On The Song of Achilles Chapter 2
Based on the specific suitors mentioned in this chapter I assume the primary source used was Pseudo-Apollodorus' Library 3.10.8-3.10.9 . The oath is offered up by Odysseus in 3.10.9 "Seeing the multitude of these, Tyndareus feared that if one were chosen, the rest would revolt. But Odysseus promising that, if he would assist him in Penelope's marriage, he would devise some means by which no revolt would arise, Tyndareus promised to assist him, and said that he would make all the suitors swear to help, if the chosen groom were wronged by anyone concerning the marriage. When Tyndareus heard this, he made the suitors swear, and he himself chose Menelaus as groom." which is basically exactly what happens in pages 14-15 of The Song of Achilles(standard edition). I also have to give a shout out to the mention of Philoctetes being given the bow of Heracles, and offering it for Helen. Fun fact! Heracles also left his hydra-blood dipped arrows to Philoctetes upon his mortal death which are eventually used to kill Alexandros(Paris) towards the end of the war(book 10 of The Posthomerica if you wanna read it)
See yall next week! hopefully actually on tuesday!
So I see a bunch of flack given to The Song of Achilles, so I'm starting my re-read as a queer guy and a classics major I will, reflect on my own life experiences, discussions in class, and classical greek and roman sources as I read. In order to reach an overall conclusion on it as an adaptation and also as queer rep. Yes this will include interpretation of the original greek and latin and discussions on how it's translated. Follow along for this adventure!
On The Song of Achilles: Chapter 1
So the book begins with practically wholly new original story, as much is not said of Patroclus' life before the death of Clysonymus(we'll get there in a few chapters don't worry). So it makes sense to write something to flesh it out, I will admit the choice to consult a Roman source on the parentage of Patroclus is odd, as while Menoetius is almost always listed as the father of Patroclus, Philomela is only listed as his mother in Hyginus' Fabulae "Patroclus, son of Menoetius and Philomela, from Phthia"(Hyginus' Fabulae 97). And I do question the choice to make Patroclus and his mother "simple" seemed like just a way to justify Patroclus' eventual banishment from Opus.
P.S.- I will be going chapter-by-chapter week-by-week, see yall next Tuesday for chapter 2!

I have a bad habit of getting very upset when people say wrong things about mythology and I can’t correct the thing they said (for example the video I’m watching where someone just said that Jupiter is the Roman equivalent to Aries)

In Digimon Adventure we see that the bond between humans and Digimon in the case of the original 8 chosen children comes from the mission to restore the balance of the Digital World, which had been disrupted by darkness. It's a bond that's directly tied to a system stabilizing function.
02 shows that there are more chosen children all over the world, though not all of them are connected to that same mission or even know about the Digital World, so the bond can exist without that function of restoring balance.
Hurricane Touchdown showed with Chocomon that Digimon can be reborn and that their bond can be reestablished.
In Tri it's shown that bonds are maintained as long as they fit within the balance of the Digital World, and when they stop fitting, the system acts to readjust or reset that stability.
In Last Evolution Kizuna we see that the bond exists as long as both share a path or a mutual need in their lives, and when that disappears, the bond fades even though there's still affection.
The original 8 chosen children are more closely tied to the initial function of balance in the Digital World, so their bond is more sensitive to changes in that condition. Takeru and Hikari, as part of the 02 generation follow a different pattern where the bond doesn't depend on that mission.
From that logic, Taichi, Agumon and the others will meet again when the conditions align once more (I still have hopes for another Digimon Adventure movie or series).
It doesn't matter if in 02 The Beginning the digivices are removed if it's understood that they originally form part of a system that regulates digivolution through the bond, but they're not essential either for the bond or for digivolution itself.
And, since the 02 epilogue suggests that coexistence between humans and Digimon is already stable, there'll come a point where the bond no longer depends on external control like Homeostasis or on a crisis such as the imbalance caused by darkness in the Digital World.
To reach that future of the 02 epilogue… will Diplomat Taichi have managed to "negotiate" any peace treaty?

I am so annoyed rn, I can't fine my copy of Hesiod's Theogany and Works & Days. I was really hoping to pick them up while at my parents' house for winter break, but I guess I'll suffer back on campus.

a quick psa to anyone recently getting into greek mythology and is a victim of tumblr and/or tiktok misconceptions:
-there is no shame in being introduced to mytholgy from something like percy jackson, epic the musical or anything like that, but keep in mind that actual myths are going to be VERY different from modern retellings
-the myth of medusa you probably know (her being a victim of poseidon and being cursed by athena) isn't 100% accurate to GREEK mythology (look up ovid)
-there is no version of persephone's abduction in which persephone willingly stays with hades, that's a tumblr invention (look up homeric hymn to demeter)
-as much as i would like it, no, cerberus' name does not mean "spot" (probably a misunderstanding from this wikipedia article)
-zeus isn't the only god who does terrible things to women, your fav male god probably has done the same
-on that note, your fav greek hero has probably done some heinous shit as well
-gods are more complicated than simply being "god of [insert thing]", many titles overlap between gods and some may even change depending on where they were worshipped
-also, apollo and artemis being the gods of the sun and the moon isn't 100% accurate, their main aspects as deities originally were music and the hunt
-titans and gods aren't two wholly different concepts, titan is just the word used to decribe the generation of gods before the olympians
-hector isn't the villain some people make him out to be
-hephaestus WAS married to aphrodite. they divorced. yes, divorce was a thing in ancient greece. hephaestus' wife is aglaia
-ancient greek society didn't have the same concepts of sexuality that we have now, it's incorrect to describe virgin goddesses like artemis and athena as lesbians, BUT it's also not wholly accurate to describe them as aromantic/asexual, it's more complex than that
-you can never fully understand certain myths if you don't understand the societal context in which they were told
-myths have lots and lots of retellings, there isn't one singular "canon", but we can try to distinguish between older and newer versions and bewteen greek and roman versions
-most of what you know about sparta is probably incorrect
-reading/waching retellings is not a substitute to reading the original myths, read the iliad! read the odyssey! i know they may seem intimidating, but they're much more entertaining than you may think
greek mythology is so complex and interesting, don't go into it with preconcieved notions! try to be open to learn!
THIS! THIS RIGHT HERE IS WHAT I'M ABOUT! WOOOOOOO
people who learned about greek mythology due reasons that DONT involve having read percy jackson at 12 freak me out, like what the FUCK was going on in your life that you found out that zeus turned into a pigeon to woo his wife like HOW
You see, I was a child with unmonitored access to the internet.
