trimming tweaks for the horse. Placement of rider hands. Style of horse tack. Helmet or hat styling. Heads up from the trainer about what needs to be done in competition, including such things as "don't get caught up in the middle of a big group but stand out in a good way." And so on.
In writing world, the equivalent is connections with groups, mentors, workshops, writing programs, and associations. In traditional publishing, a connection with someone who is known and sells well can open a lot of doors. Introductions to editors and agents. Recommendations that ensure a manuscript gets a second look. Credentials that boost someone above others. But--there's a caveat there. Just because someone says "yes, you're almost there" doesn't mean squat unless they're willing to commit to providing references and recommendations for a work that the person thinks meets the target. Talk is cheap, and you'll hear a lot of that. Someone with clout who is willing to promote you and actually does that is something else, and relatively rare.
Oh, I know, I know. There are lots of people who will splutter and fuss at the above, citing circumstances where an amazing unsolicited manuscript manages to scale all of the publishing walls. And if you believe that, welp, I have a bridge or two for sale.
But the same thing happens in independent/self-publishing circles as well. I've been around enough to recognize that the folx who are selling well in these specific sales have a connection to specific indie publishing circles and contests. They're part of a particular in-group, and being sufficiently present to recognize the linkages makes that awareness really stand out, especially this time around. It doesn't hurt that I see the same thing happening over on Substack, where certain groups and affiliations lead to more subscriptions and greater notice. I've read enough of those journals to be aware that it's not necessarily writing quality that is winning the game, it's who you know and what they do to help you. You can be a superb writer but if you don't have the connections, you aren't going to stand out from the crowd in a positive manner (I refuse to go the edgelord route).
Which...throws me back onto the horse show analogy, because that's very true for high-level competitive success. You can have the best-bred, best-trained horse in the world, but you ain't necessarily winning at the Worlds or Congress if you don't have the dialed-in connections that help you look credible.
Yes, it's very subtle and subjective, but...isn't that true for promoting writing as well?
star wars headcanon time:
- so mon mothma (based on the ep3 deleted scenes) knew Padme pretty well. and consequently TOTALLY clocked that she was pregnant. she knew. a bunch of senators knew. they never said anything because they respected her privacy.
- however padme was good at keeping her Secret Affairs under wraps so mon mothma had no idea who the father was. she never guessed it might be anakin bcos everyone knows Jedi donāt do stuff like that.
- padme dies suddenly & mysteriously. shortly thereafter bail organa and his wife announce that theyāve adopted a baby girl.Ā
- at the time mon mothma does not think much of this BUT later as leia gets older she begins to resemble padme more and more in both looks & personality and mon mothma is like. hmmm.
- so she draws the natural conclusion.
- padme was having an affair with bail organa! and when she died in childbirth bail quietlyĀ āadoptedā the baby to avoid the scandal.
- mon mothma elects not to say anything about this because itās not really her business and also the past is the past and padme has been. dead for several years at this point and she doesnāt feel like opening that wound back up.
- instead she just, takes leia under her wing.
- anyway! later when a kid w the last name Skywalker who says his dad was a jedi shows up to join the rebellion sheās like. hm.
- she didnāt know anakin well but at the very least she knew OF him and they like, probably met
- so she figures anakin must have fathered a child while he was travelling the galaxy during the clone wars. she never really liked anakin so sheās just likeĀ āhm guess he was a deadbeat dad. canāt say Iām surprised.ā
- she is not aware however that Anakin became Darth Vader so she doesnāt really feel the need to say anything to luke about this. as far as sheās aware luke already knows the truth about his parentage. at most she might be likeĀ āhey I knew your dad a bit, he was a good jedi & a war heroā.
- so as far as mon mothma is concerned, anakin skywalkerās son and padme amidalaās daughter are both fighting for the rebellion. the fact that theyāre the same age is just kind of a coincidence. tatooine uses a different calendar from most planets so she never notices that they literally have the same birthday.
- anyway later Leia is likeĀ āso guess what! luke is my long-lost brother. isnāt that wild?ā
- and mon mothma is like
ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦.āPADME WAS BANGINGĀ ANAKIN SKYWALKER????ā
(leia: not what I expected you to take from that but. yeah I guess she was.)
Mon Mothma: Leia Iām so sorry for that outburst, it was completely inappropriate. Anakin Skywalker was a good jedi and my personal dislike for him doesnāt make him any less of a hero-
Leia: he was Darth Vader.
Mon Mothma: ā¦ā¦ā¦.
Mon Mothma: MOTHERFUCKER-
Leia: yeah Iām not too happy about it either
#star wars becomes exponentially more of a comedy the second you start thinking about how completely nuts it is for side characters

hey, anyone heard of Jews for Jesus (i.e. Christians pretending to be Jewish for evangelical purposes) going door to door asking for info about the local Jewish community?
There's apparently a couple dudes in kippot doing just that in upper lower Michigan -- where I'm originally from -- and I'm trying to figure out how concerned I should be for my old community.
J4Js suck but can be dealt with. But if these are assholes gearing up for some hate crimes I've got folks I'd like to warn.
(Please reblog, add comments if you have insight!)
(for the goyim: there is absolutely zero chance that they were actual Jews. We don't go door to door for a lot of reasons, including that it generally is not safe for us to be publicly Jewish in my country)
Yeah, that's kind of unnerving.
Oh yeah, Iāve heard of them. Theyāre pretty aggressive evangelizers and kinda gross as well.
