"I'm better off like this, just the way I am." There's a decisive firmness in his voice as if he was trying to convince the other person, if not himself.
He did long for a relationship β a connection that wasn't necessarily romantic, but none of that had ever panned out well. Might as well just settle for what he can actuallt have.

"I don't get jealous. Such feelings are beneath me," he replies lyingly, like a liar. Of course, he gets jealous. He doesn't even need to be dating a person for that.
A part of him is aware that he really wasn't all that likeable. He still has no idea what his past partners even saw in him aside from the fact that they'd been close. Maybe that had been enough. It had been enough for him, to just be close to someone and to want to remain being with them irregardless of what the relationship was labelled as.
If he had been jealous at any point (and he had been) it would be because he'd been afraid that his partner (or friend or whatever) would prefer the company of someone more likeable than he is. He certainly hasn't set a particularly high bar.

"Pretty much all of them started off platonic. I've never specifically seeked out a romantic relationship before. All three...four.. of them were already part of my social circle to start with."

"I didn't mind his lack of social skills, that was fine. What's not fine was his chronic lateness. I mean...he had a car. It wasn't like he had to wait for the bus...."
"One time he showed up two hours late. Two. Hours. That was supposed to be our whole date. I finished our joint project on my own! I was running on a tight schedule then." Just recalling it made his face twitch in irritation.
"And you know what his excuse β his reason for this was? He said he ran into a motorcyclist. Which...alright. Fine. But then he said he had to get out of the car, carry the stranger off the road, and make sure they were not dying...drove them to a nearby clinic just in case."
"And you know....it got me thinking...was I really that unimportant to him? You know, compared to some total stranger on a bike? Was that really worth it?"

"Yes, I have."

"You don't have to look that surprised. I was... more sociable back in high school and college." Relatively sociable, that is. He was introverted back then as well, the main difference was that he wasn't practically married to his job and he was actually open to dating if the relationship started with friendship.
Those relationships had been few and far between though, and none of them lasted more than half a year.
