Before this latest LLM boom we had chatbot assistants that responded to keywords in whatever you said with preprogrammed answers, or searched their company FAQs with your query and linked you to relevant answers, as was appropriate to the bot. They absolutely could and did upsell you stuff.

We all hated them because they were so much shittier than the humans they replaced. Never thought I'd see the day when I missed the competence and reliability of the old robots.
