I was in the army from 2013-2021 and I gotta say that it was personally worth it from me. It helped me get out of religious cult and gave me an opportunity to learn more and give me life skills I was not taught. I agree that people should not join the military unless they specifically want to live in a controlled structured environment. However I highly suggest people looking into the reserve branches. For the army specifically they usually will give you a sign on bonus for joining the reserve. (Usually depends on if their is an mos that is in high demand) you only have to drill 2 days out of 10 months and 2 weeks out of the other two months. You usually will be in an mos that is like transportation or paperwork etc. they will assist with paying for college like active duty but you have the opportunity to go out and get a civilian job and things like that. In the end it’s basically 270 days of serving over a period of 8 years. So not even really a year of serving and you still get all the benefits you would if you were active. Like you talked about how for some it may feel like there only option and they are dead set on choosing it joining the reserves is the most viable option .

I was ANG. I was Civil Engineering, 3E052. A generator mechanic. My unit was organized around delivering emergency electrical power during disasters. You know what I did as a POG National Guardsman in a unit organized around emergency response? I got deployed to a major logistics hub in Kuwait, a logistics hub where weapons and war criminals passed through on their way to kill civilians. Drones operated out of that base. Armed drones that may have been flying over Iraq. They took off loaded and landed empty.

As a generator mechanic in the Air National Guard in a unit dedicated to disaster response, I helped the government kill people.

If i have PTSD from my adult life, it's from my time as a firefighter. I never got badly hurt in the military. But I'd go back to the fire station and become a volunteer again a thousand times before I'd talk to the recruiter again.

This isn't just about you and what you went through. This isn't about me and what I went through. That post is about what the military does: kill people for the government. I'm trying to explain to children that they shouldn't aspire to become mercenaries, murderers for money. I'm trying to explain to people that human life is worth more than ANYTHING the military can give someone. "I gave Uncle Sam 8 years and I'm fine" good for you, shut the fuck up, fuck you for your "service."

We are murderers. You and I killed people, even if indirectly. I'm trying to save kids from becoming like us. Idgaf that you're unburdened by the blood on your hands, I'm burdened by the blood on mine and I don't want anyone else to get blood on theirs.

I am from Guam. Here, everyone, even the immigrants, have one family member who joins the military. I've been on base and off base and the difference is night and day. I've seen the difference between military kids and locals through a chain link fence. I've watched the base gain electricity 2 weeks into Mawar only to have to wait a year for the house to get back to normal. I've seen, heard, my friends homes get destroyed, only to have military men and woman toss our colonization and our torture in WW2 in our face as to why they deserve more than we do. Two days ago the military launched missiles testing equipment without informing the island. Two months ago I found out they're building a firing range on our most ancient land and aquafer.

I'm indigenous. All my family is military and we are indigenious.

My family is still staying in half of the church that wasn’t affected by the bombing because there is nowhere else to stay other than tents. They are limited to one small meal a day and one shower a week. They are sleeping on the floors, but no one can sleep since there is bombing everywhere around them. Even when there is no bombing, they can still hear the loud buzzing sound of the military planes above them, which would keep anyone who hears it awake. Along with everything, My grandma has diabetes and osteoporosis, so she can’t walk.
