I’ve heard a theory that the reason Christine rips off his mask is actually revenge. Because he had caused her so much pain he already tainted a sweet memory she had of her father by using a story he’d tell her as a way to manipulate her and now he’s tainted the memory of raoul proposing by trying to take power over her by using her lovers words. So it was In her anger she wanted payback and ripped his mask off in front of everyone idk how I feel about that but it’s interesting imo
It’s definitely an interesting theory, and one I kind of thought of myself while writing that post, though I didn’t mention it since I wanted to just talk about that scene in a general sense.
I’m kind of in two minds about it, because on the one hand, Christine’s compassion is one of the biggest parts of her character, and angrily ripping the Phantom’s mask off in revenge is not particularly compassionate of her. It can also be a bit difficult to play off in the final scene, where the Phantom is on a downward spiral of doing even meaner things to her, yet Christine somehow finds it in her to give some touch of human understanding. (What, no vengeance there? No Christine grabbing the Punjab lasso herself?) Not saying it’s impossible or even improbable, just that it might take some subtle, complex acting to transition between those two points.
But on the other hand, while it may not be nice of Christine, let’s face it, the Phantom has not been very nice to her. Christine is not a saint; she is human, she is not a flawless figure full of boundless forgiveness, and she does have a right to be angry there. And I have to admit, I kind of dig the idea of a Christine who’s a little more... maybe not vengeful, but just manipulative, perhaps (incidentally, one of the only saving graces IMO of the restaged tour’s ‘Point of No Return’, in that we see Christine actively moving the Phantom into a position where he can be arrested). It’s also a bit of a throwback to Leroux, where Christine is like that - not in a sense that some make her out to be, e.g. “Christine is a gold-digging bitch who strings along two men for her own gain”, but in the sense that she will say or do quite a bit to placate the Phantom, protect others, and gain her own freedom:
“You now know the tragedy. It went on for a fortnight--a fortnight during which I lied to him. My lies were as hideous as the monster who inspired them; but they were the price of my liberty.”
“Then know that each of my visits to Erik increased my horror of him; for each of those visits, instead of calming him, as I hoped, made him mad with love!”
And occasionally I see Christines who definitely verge closer to being angry or vengeful or manipulative. You have to wonder if something like that is going through Marni Raab’s head when she leans in as if to kiss the Phantom, only to rip his mask off:
And Meghan Picerno may well be the embodiment of “if looks could kill”:
