I think Lukas definitely communicates his affection with acts of service and gift-giving first and foremost, considering the amount of big flashy things he's tried doing for Kaj, plus all the gifts. But I agree; he seems to need validation and attention, considering he gets upset that Kaj doesn't seem to care much for his date in Chapter 2. Despite his macho persona he puts on, he seems to doubt himself quicker than others, and if Kaj didn't reinforce that the bunker was cool, Lukas probably would've continued down the "I'm so weird and that date was so weird and I should've done something normal" spiral. He seems to thrive with attention and words of affirmation for his ego. He also seems to always initiate physical touch, but I see this more of a product as his upbringing and relationship with Robin--touching is common when you're in a house with two brothers! But physical touch is a much more casual thing to Lukas than it is to Kaj, I feel.

Kaj is a bit more complicated, but I think his love languages are quality time, acts of service, and if he actually lets himself express it, physical touch. LAN parties are time-consuming, so it's interesting that Kaj chose a longer date idea than Lukas did. The acts of service comes from the pizza, the video he took for Lukas's crazy death stunt, and the quiet attention he pays to Lukas's vice for sweets. And it's my own selfish headcanon that Kaj is a little touch-starved, living his life virtually and apparently only with his mother and few other IRL friends. He seems to fear serious physical intimacy with Lukas (to be fair, Kaj seems to be a great sufferer of internal homophobia, so maybe that could explain it), but he likes to flick Lukas's ahoge or grab his hair or stick close to him in general, especially in some of the extra comic outtakes.

I think it's so funny the way Lukas was characterized in that last chapter. Him and Kaj fooling around via flirting is so them. (Lukas going overboard again with the lip bite and pulling the jersey collar down--what was even the intention there?? i'm crine.) Lukas seemed to get a really bad case of cuteness aggression for Kaj.

Just look at this boy. You can't tell me that's not one of the worst cases of cuteness aggression you've ever seen in your life.

I think it's so interesting how Kaj looked disgusted by the idea of Lukas being gay and asking him out at first, but then relenting to just play along with the shenanigans. (Clearly he overestimated Lukas's self control, because the "oh shit" facial expression when Lukas clambered over the couch to him was everything...)

Kaj genuinely wanting Lukas to stop and resisting the affection was interesting. (I think if he didn't resist then Lukas probably would've kissed him on the cheek or something.)

Also, it's a running joke in the community that it's not gay if the socks stay on, right? But Kaj has his socks on, and Lukas has them off in these last few chapters. I feel like this could be symbolic of how Lukas is slowly letting the lines blur on his end, while Kaj stays resolutely homophobic.

I knew Kaj would be an asshole with the homophobia (BURN HIM AT THE STAKE), but I wasn't expecting Lukas to be as open-minded as he was. My love for Lukas is growing as the chapters progress!

I think Lukas is actually somewhat demiromantic, seeing how he seems to value his relationship with Robin deeply and struggles to hold on to superficial romantic connections (like with his first girlfriend, who he didn't seem interested in at all). Lukas seems to try and play romantic relationships by a script he sees other people performing in fiction or social media (as seen by his initial attempts to court both Pia and Kaj), with a lack of understanding with what really goes behind that. Of course, you can chalk that up to a lack of experience, but I also interpret it as his being on the aromantic spectrum as a demiromantic person. You can see Lukas's feelings evolving for Kaj as they share conversations and more moments together (I loved the AiAiA music video for showing these details and Looping the Rooms for supporting it)--there is no love at first sight for him.

But apart from that, he seems very pan-adjacent to me--he seems like a person who cares more about personality than gender. And you can see how he admires people's personalities, such as with his relationship with Robin.

On the other hand, he seems frustrated and impatient and blunt with romance in general--he wants more time, more connection, more more more, and doesn't understand why. (Again, using the AiAiA animation as my evidence, because oh my god that thing was a masterpiece.)

Kaj is a much more interesting case because he seems to be holding a lot of internalized hate and suppressing some stuff. (he seems to always be on the precipice of a mental collapse and it's lowkey stressing me out... that's why he's my favourite ykyk.) But that boy is a homosexual. You can't convince me he's not.

An interpretation I have about Kaj is that he doesn't seem used to talking about his feelings, but develops attachments fast and unwillingly. Kind people root into him, but he hates it when they leave. He tries not to care, but you can see how Emily ignoring him bothers him deeply. And his first relationship was very one-sided--it was for RoR stuff! Ultimately, I feel like Kaj hates the feeling of being left behind, and he doesn't want to show to people that he cares while also being deeply motivated by emotional connection and closeness--so he overcompensates with feigned nonchalance to try and foster those bonds without scaring people away. (I think Lukas having a near death experience and his conflicting feelings about it was a great example of this.)

I think his first relationship was a result of trying to make that emotional intimacy and connection work, something Kaj craved for. But layered over this is the desire to maintain the status quo, be "normal", hence his homophobic views that are probably internalized into himself.
