Begin Again | Josh & Kate
katherine-morgan:
Joshuaâs offer was generous and she appreciated the fact that he was opening his home up to her completely but she shook her head. She could never take him up on it. âI might take over a corner in the living room so her roomâs not inundated with all of my things but thatâs all I need.â She was well aware that the living situation wasnât permanent and she had no right to take over his home with her things. It would mostly be left in storage until she found a place of her own and only then would she think about retrieving it. She was grateful, but there were boundaries and making his home feel like their home most definitely crossed that line.
Kate felt as if she was staring at Peyton, but she couldnât get enough of the girl. She wanted to drink in all of her features, all of her mannerisms. She wanted to be able to read her daughter like most other mothers could. A soft smile tugged at her lips as Peyton spoke more, leaving Kate to notice the small accent that tinged certain words. She wanted to comment on it, but tucked it into the back of her brain for another time. There was a more important matter at hand. âWell I donât see why not, unless Daddy has something heâs got to do,â she told the tiny blonde before looking down at Josh for an answer.Â
He knew what she was doing. He knew it was the right thing for her to do; but itâd take him some time to acknowledge that there was some boundaries between them. As much as he resented her for how she was and how she fell victim to her addiction, it had still been three-hundred and seventy two days since he last saw her. A year and a handful of days since he left the woman heâd committed himself to and had a daughter with. There were feelings of guilt and bitterness; feelings of joy and happiness, but most prominently there was confusion. Josh needed time to figure that out. âYouâve got four whole corners to choose from, you can have the pick of the lot,â The Irishman uttered with a hint of playfulness, his attention faltering from the German Shepherd and instead once more to the pair opposite.
âDaddyâs never got anything more important to do than read to his princess.â Joshua offered with a smile, straightening up to meet Kate and Peytonâs collective gazes with his own. Even now, their daughter beamed bright and with childish wonder, entirely oblivious to the tension that haunted the home. It was that naivety that put the Irishman at ease. âIf you two race upstairs, Iâll nip out to the car and fetch the rest of Mummyâs things for her,â Josh said it as if it was an offer, but his insistence was an undertone for Kate and Peyton to spend some time together. âHowâs that sound?â
Begin Again | Josh & Kate
katherine-morgan:
Hearing about the little quirks of their daughter caused Kateâs smile to absentmindedly play on her perfectly pink lips. It was a bittersweet smile - one saddened by all she had missed yet excited to be part of the little girlâs future. While she was in rehab all Kate thought about were the quintessential mother-daughter moments she had missed, which was enough for her to just say fuck it and continue living life out of control, but she didnât. It only made her long for the moments Peyton had yet to live and that thought alone was what helped push her through the hardest parts of getting clean.
And it was moments like this, with her baby in her arms, that made the year away worth it. The moment where she and Josh seemingly fell back to their old selves, even if for a brief moment. âHe was. As lousy as they come,â she teased right back. He makes cute babies too, she was about to say but opted to keep her mouth shut instead. His next comment made her thankful that she had held back, the smile that once graced her features slowly disappearing. âItâs not the most glamorous abode but I had no choice,â she reminded him. There was a slight sadness to her voice. Part of it was because of the lavish lifestyle she once lived but it was mostly due to the reminder of the fact that she was all alone. When she was allowed to leave the rehabilitation center there had been no one to pick her up, no one to congratulate her or celebrate with her. She had gathered her few belongings, piled them into the car they so kindly housed for her while she was an inpatient and drove straight for home - well, what was home - before coming for her baby. The silver lining to it all was his offer to house her while she got back on her feet and while the generosity wasnât expected from him, she truly appreciated it.
âYeah, itâs no trouble at all. I have a year of snuggles I need to get in.â Her eyes looked from Peyton to Josh as a soft smile returned to her lips. âThank you.â Kate wasnât sure she was ready for the moment to turn heavy again so she was thankful when Hollyâs barks interrupted him. âHi, my love,â she cooed down to the little blonde who was now awake, but just barely. âI think itâs time for someone to go to bed. Letâs go up and get ready, shall we P? You can show me your room and all of your toys, and Mamaâs going to stay in your room tonight. How does that sound?â
There were so many things he wanted to say, so many things he needed to say, so many things he couldnât say. Apologies and hushed words that shouldâve been uttered in person long ago, truths and explanations he owed, but none of that really mattered anymore, not when Peyton first saw her mother and lit up brighter than the sun. To bring up their wounds werenât going to do them any good, of that Josh was certain. His blue hues watched the two women in his life with an overwhelming joy which muted out his words, to see them reunited and getting along so well washed away any doubt he ever had about Kateâs return. Was she really clean? Would Peyton recognise her own mother?
He felt that sadness that she uttered, but there was precious little he could do beyond share in it. Josh could never have afforded to keep Kateâs home while she was gone, not on his salary. He never couldâve asked his parents for help, they had been absent since long before Katherine came into the picture. Josh supposed she was lucky in that sense; she never had the displeasure of dealing with his family. âWeâll make do,â The Irishman offered just like old times; they were always a team. This was no different, except in the many ways it was. âIâve no quarrels with you adding your own personal touches to the place, either. It should feel like home.â Josh was affirmative with his tone, knowing that if he were in her shoes heâd deny it tilâ kingdom come. It wasnât her home, after all. She had no choice in the decor to start with, no choice in the neighbourhood, no choice in any of it. Not until now, anyway.
Hollyâs whining washed away anything else he had to offer on the matter, and the Irishman wandered to the other side of the kitchen to fetch Hollyâs food as Kate had her moment with Peyton who seemed nothing but excited to be sharing her room with her mum. The little girl gave her a nod, set a bright smile to her tired expression and nuzzled against her mother, her arms slinked around and locked behind Kateâs neck. âDaddy can read to us,â Peyton said, as if Josh had no say in the matter. The Irishman nodded along as he knelt down to feed Holly, his attention shifting from the dog and up to Kate and their child. âIf mummyâs alright with that, of course. Or maybe she can read to you tonightââ The little girl protested with a huff, and just like that, she lit up with an even brighter smile. She had an idea that left Joshua with muted contemplation; it was up to Kate.âMummy and Daddy can read to me.â
Begin Again | Josh & Kate
katherine-morgan:
Kateâs blue hues looked down to their sleeping angel as Josh went on about her. It was hard to believe that the sweet girl nuzzled in her arms could be a handful but perhaps she was more like her mother than Kate realized. âWhat else does she do? What does she like? Food, color, activity. I want to know it all.â Being away from Peyton for so long had Kate questioning everything until the moment they were reunited. The fear that she held inside was now gone and though things were still new and vastly different, the ease at which Peyton went to her made Kate that much more sure she had done the right thing even though it had meant missing a year of her daughterâs life. It was a year she hoped Peyton would never remember clearly but it was necessary if she wanted to see the rest of Peytonâs life.
âWhat? You donât think I can do it?â Kate challenged, raising a neatly manicured brow in his direction. Her words were pure jest but she found the âold Kateâ coming through in the sense that she never liked being told what to do nor did she back down from a challenge. if any piece of her old self were to stay, she wanted this to be it. âI did have a terrible teacher. Couldnât understand him - his accent was too thick and he kept using funny words.â If her joking manner hadnât been apparent before, it was now and it was accompanied by one of her signature smiles. âNo, really. Let me see the books to decipher how much shit youâre in and weâll go from there. I might have a few favors left to call in if you really need them.â She still had connections in Manhattan and while some of them were of those better left in her past, she was willing to take the risk if it meant digging them out of a massive hole.
Kateâs teeth tugged at her lower lip as she watched him pause, feeling slightly bad for coming off so stern. Their situation wasnât easy and Kate didnât know where they stood. Their visit had been amicable so far but they had barely grazed the surface of anything. There had been a lot left unsaid when they parted ways and a lot to talk about now but Kate wouldnât be the one to delve into it. While she was locked up in a glorified prison cell for the last year, Joshua was out living his life. Was she bitter? Maybe a little bit at first but not anymore. He had cleaned himself up, done what she wasnât able to do on her own. How could she be angry at him for that? However that was just it - he had been living his life. Without her. His infrequent chats never led to anything beyond talks about Peyton so she had no idea what his life was like. Had it been hard for him too or did he move on just fine without her? They were all questions she was curious about but would never raise for the sake of ruining their cordial reunion.
It couldâve been easy for her to ignore the small bump but she chose not to. âSorry. I just - not right now. Please?â she offered in nearly a whisper as if her volume would wake Peyton. Before he could offer anything more, Kate shook her head and sat up a little in her seat just enough to cause Peyton to stir in her sleep. A gentle smile took over her features as she looked down at the girl who did nothing more that shift positions and Kate settled back into the seat. âYou donât have to do that. Itâs not much and Iâve sort of been living in there for the last two days so itâs a mess. Iâll grab everything I need later.â
Prim and proper, the Manhattan elite. But most importantly; mother. It suited her and that was the simple truth of it. It was all Joshua saw when he caught himself staring at Katherine and their daughter across the kitchen island. Two sets of blonde tresses, one whose braids could without a doubt be done better, but it wasnât for lack of trying. Two sets of striking blue eyes, one whose were just drifting to and through between her slumber. There was no shadow of a doubt that Peyton was the spitting image of her mother, and to see them reunited only stirred feelings of the past. Conflicted or otherwise. âSome days itâs blue, others itâs pink, or purple,â Josh said with a grin. It was hard to keep a three year oldâs mind settled on anything. âNo doubt sheâll tell you all about it when she wakes up. She could talk your ears off.â Joshua let out faint laughter and shook his head as sheâd challenged him, true to his memories of a fiery woman whoâd teased and played, but was unbending and stubborn. To say no to Kate had always only spurred her on more, dared her to do the denied. âSounds like a lousy teacher if you ask me. I bet he was as handsome as they come though.â Josh uttered playfully, nodding along. âIâd love for you to clean up after my terrible book work.â
The sting of that donât still lingered, yet his eyes remained a contender for hers as he slipped around the island, closing closer to the woman all too familiar and yet - so different. A thousand times he ran this scenario over in his mind, and a thousand times it was different, but it was never this. It was rarely calm, and never was it this peaceful. There was fire in some, passion in others. Anger was in most, but thisâthis was unexpected. There was no ferocity over the bar, nor the neighborhood. She barely had a chance to see either, but that was another matter entirely. No toxicity, no cruel words and no spite. Just Katherine and her daughter. Maybe itâd come later, Josh thought as his attention drifted finally from the pair of blondes and instead to the hallway of what was their home. Not his anymore. Theirs. There was so much to consider, so much to talk about, but for now, he was happy to accept the peace.
âI have a hard time picturing you living out of your car.â The Irishman mused, half a smile cocked to his lips. There was no intentional hostility in his voice, but he knew it was going to be a touchy subject. Her family wasnât exactly receptive of either of them. âThereâs no walk in closets, and no pretty views of the Manhattan skyline. The hot water is temperamental at the best of times, but itâs home.â Josh sighed, a shallow breath parted from his lips and a calloused hand pulled through the mess of light brown atop his scalp as he looked once more back to Kate. âYou donât mind doubling up with her, do you? Sheâs no trouble when she sleeps, sheâs just an early riser.â His words served as a caution more so than a question; given that many a early morning after a late night at work was ruined by an eager blonde bouncing on the bottom of his bed.
His fingers stroked through Peytonâs blonde locks as she slumbered, all too content with the fussing and the familiarity of a mother gone for what was effectively one third of her life. âThere wasnât a day that went by where she didnât ask how mummy was doing,â Joshua spoke with a soft tongue, his words quiet and soft as if to not disturb the toddler. âSheâd always sleep a little easier after hearing your voice on the phone.â Pale-blue hues set upon Katherine now he was closer. He studied her; watched her with curious intent. âIâve no doubt it was more or less the same for you, and I shouldââ The Irishman was interrupted by Hollyâs barking, her studying and intent watching more focused on her bowl. Peyton stirred with the barking, woken from her short nap pressed in her motherâs arms. Hazily, she lifted her heavy eyelids and looked up to Katherine, a smile brighter than a thousand suns pressed to her lips.

Maybe this won't last very long; But you feel so right; And I could be wrong.
aspen-acosta:
âSt Patrickâs Day. The renowned day for drinking beer, wearing green (which Aspen just so happened to look great in), and getting just wasted without anyone being able to really judge you. This year was no different. She set out for drinking earlier than any adult really should, reaching a level of intoxication before the sun even set that wasâŚ.well, not healthy. As all good - and bad - nights of Aspenâs, she eventually ended up The Bearâs Den, later in the night. She had been there for a while, pouring more beer down her throat somehow while still staying standing, before she finally spotted Josh. It was packed, there was no wonder she hadnât seen him before now. She tried to get his attention from across the bar, but no such luck. Time for plan b.
Apsen separated herself from the crowd of people she was with, bounding over to the bar where Josh was serving people and pushing between people to get right up front, a huge grin on her face. âIf it isnât my favorite bartender in the whole wide world,â she said, spilling part of her beer as she leaned into to the bar, pushing up onto her tip toes to get better leverage. âWhoops,â she murmured, glancing down and frowning slightly, scrunching her nose up as she looked back at him. âWhere have you been my entire life? Mostly tonight. Today? What time is it now?â Aspen broke off her words, a smile spreading even wider across her face. âHi. Howâs your day going?â she asked after a beat.
The dreaded day. Not because it was a wonderful Irish celebration, and not because it wasnât a good reason to celebrate, but because the Den was perhaps the only bar in Lanford owned by an Irishman. Not only that, but it was the only one with an Irish, comfortable, homely feel to it. To Joshua, it was Armageddon, D-Day and just about any other apocalypse that could be thought of off the top of his head. Everyone and their uncle claimed to be of Irish descent, they all tried their attempts at an Irish accent, and the leprechaun jokes were getting a little old. So many faces had came and gone, and though he caught a glimpse of Aspen out the corner of his eye, she was lost amongst the crowds once more.
It wasnât until sheâd all but forced herself to the front that Joshâs eyes locked onto hers, and herâeverything else, as sheâd gained her footing on the opposite side of the bar. âIâm half disappointed, Angel.â Joshua called out over the noise. âI figured youâd be here the moment the doors opened.â The Irishman teased, but he wasnât kidding when he spared a glance down the bar to a group who were too far gone, and had been there since before even heâd came to unlock the doors. âMy day is a literal hell, Aspen. There is no day worse for an Irish barkeep than Paddyâs day. I see youâve been having a much better one than me over there.â
jasongrey:
âOf course no. Also saving some and turning some into smoothiesâ he answered as he looked at Josh, âi still need to pick three more fruitsâ
âFair enough then. Got a date night coming up or something?â Joshua questioned, his attention drifting to the market lethargically. âYou know, some places in the world do ten or twenty a day. Not the regular old five. Bloody mad.â

âI donât want to be here, Josh, I want to be anywhere but here.â Indi fought back, she wasnât going to lie, though she still half-lied. She didnât want to be there but she also didnât not want to be there. She sighed, her frustration growing more and more. âI told you, Libby wanted me here so here I am.â
âThatâs a facade, itâs going to get ruined eventually, and then weâre right back where we started.â She stated, avoiding looking up at him, he was all too distracting and she knew sheâd give up her pride. âWhat is normal, anyway? What even are we? Because this is too much hassle for a fuck buddy.â Indi muttered, needing some clarification on their relationship, even though was certain it was done for regardless.Â
âAnd yet, here you are.â Joshua was having none of it. He shook his head and watched the woman opposite with disbelief. Her proclamations that it was all for Libby didnât help, and the Irishman settled a frown to his lips. They were in public, it wasnât the place for a heated argument. It wasnât the place to get riled up. âIf Libby is the only reason youâre here, then I have to wonder if it was even worth turning up at all.â
Her constant rebuttal and questions left Joshua just as stumped as her. He didnât have the answers, and he certainly didnât know how to make it all better. âYouâre so certain weâre set up for doom. Itâs like you just want it to happen.â He exhausted a sigh and lifted both hands to brush through his hair. âI donât know what we are, Indi. I thought we were exclusive, and then you tell Libby itâs alright to date two guys. I thought it was something meaningful, but Iâm not sure you and I are on the same wavelength.â
Juliet, the dice were loaded from the start; And I bet, and you exploded in my heart.
jasongrey:
âDonât you think this will be great in a fruit salad or a snack before dinner?â he said to the person next to him.Â
ââIâm assuming you donât mean in one sitting.â Joshua stated with a lofted brow, eyes for the cantaloupe. âIâd stick to the usual suspects, myself.â
theoglass:
ââI wonât say I donât mean to be rude, but you cut in front of me and unless youâre buying my drink, I suggest you let me go before you.â
Joshua spared a glance over his shoulder to Theo with an ounce of patience, his attention snapped from one of his staff. ââI wonât say I donât mean to be rude, but this is my bar and unless youâre paying my staff, I suggest you let me talk to my staff before you.â

âWho doesnât want to love you back?â She asked, curiously. Not that she really knew anyone anymore. She didnât keep tabs on people, it was hard enough to keep tabs on herself. âI hate that. The second part. It doesnât exist. Curiosity just kills the cat. Nothing brings it back.â The redhead corrected, only so it wouldnât have driven her crazy. âLike what. What kind of hidden talent? Iâd rather see your hidden talents.âÂ
âAll the women in my life, bar one little blonde angel.â Joshua mused and dressed a smile to his lips. He only needed her, anyway. âYou say that, but people always get curious, even after the catâs been killed. Something has to bring the cat back, right?â The Irishman offered in rebuttal with a lofted brow and a short, warm laughter. âMy hidden talents are best kept hidden. Unless you count a mighty fine talent for, wellââ Joshua gestured around him as if itâd answered the statement for him.

âHowâd you know Iâm from Belfast?â she quirked a challenging brow, if only because it wasnât often someone guessed it right. âFine, but Iâll have you know Iâm actually far worse. Did some schooling in Dublin, uni in London. I just so happened to pick up the worst parts of all threeâŚâ Her brows then waggled in a very unladylike fashion - perhaps the first truly telling sign that sheâd already had a few. âNo rock. Just the way everyone talks about North End, I sort of figured there was some sort of Big Bad Wolf down in these parts. Figured Iâd finally come pay him a visitâŚâÂ
âI spent a little too much time chasing Belfast girls around back when I was a kid. Iâll never not be able to pick that accent out.â Joshua cracked a grin and shook his head in disbelief. âBelfast, Dublin and London,â The Irishman echoed. âAnd to think youâve stumbled into my own little part of Derry, far away from home.â He topped up the glass of choice and settled it in front of Grace, amusement tinging on his features as heâd watched her. âWell Iâm flattered you came to see little old me down here. Glad to hear my barâs actually starting to make a name for itself.â
