Brace yourselves, everybody: The fascists of 4chan are planning an anti-LGBT social media blitz starting June 1 for Pride Month
Expect to see a lot of alt-right bots and sockpuppets doing everything possible to increase tension, division, and bad feelings in the LGBTQ+ community.
Basic guidelines:
Focus on your own goals and experiences for Pride Month—instead of just responding to the latest outrage, focus on connecting to people you care about, doing things you enjoy, promoting good causes, sharing media you like, or fundraising for organizations doing good work.
If you see someone promoting hateful or divisive opinions, don’t engage with them and boost their metrics—block and report them
Remember that a lot of troll operations aim to make us feel hopeless and divided. Trolls take our community’s existing vulnerabilities and divisions, and weaponize them. These trolls will be leaning hard on filling social media with new stories about homophobic and transphobic violence and suicide statistics, so we’re upset, in a defensive mentality, and feeling isolated and alone. We have to work together to promote solidarity and positivity.
Double-check news stories before spreading them. Be extra suspicious before you signalboost something. Screencaps can be fabricated; so can videos and images. Google for other sources, check reputable news sites, or look it up on Snopes
Don’t assume people are who they say they are. Trolls will especially assume identities they can use to promote division. They’ll pose as LGBT people so they can inflame infighting or attack LGBT people with fewer consequences, or to frame different groups for misdeeds.
Take care of yourself and don’t let them get you down. Pride 2020 has a huge damper because we can’t do a lot of the things that help us renew and recharge. Being in quarantine means we miss out on festivals, dancing, parades, performances, workshops, and important community-building events. We were already going to have to work to make it a decent Pride at a distance. 4chan wants to make things even worse, so that so we end up feeling paranoid, hypervigilant, abandoned, and at each other’s throats. Do your best to promote your own mental health and everybody else’s, and unplug from social media when you need to.
The age old tip of dealing with trolls:
1. DON’T INTERACT WITH THEM
2. IGNORE THEM
3. BLOCK THEM
Continue your day online and avoid them as much as possible. Nothing frustrates a troll more than not responding. :)
And if you get dogpiled, log off. Turn off notifications. Call some friends. :) Avoid the internet until it has blown over.
They’ve specifically mentioned mass targeting dating apps (Tinder, Grindr, Bumble) to create fake profiles with inflammatory content. I also worry about people being catfished or lured to unsafe locations, so maybe avoid those apps for the next few weeks until we can assess the damage. If you’ve been regularly talking to someone on a dating app, try transitioning to a safer messaging app—something like Signal which isn’t connected to your name/location/phone number.
Some apps won’t let you use them without location services on, but if it’s possible for you, turn off your location services on your phone and stick to well-known and familiar places. Don’t post publicly on social media about your location or anywhere you’re planning to be. If you’re planning to meet up for an informal Pride celebration, try to invite only a few close friends and people who have been vetted (this will help cut down on COVID transmission risks as well)
Hate campaign organizers are trying to ‘sink’ companies which are Pride-friendly by boycotting them. If this matters to you, you can choose to buy only from explicitly Pride-friendly companies for the duration. If you have a little money set aside this month, consider buying directly from LGBTQ+ creators and supporting emergency GoFundMes or local queer charities.
This site in particular is notoriously easy to create sockpuppets on. If you’re following any major LGBT tags you may want to drop the habit until July. Block liberally. Screen potentially inflammatory content before sharing it. Resurrect posts from previous Prides. Stick with blogs/creators you already know, and support each other.

"Christopher? Did you hear me?" Ty sat opposite him, still scribbling in his notebook as he interviewed him about the demon sighting. He glanced up at him for a second; Kit caught a flash of gray before he looked away again.
"Sorry, what?" Kit pocketed his cellphone, fidgeting nervously.
"You said you'd show me a photograph of the demon?"
"Oh, right. Yes! I did!" Kit wasn't sure why he was shouting- he was very overwhelmed, okay? After all, it wasn't every day that the boy you thought you'd never see again turns up on your doorstep, acting like nothing ever happened.
Maybe he was being a little unfair- Ty was just being friendly, and it wasn't really his fault that he'd been assigned to Kit's case.
"Can you show me it?"
"Oh. Right. Yes!" Kit fumbled with his phone, this time turning the screen away from Ty. No need for him to embarrass himself again by letting him see the lock screen.
He tilted the phone to Ty once he found the picture. Kit tried to avoid looking at him, instead staring out of the window as though it held the secrets of the universe.
Ty began to write in his notebook again, a lock of black hair falling into his eyes. Kit sat on his hands to conceal the way they twitched.
"I thought I'd never see you again," Ty said suddenly, as though on impulse. Kit gaped at him, his heart rate picking up in shock. Ty avoided eye contact, one hand coming away from the pad to twirl the cord of his headphones around his long fingers. "When you left, I mean." At Kit's silence, he hastened to add. "I don't blame you. At all. You didn't like me- you had a right to want to get away from me."
"You thought I didn't like you?"
"Am I wrong?" Ty didn't sound sarcastic or scathing- he sounded genuinely curious.
"Yes! What, you think I was lying?"
"I don't understand; lying about what?"
"I wasn't lying when I said I loved you, Ty!" Kit shouted; Ty flinched at the sound. Kit immediately felt guilty. "I'm sorry, didn't mean to shout. But... I meant what I said."
"You think that I thought that you were lying?" Say that three times too fast, Kit thought dryly. Ty set his notebook down. "I thought you already knew."
"Knew what?"
"Knew that I loved you too." Kit's heart skipped a beat- for a moment, he thought he was having a heart attack. Unfortunately, the world was not so kind.
"Then, why didn't you say it back? If you loved me, I mean." Kit fumbled over his words, his hands shaking with emotion.
"Because I thought you already knew," Ty repeated. "And because I don't understand why people say 'I love you' so much, as though it explains anything."
Kit didn't know what to say to that. "You loved me?"
"Love." Ty murmured, his eyes flicking around the room.
"What?"
"I love you. Not 'loved'. I never stopped."
"You love me?" Kit was aware he was beginning to sound like a parrot.
"Yes." Ty smiled slightly. "Of course I do."
"I think I'm going to black out for a second," Kit said, in what he considered a remarkably calm tone. "Please pretend nothing is happening."
She tells him staying with her would mean giving up his identity, his city, his whole life. He says,You’re supposed to be smart, but you don’t get it. You are my life. You are my identity. I will not give you up. As for everything else? He shrugs. Who needs it?
Hey everyone apparently a 4chan group is planning a cyberattack against the LGBTQ+ community starting on June 1st with everything from spreading anti-queer propaganda, to harassing people, to doxxing. I haven’t heard of it until now and no mention on Tumblr, so I wanted to put this warning out there. Please be safe and please be strong. This is absolutely horrifying, and I understand many of us are minors who cannot handle this. I wish I knew what to do, but I don’t; so I ask for the union of us all. The queer community means a lot to me, so I do not want any of us to undergo this attack. This is a very serious issue :(
