Sizzling Chinese pepper steak with onions
@thethreefaes || cont.
Ah, so it was hers. He thought he'd seen it fall out of her bag, but the brief crowd between them made it a little difficult to tell. But even her previous surprise didn't explain her hesitation in taking it back. It was like she'd been distracted, with something about… him? Had she noticed something about him?
Her pause caused him to take a closer look in turn, and he was surprised to see that her qi flow only vaguely resembled that of a human. She wasn't undead; she'd have no flow at all, if she was. And he could sense something else about her even through the short distance between them, but it wasn't until her fingers brushed his that he got a proper “taste” of it.
Her life force, her qi, was powerful, bright and earthy and unlike anything he'd felt in a human before. It was like… something ancient. Like the energy he felt walking through an old growth forest. He shook the feeling from his head, briefly shutting his eyes to hide the flicker of dark red in his irises.
“It's a large city. Takes time to get used to where everything is,” he said, slowly opening his eyes again. “You said you're opening a flower shop?”
"Yup."
Sounded about right to him. But then again Antares wasn't particularly picky about body disposal as long as it's never found. He didn't really care if this stranger got caught but he did care about the cops showing up this close to his current gig.
"Dude. I'm not even sure what you are." Well, the other guy was clearly some sort of supernatural entity. What exactly Antares couldn't really tell since this was not something he actively dealt with. He usually dealt with the living and the mechanical.
"I mean, I can see that you're some sort of walking corpse but...uh...nope. Why? Looking for someone specific?"
Not even sure what he was? That was fair. And a good sign, even if he did get the “walking corpse” part right.
Junfeng shook his head.
“Not looking for someone. Making sure others like me aren't around. I've seen the crime rates in this city: if a simple improper burial was enough to make a– another of my kind, the city would be crawling with them.”
Or maybe it simply didn't work outside of Chinese lands?
“My point is, burying it is another option. Perhaps one easier for me than trying to find rope and weights and hoping the bloat won't cause it to resurface in a month.”
@jiangshr asked; ❛ what exactly are you looking for? ❜
If the other had asked him for details, he'd be met with issues. That's why, in his view, generalisation helped. After all, it's easier to say "An anomaly is on the lose" than let word slip that the same displaced entity took the form of a humanoid rhinoceros, determined to barrel through any obstacle that remotely resembled a wall or other barricade, simply because he could.
"Someone that doesn't belong in this world." A phrase that could easily apply to himself, as much as the target he coveted. But he takes care to let that particular detail go unrevealed for now, especially given that he was caught resting for a moment, when approached. "Need you to... stay out of the way." Breathe coming with some difficulty, from the way in which the Society's leader appeared to favour leaning against a nearby wall for support, it could be guessed that he's already encountered the being he's tracking.
And didn't emerge entirely unscathed, as a consequence.
Somewhat distracted by this, it didn't occur to Miguel to realise that something was off about the stranger speaking to him, seen best in the glimpses of an ashen pallor glimpsed. Nor did it put pause to any amount of words, leaking from his mouth like a faucet.
"Did anything... unusual pass through this area today?"
“Something that doesn't belong in this world” made Junfeng freeze for a second, but he was quick to let the reaction flow off of him. This man didn’t smell like a hunter, eastern or otherwise, and he certainly wasn't one of the Heibai Wuchang. He'd know what the Jiangshi was in the first glance if he was.
So he was looking for something else. A different thing that didn't belong. He'd stay out of the way as much as he could, but… Junfeng could sense his qi pooling around his injuries. How successful would the stranger be in his hunt if he was hurt like this?
He thought for a moment, then snapped his fingers.
“I didn't see it happen, but a shop across from mine had a giant hole blown in the side of their building. Whatever it was wrecked the inside, too. We thought something exploded, but they said something big and grey charged through like a… what did she say… like a tank on legs? Is that the unusual you're looking for?”
She automatically noticed how his nose wrinkled up to being asked if he were a vampire. Guess he didn't like that? She quirks a brow and rests her hands on her hips as she looks over at him.
Qian Junfeng. Well, at least she has his name now and what he... kinda is? She cants her head to the side. What did that mean? A vampire that didn't die due to sunlight? What kind of vampire or... vampire adjacent creature was he?
"Pleasure t'make your acquaintance," she says, crossing her arms over her chest as she leans against one of the wooden pillars that helped support the roof. "Well, you're in the barn of a man named Ryan Alexander, but you're currently talking to Stevie Joe," she tells him. She wouldn't give him her last name. If what he was was similar to the kind she dealt with, the fae, you never gave them your full name.
"Now... You mentioned not being a, y'know, the kind of vampire that dies in daylight or drinks blood. What are ya then because... that's the only kind that seem to want to wander this way."
Fortunately for her, Jiangshi had no power over names, full or otherwise. If he'd known that there were creatures who could hurt you with only your name, perhaps he wouldn't have been so quick to give his.
“I doubt you would have seen anything like me, then,” he said. “I am… quite far from home, to put it simply.”
And he wasn't supposed to exist, but he kept that part to himself.
“A Jiangshi. Consider me an… energy vampire, if you must.”

Mood Magic prompts: ☕🎶🖤📱
☕ Coffee/tea mood: caffeinated conqueror, chill sipper, or “does this even exist?”
Definitely tea! Caffeine doesn't do anything for him, so he can drink whatever he wants, whenever he wants.
🎶 Music vibes: epic soundtrack, soft hum, or whatever catches the wind?
Soft hum or whatever catches the wind! He's not sure about some of these modern bands, but he's heard some very nice orchestral tracks.
🖤 Dark thoughts: plotting world domination, brooding poet, or “don’t mind me”?
"Don't mind me". He's just trying to survive and keep himself out of too much trouble, tbh.
📱 Texting mood: precise strategist, emojis only, or ghost until absolutely necessary?
He tends to ghost, but only because he keeps his phone on silent and forgets to check it (which can cause some issues with work ;v;)
// one thing that kinda bugged me about gentry chau
it's very steeped it is in Chinese mythology. Awesome!
why were there Japanese nekomata in it?
Muse and Mun.
@jiangshr || cont. from here
It was a thermal camera and Shelley was narrowing his eyes at it while the other narrowed his eyes at him. A man walking around without a heat signature wasn't what he'd set out to find tonight but consider him intrigued enough to divert his attentions.
"Ah. It's still open?" It was kinda late and he hadn't taken a look at the opening hours of any of the restaurants in the area.
"Alright then. I'm assuming you mean the one we're right next to." " Knowing where this guy worked would probably be beneficial in the long run. Y'know, so he could stop by at any time to harass question the other staff about it.
There was a benefit to today's technology: wherever that video footage ended up, there would be plenty of people writing it off as CG or AI or whatever they called it these days. And he was far enough from China that he doubted anyone who knew what it really was would be able to do anything about it. It wasn't like he was really hurting anyone anyway.
"It is. We stay open later on the weekends."
Especially with the good reputation the restaurant now had. Junfeng had only stepped outside to get out of the heat of the kitchen for a moment. He was sure his boss didn't expect him to come back in with a customer.
He led the way to the front and stepped back into the shop. "Take a seat wherever you like. Someone will be with you in a moment."
Picrew.
