i hate applying for jobs because the employers are always like: do you enjoy working in a stressful environment???? do you strive for unobtainable standards of perfection???? are you good at dealing with people that make you feel extremely uncomfortable??? do you mind losing real hours of your life in order to make minimum wage?? are you a fan of capitalism??? do you love selling your soul just so you can afford to live???

You know, I’m a person who does have some of these “good” traits due to a perfect storm of anxiety, ADHD hyperfixation, military parents with standards of perfection, etc.

Employers and teachers all showered me with positive reinforcement, so I was convinced this yearning for unobtainable perfection was one of my best qualities even when it caused me harm.

Only recently did my wife with a degree in psychology help me realize this is unhealthy behavior that has just been rewarded and enabled by capitalism. I often have to use a grounding phase of “I dont have to be perfect for X person to love me.”

Society told me “you’re doing so great” enough times that I believed them. Don’t let capitalism trick you into thinking this is anything other than unhealthy.
