Can folks correct me if I’m wrong but my understanding, isn’t sex physical and gender social?

In my understanding, someone born with outside bits is male and someone born with inside bits is female. Folks born with variation of the preceding are intersex.

Lads who want and do appear masculine in a social sense are men, and ladies who want and do appear feminine in a social sense are women.

I’m kinda confused about the post and don’t want to hurt anybody, can people tell me what they think?

while "sex" is physical, it's not nearly as simple as "vagina = female and penis = male", the vast majority of biologists agree that it is far more complicated than that, even without considering trans people.

I'm gonna assume you're asking in good faith, but for future reference, yes, calling a trans man female or a trans woman male is incredibly transphobic and by claiming that people born with penises are male and that people born with vaginas are female, you are in fact doing exactly that. it doesn't matter if you call them "outside/inside bits" instead. you are still being transphobic (and intersexist)

Just on the biological sex front: Lucy Cooke has a really good book called “Bitch” that does a great job deconstructing the binary of sex. The book is mostly about how female animals have historically been treated by male scientists and how humans have projected their misogyny on animals and how that’s gotten in the way of real scientific progress and understanding of animal behavior and biology.

One of the first chapters actually opens up discussing sex and how the development of it isn’t as simple as XX being female, and XY being male. While certain hormones are important for the development of one or another, the process is a lot more complex than just what hormones are there. The development pathways for male or female are closely interlinked, and even when female development pathways involve a lot more testosterone than usual (such as in female spotted hyenas, which are indistinguishable from males and even have a penis), they still wind up able to reproduce as a female successfully. If sex were really so simple that an animal can only develop one way or another, that wouldn’t be possible. Clearly the process is more complicated than that.

This is part of why saying “biological sex” is this concrete, immutable thing is just wrong. Time and time again we see examples of animals that just completely defy that. Of course the counter argument is always “well, humans aren’t hyenas”, but personally I don’t really think that’s a great argument. Firstly, because animals have been used as proxies for human biology for a long time, and secondly, because animals are used all the time to explain why things like the patriarchy or bigotry are totally acceptable. I’m not saying human sexual development is the same as spotted hyenas’, just that it’s also similarly complicated!

furthermore like. why is bio sex what you are smalltalking with trans people about? in what world do you pretend that is a demonstration of good faith and not, like, overtly deliberately inflammatory? what ever happened to people's sense of shame that they shouldn't bring up things that are considered impolite to discuss? you can't talk to us about the fucking weather? the only thing you can figure out what to say to us is about how we're actually not what we say we are? you seriously don't know how to make conversation with trans people about literally anything else and i'm supposed to buy the idea that that doesn't make you a chud? i think we need to get down to the ontological root of this argument which is that you're only bringing it up because that's the only way you think you have of relating to a trans person, the things you think you understand about them, when your supposed understanding of them almost certainly stems from transphobic source material, because we live in a transphobic ass world. and we're supposed to just accept that. i'm done pretending that it isn't fucked up that cis people can't just have normal conversations with us. when you walk up to someone and the first thing you say to them is shaped like "i disagree with this aspect of who you say you are" on what fucking planet is anyone going to respond well to that as though it is just a normal way of conversation or seeking understanding? it's not. as long as we're talking about ground we shouldn't cede, i'm in favor of holding the line at being-nice-101

I think for a lot of people “I am completely helpless and powerless” and “I am completely powerful and in control” are both basically comforting fantasies because most of us live our lives in an in between place where we have enough agency to be responsible for our actions but not enough agency to have true control over our lives and the tension between power and powerlessness in the day to day is psychologically wearing and exhausting
