Hiromu Arakawa’s genius is obvious throughout all of FMA but her first and biggest leap of genius was in how she crafted her protagonist.
Arakawa realized the burgeoning youth of the early 2000s wasnt interested in another plucky spry optimistic young shonen protag. Instead she gave us a short ugly egotistical asshole smarter-than-you atheist with so much money and power that people could no longer best him in arguments by telling him “dude shut up ur literally like 12″
Five pages in we’re told Edward’s famous and rich and powerful. Five more pages and he’s calling some girl stupid for thinking God exists. Five more pages and he’s proven right. Five more and he’s kicked an evil priest’s teeth in. And no one can tell his mom on him.
Hiromu Arakawa figured out the dream of every edgy young weeb discovering internet arguments for the first time and she cast them an idol made of gold.
My friend Ahmed is a studious, curious child, but Israel's genocidal campaign against Gaza has taken everything from him. His family lives out of a damaged tent, and rely on his vetted campaign for survival. They have struggled to afford enough food for many months. His body is starting to break down from this prolonged malnutrition, causing him to live with persistent dizziness, vomiting, and intense pain down to his bones.
Ahmed had been fundraising on @ahmedaldani333, but Tumblr staff deleted his blog without notice or explanation. He moved to @ahmedaldanigg and literally within 30 minutes staff deleted that blog too. He's waiting to try again until tumblr's racist campaign to erase Palestinians dies down. Please help his campaign circulate while he is not here to promote it himself.
The last time he texted me, Ahmed told me that the food prices in Gaza are still rising. He is in agony from hunger, unable to share his own campaign on tumblr, and even the small amount of donations he does receive affords less and less nutritious food. I urge you to keep him in your thoughts and to continue to donate to him so his family can provide consistent food. He is a child. His body is supposed to be growing, not wasting away from hunger. Please help him.

Thematic spoilers for One Hundred Years of Solitude related to Melquíades' parchments ahead, as I write down a half-baked thought so I don't forget it-- linguistic relativity, fate, and colonialism:
The novel's conclusion, as Aureliano Babilonia deciphers the last of Melquíades' parchments to discover that they are a prophesy of the Buendía family, speaks to the thematic conclusion that Latin American history has largely been written by outsiders. Or, more accurately, the ideologies that shaped and contained Latin American thought throughout the period of western colonialism were those spoken by outsiders. This is seen in the isolation of the town of Macondo and the cyclical, annual return of Melquíades' people-- how they bring modern inventions to the area, and how they force modernity onto a utopic town.
A more elemental analogy outside of the novel is language itself. Latin America speaks many languages, but the languages that have dominated the region and shaped modern culture the most have been those of conquering, colonial outsiders-- Spanish and Portuguese, namely.
If you buy into linguistic relativity, the idea that language shapes thought, then the imposition of European languages in South America during colonialism can only be seen as a tool of cultural suppression. Personally, the implications of this idea are troubling in relation to my experience reading literature in translation, but that might be too big an idea for a pre-work tumblr post.
The act of prophesy isn't only the expression of an ability to see the future; it's an attempt at shaping the future by means of containing thought about what is possible. While One Hundred Years of Solitude functions as speculative fiction and therefore isn't contained by the laws of realism, its implications about language, prophesy, and fate can be mapped onto the real world in troubling and painfully real ways.
If you made it this far, thank you for justifying an MFA that I don't use and now just collects dust on my bookshelf-- forgive me if this was an elaborate Pepe Silvia moment. Read One Hundred Years of Solitude - it's good.

The way One Hundred Years of Solitude talks about the new generations falling into the same habits as the old is interesting to me. Because on one hand it emphasizes the negative aspects, it accuses the family of repeating the same mistakes over and over. And that is certainly true to a great extent. But I think looking between the lines it's also possible to see some positive elements of this, to see a narrative of the new generation surpassing the old.
On the very same chapter where this repetition is discussed, it is offhandedly mentioned that one of the Aurelianos has been experimenting with flavoring ice to create sherbet - a detail that caught my eye because 200 pages and 60 years earlier, his grandfather dreamed of finding a method to produce ice to share with the town. Furthermore, this chapter ends with another of the Aurelianos succeeding in linking the town up with the railway system, connecting it to the nation as a whole - explicitly a dream of Jose's since before the town was even founded. In these ways you can say that while these men are repeating the past in sharing the dreams of their grandfather. But for him these were pie in the sky dreams that he could toil his whole life for and never come close, while for his grandchildren, they are reasonable and achievable goals, things they are able to accomplish in a bare handful of years.
Thanks to everyone on Tumbler for always reacting!
It really encourages me✨
"Sewing is a gateway drug to thinking through complex problems. It seems really simple; culturally, we make it women's work. Let me tell you: real sewing at any kind of level of proficiency is a bloody magic trick. Sewing, like mold making, involves mental frames that require one to think inside out and backwards. It requires one to work on an order of operations that is often taking into account the reverse. It's a really, really important skill, and if you learn how to sew, you're mostly on your way to carpentry and welding and sheet metal work. I'm not kidding: these are planar forms meeting under rules and conditions. And if you can make a sleeve work, I swear to God, you could build a house."

Teen’s organs failing & NO TREATMENT in >1 MONTH
19-year-old Khalil Al Habil's liver and kidneys are failing. Shrapnel damage from the bombardment that killed his baby brother Omar has gone mostly untreated due to a lack of funds and resources. The ill effects of this damage have progressed to the point that the organs are losing their ability to function. Khalil urgently needs 3 rounds of treatment to combat the effects of his deteriorating liver and kidneys.
We've paid off the first round of treatments but Khalil has two treatments that he still needs. The second costs about $1,250 usd, but we haven’t made much progress in more than a month and his condition is getting progressively worse. We need to meet this second goal ASAP!!!
Current: $9,829 out of $10,407 usd (3 May)
Need to raise: $578 usd
Hello, my name is Khalil, I'm 19 years old, from Gaza.

The thing about pedophilia that no one is talking about is that it’s just baked into society and it goes hand in hand with racism and misogyny
Why do you think the beauty standard for feminized people is being thin, hairless, small, soft featured (but not fat!!!) and generally clueless around sex and ergo easily manipulated
