No one ever said it was easy to be a genius, but do some of these ‘geniuses’ hear the shit that comes out of their mouths?

Hey Richard Edelman, You're Not the Only One Re-framing & Expanding
Yesterday on his blog 6 A.M., Richard Edelman responded with dissent to Fleishmann-Hillard's (FH) announcement that they are transforming from a PR firm to a full-service marketing communications provider.
In doing so, he outlined his plans for Edelman, his namesake PR firm, to expand the definition of public relations rather pursue an approach similar to FH. But he does this at the expense of the advertising profession and I cannot let this lie without rebuttal.
I disagree with Richard's contrast of advertising ideas and PR ideas. How can he credibly state that only PR ideas stimulate discussion and have the potential to play out over years? And that PR ideas start with relevancy and newsworthiness, but not ideas from an ad agency? This is patently false. Richard is selling here. Selling Edelman, a PR agency adept and celebrated for its social media prowess, and I applaud him for it. As he states, he is expanding the definition of PR and re-framing the case for his business. But making a sweeping statement that PR people are the only professionals in our industry who possess a mindset to listen to consumers, the capability to develop engaging, quality and evolving content, the ability to act in credible and rapid manner, and best to leverage social media platforms is simply wrong and damages the broader marketing communication industry overall. The reality is there is no difference between Fleishman-Hillard (FH) stating they are becoming a full-service provider, or Richard stating that Edelman is expanding the definition of PR, or an ad agency developing a social media-centric approach with 24/7 content creation. What it comes down to is who delivers results for their clients within our new communication landscape. And that may be a PR firm, an ad agency or even non-traditional provider like a publisher.
According to a recently released study what you Like on Facebook is an indication of your personality, right down to sexuality, political leanings and intelligence. Too few brands have yet to understand this connection.
Number one key takeaway from this article is that ultimately people share to build “Brand Me”.
Why the Supreme Court should be on Facebook
Our Supreme Court seems wary of a broad gay marriage ruling with some justices indicating that it may be premature for them to intervene in a fast-moving, unsettled political environment. "Even Justice Sonia Sotomayor, whose questioning indicated that she was skeptical of the reasons proffered for why gay couples should not be allowed to marry, seemed to think that it might not be time for the court to make a bold decision." (Washington Post) Really? Maybe our Supreme Court Justices should consult Facebook in addition to case law.
I joined Facebook on October 5, 2006. And since that time I have connected with 711 friends. Seven hundred eleven. They are from both sides of the political party aisle. They fall across many points on the political spectrum. They have many different religious beliefs. And do you know what I viewed from them today in my Newsfeed? Red and pink. Red and pink. Post after post, profile pic after profile pic of red and pink.
If Justice Sotomayor and a majority of her esteemed jurists choose to rule to overturn California's Proposition 8, their decision wouldn't be bold - it would simply be right. They only need to go to their Facebook pages and check their Newsfeeds. Their feeds will be adorned with red and pink objects. The social platform is draped in red and pink.
Martin Luther King Jr. used his gift of moving oratory to spur mass demonstrations of nonviolent resistance. The Court took notice then and should equally take notice now. While the gay marriage movement is absent a King and the large marches on the Mall, the groundswell of social media has replaced them. The power of the visual, the red and pink symbol, is our "I had a dream" speech. Our nonviolent resistance, our own march, is not physical, but rather virtual - a wave of red and pink across social platforms. King stood on the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial. We stand united on the pages of Facebook.
Thank you Mikal Reich, creative director at Dead As We Know It, and the Kraken Black Spiced Rum brand team for reminding me why I love outdoor advertising and the possibilities the medium provides our industry.
