We could’ve stopped it,

I should have left,

or rather, never been there

in the first place.

justified

Instead I called it

sacred

and something like

meant to be.

As if it made it somehow

okay

or even right.

Soon enough I realized

that love

doesn’t grow on

the toxic land that

our hearts had become.

In the end,

it was exhaustion that got us.

Strained souls,

trying to convince ourselves

that the trust would eventually

just ... appear.

Like we didn’t shatter it

to begin with.

Failing to

convince ourselves that

recklessness was simply passion

and guilt,

the price that all lovers paid.

We thought we’d get away with it.

Lies, we whispered in the dark:

It was different.

It was inevitable.

It was love.

But love,

would’ve never made her cry.

Because love,

real love,

creates kindness

not cruelty.

Remember that night

in June? When I was

leaning against the

church wall and you

wondered, if it was

alright to kiss me?
