Chicago Yiddish
Jumblr,
If anyone uses Facebook and wants to give a click to The Chicago Yivo page, either like or follow - there’s a lot of Yiddish cultural events coming this summer!
https://www.facebook.com/ChicagoYIVO/
What Is YiVO:
The acronym “YIVO” stands for yidisher visnshaftlekher institut. Founded in 1925 in Vilna, Poland (now Vilnius, Lithuania) and based in New York City since 1940, YIVO is today the world’s preeminent resource center for East European Jewish Studies; Yiddish language, literature, and folklore; and the American Jewish immigrant experience.
The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research was founded in Vilna, Poland, in 1925 and relocated to New York City in 1940. Our mission is to preserve, study and teach the cultural history of Jewish life throughout Eastern Europe, Germany and Russia. Our educational and public outreach programs concentrate on all aspects of this 1000-year history and its continuing influence in America. YIVO’s archival collections and library constitute the single greatest resource for such study in the world, including approximately 24 million letters, manuscripts, photographs, films, sound recordings, art works, and artifacts; as well as the largest collection of Yiddish-language materials in the world
Inter-generational Shabbes Tish
There’s cholent — the word that’s spelled out in a cookbook as טשאָלנט . But what ends up in front of you at a shabbes tish, served in a paper bowl — is chulent. What changes a clear kometzalef “oh” into a soft, nearly melted “uh” sound, is the אָ cooked down, relaxing into the surrounding consonants. The transformation lends itself not to the cooking process, but to the shabbesdik environment in which it is served. Maybe one cooks cholent but what we all want is chulent. Nearly a one syllable word. The “uh” sound in the word contains all the warmth, comfort, and pleasure in shabbes. For what I hope will become a recurring trend in our community, I recently attended an intergenerational shabbes tish. This was the most literal expression of “l’dor v’dor” I have ever taken part in. To hear native speakers conversing with the bright, enthusiastic yungelayt delighted my ears. There is a palpable hunger throughout this current generation for Yiddishkayt. Some have gone so far as to use the term “spiritually starving”. They want relevant ways to not only “be” Jewish, but ways to “do” Jewish. Ways that are not rooted in statehood. Oftentimes these are Jewish youth who are dissatisfied with and/or disconnected from the modern State of Israel. They are Jewish anarchists, socialists, and would-be-Bundists — who have yet to learn the phrase mir zaynen do. While mixing and speaking with my fellow tishers, I answered at least two times the same basic kashe. Why are you studying/speaking Yiddish? A common answer is usually something along the lines of “well, nostalgia”. We all miss our parents, our grandparents, the sound of their voice. The Yiddish language is a container, a vessel, to transport the entirety of our peoplehood. Only through the deliberate and intentional teaching of the Yiddish language can we transmit the entirety of our past into the generation that will become the Yiddish speaking future. I dream of an epoch where Yiddish is the default language of North American Ashkenazi Jewry. Across all communities, denominations, and affiliations. I proudly told someone “I speak Yiddish because I’m Jewish.” They asked ,“so why not just speak Ivrit?” Without flinching, I replied, “Because I’m not Israeli.” I wait for the day where the common question is “So what are you going to do with {your} Yiddish?” rather than the curious “why?” I don’t want to put the Yiddish language on some kind of radical spectrum. To preserve and protect our cultural heritage through our national language is in my opinion a fairly conservative thing to do. I want Jews to have it in their heads that Yiddish is not a “foreign” language. It already belongs to them, paid for in full with smoke and ash. It’s their inheritance, their entitlement, their real birthright. Got zol ophitn undz!
Feel free to reblog in the Jumblr sphere!
Yiddish Farm Scholarship!
Check out this exciting video from The Yiddish Farm in Goshen, NY. They’re trying to have a year-round scholarship fund for perspective students. Everyone should go to Yiddish Farm, and everyone who can give to Yiddish Farm - should give to Yiddish Farm. It’s a wonderful and highly effective program. Immersion works!
Please Repost!

goyim + garbage = goybage
I had to blot someones name out of my life recently after they confirmed their antisemitism to me. I wrote them this letter:
Dear _____,
I felt really disturbed by the conversation I had to have with you at (Local Bar) last week - where you were describing some of your vacation highlights of your recent trip to Eastern Europe. It sounded normal at first - you describing visiting such sites in Prague as the Jewish Cemetery and a Holocaust Exhibit....which, in your own words - was depressing. (I tend to agree). Then you took a quite sinister turn when you depicted how you deliberately bumped into two seemingly (to you) Orthodox Jewish men, who in your own words --- "just to be a dick.." and followed up by "....you know because they're not allowed to touch women..." Why in the fuck would you go to another country, another community, another people that's not you -- and act like an complete asshole. For what? Because in your garbage heap of a mind, this was some how a political act? And the impossible to ignore disgusting irony -- of "deliberately bumping into a {Shomer Negiah Jew} a Jew who, in your fucking moronic words "aren't allowed to touch women..." Is that you of all people, who seems to be the most vocal and outspoken about "fuck street harassment!" and against legitimate things like that -- these Jewish Men base a whole part of their lives to specially NOT leer at women or make advances... Isn't that what you fucking want in some way or another?! And this is somehow ... some way... doesn't agree with you... because they're Jewish? Not good enough for you... because they're Jewish?n You do this in what, the name of feminism? Disgusting. Or much more possible that you're just a fucking garden variety piece of shit antisemite - who made a conscious decision to try and "mess" with Jewish people in Jewish area while on vacation. And regale the story to...another Jew in your home city? And the whole time, you're telling me about this as if it's some high point of your fucking vacation. What the fuck do you think I would say or to think? I should have spit right in your face right then and there. We Jews have a saying that if you're not sure someone's an antisemite or not - to just give a little scratch. Meaning their not too far under the surface, lies the kind of casual unchecked antisemitic shit that you seem to spew out. But I didn't even need to give you any kind of scratch, you showed me yourself what kind of person you are to Jews on the inside. Why you somehow felt the need to tell me about your disgusting behavior is beyond me. No other reason then you're a piece of shit. I can never forget your fucking stupid comment you made to me last year while sitting in the basement of (Local DIY Space) where I'll quote you word for word here "...“…So yea, I went to my first Passover Seder a few years ago, and mmhm the food was amazing! I mean, the brisket was amazing! Literally, the best I ever had. Now I know why the nazis must have gone after the Jews, they were jealous of all the amazing food they had!!” You should choke on the next piece of brisket you eat. I no longer want anything to do with you ever again. You're a dangerous mix and you make me both uncomfortable and angry. I never want to talk to you, see you, hang out with, or associate with you in any way. Do not attend any show I am playing, as I can't stand the idea of someone like you being entertained by a drop of my labor or energy. I don't owe you a benefit of a doubt either. This ends here and you can fuck off. Don't bother apologizing for what you really are, just another armchair antisemite.

Do something about antisemitic hate mail, general antisemitism, and staff response on Tumblr!
For too long, Jews on Tumblr have had to deal with antisemitic hate mail, general antisemitism, and a mediocre staff response to our complaints. We have many anecdotes of antisemitism that we experience on tumblr, but we do not have data. Data can be more powerful than anecdotes when trying to convince companies such as Yahoo and Tumblr to change their ways. This is why I have created a survey about antisemitism on Tumblr (most specifically hate mail). Whether you are converting to Judaism, openly Jewish on Tumblr, or a not openly Jewish Jew your responses to this survey are powerful.
Also, it would be awesome if you would reblog this post. We need as much data as possible for effective advocacy.

list of ladino learning resources
ladino, (d)juezmo, (d)judio, (d)judeo-espanyol is an endangered jewish language spoken by sefardi jews in communities in israel, the balkans, turkey and the americas. although historically written in rashi script (or solitreo, rashi’s cursive form) judezmo is mostly written phonetically, with latin letters.
ladino is at very precarious point in it’s history and at risk of dying, but is experiencing a revival on the internet!!
feel free to add anything you know of, and i’ll keep this updated as i find more things!
book resources
alice’s adventures in wonderland in ladino. sometimes these things tend to have kind of stilted, unnatural language (i have read the yiddish version from this same series and its not ungrammatical, just, like, uncomfortable). that being said, lots of interesting vocabulary could be learned from it!
un ramo de poemas // a bouquet of poems by haim vitali sadacca a bilingual book of poetry by a beautiful poet.
beginners ladino by alla markova one of the only beginners textbooks of ladino, and it comes with audio. a physical copy is ridiculously expensive, but there’s a kindle edition for $30 which is a little more reasonable.
internet resources
the muestra lingua section in ladino of esefarad, a blog that’s mostly in spanish about sefardi topics. the ladino section in particular really focuses on sephardi history and culture and is very interesting.
şalom, a turkish jewish magazine, has a small section in ladino. it looks like they only post the most recent articles online (there are two articles, but they’re from this week) so check often and save articles for studying.
aki yerushalayim, an israeli ladino magazine. they also only have their most recent issue online, but they only publish twice a year so you have plenty of time to study it, and their international subscription is only $40.
diksionario de ladinokomunita is the best online ladino dictionary i’ve seen so far. it’s still not amazing but certainly better than any of its competition and it’s a work in progress by the members of ladinokomunita.
two websites for different parts of the same group, ladinokomunita. first, their yahoo groups page, which is pretty popular, several hundred members and several posts a week. then there’s their website, where they’ve got like 10 or 15 articles about sefardi topics. these are the same people who are building the dictionary above.
a quick barebones video lesson on how to write solitreo, the cursive version of the rashi hebrew script traditionally used to write judezmo.
קול ישראל בלאדינו // kol yisrael beladino, an israel radio station’s ladino news section. not the most interesting thing in the world but can still be interesting to listen to.
Also!
http://www.solitreo.com/ladinotype/ is a great website for translating romanized Ladino into Solitreo characters.
http://www.solitreo.com/ladinotype/chart.php is the same persons chart of Solitreo to Latin letter equivalences.
And another thing: https://www.academia.edu/1986522/A_Guide_to_Reading_and_Writing_Judezmo !!!!
@ariminak
