“The fact that I will commit unspeakable genocide and lead a holy war across the galaxy is very bad,” said young Paul Atreides. “For me.”

“I too feel morally conflicted by my role in a ruthless eugenics program,” admitted his mother, the Lady Jessica. “Does that make me a bad mother? Who can say….”

At that moment the Duke Leto Atreides returned home from a grueling day churning out propaganda to convince his troops that he was worth dying for. His regal face was lined with deep moral complexities. “It’s tough when you’re me and everybody wants to fuck you so so bad,” he said. “But that’s the price I must pay for the future well-being of my ancestral house.” He sighed, deep and melancholy. When was the last time he’d thrown around the old pigskin with his boy? Would he ever get the chance again…?

Paul looked around the room and was struck by the sudden and horrific realization that he was the smartest person to ever live, and that even his own loving mother and father could never hope to understand Time Cube.

But that’s a problem for another day, Paul decided, not for the last time.

“It’s a beautiful day to be grossnasty, don’t you think?” said the Baron Harkonnen homosexually as he surveyed the ravaged landscape beyond the window. Acid rain pelted against the glass and melted the flesh off the shrieking peasants below.

“Sure. Whatever,” said Feyd-Rautha, not looking up from his sketchbook, upon which he had scrawled the words ‘I love killing and maiming’ in large bubble letters.

“A-h-h,” said the Baron. “That was a trick question: every day is a beautiful day for being grossnasty. You must learn this lesson well, nephew, if you ever hope to get anywhere in life. Piter, what are you doing over there with that huge and evil brain of yours?”

The mentat violated the Hays Code six times in the few seconds it took him to reply. “I’m calculating a mathematically perfect slur for orphans,” he said in a gay voice. “Just as you requested.”

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.

Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.

All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.

After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.

It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.

And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.

The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.

ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.

You can also send donations directly to Whitesand First Nation via e-transfer ([email protected]) and they request that you add your full name in the e-transfer comment section to receive a tax receipt.

Buildings and traffic lights are melting, I can only imagine what the power grids must look like in some cities considering the hoards of people hooking up AC units to their home, and most importantly, people are dying.

These two posts sum it up perfectly. The problem is not the heat in measured degrees, Fahrenheit or Celsius. The problem is that it is that hot in areas where neither fauna, flora or architecture are made for that type of heat, because it shouldn’t be that hot in that area.

Yes, I’ve included fauna and flora. Because yes, it affects the vegetation and our wild animals as well, and yes, they’re suffering and dying as well. They just can’t talk about it on Tumblr.

Frankly, the number of posts I’ve seen where the motivation seems to be sheer pettiness, usually along the lines of “people can’t take a little heat, haha” or “why don’t Europeans just build AC, so stupid” is silly. If you want to get back at Europeans for some real or perceived slight in the past, make it about something that isn’t a global problem for all of humanity, and, might I remind users on the website where many pride themselves on standing up for minorities and oppressed populations, disproportionally affects people in areas that are traditionally struggling with poverty:

Very few people with common sense are not aware that it’s much hotter in other places on the planet than it is in Europe at present. I’m actually not talking about the US, thank you. Try the African continent, India or any place located around the equator for that – and guess what: these areas are also being affected by increased frequency in heat waves. They’re also struggling. Except there’s probably a much smaller percentage of them on Tumblr, where the people gleefully making fun of Europeans are hanging out. Just because you don’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening.

Until very recently, Europeans have not needed AC. Because the temperatures, yes, even in Spain and Greece, were rarely so high for so long that it would have made sense to plan for it. Since the industrialisation, Europe’s infrastructure has been designed to deal and handle with the range of temperatures that are normal for Europe. This includes housing, transportation, agriculture and power supplies. AC would be, as US citizens would say, “putting a bandaid on a broken bone”. It addresses the problem on a temporary basis and does not do anything to solve the problems Europe is now facing.

And that, I would like to believe, is also common sense, that if you live in a place where heat isn’t an issue, you do not design your infrastructure and houses around heat. You design them to deal with the climate that is normal for that area.
