infinite bummer

Saw Longlegs the other night and my girlfriend and I turned to one another at the end and said essentially at the same time, "...was that kinda transphobic...?" It's not a question meant to condemn but just kind of a general curiosity.

That q aside I've been kind of bummed by horror movies lately...it feels like plots are being spoonfed to us and it's kind of ruined the fun? I felt this way about Late Night With the Devil as well and its been really unfortunate. Most of the the fun in a "what the fuck did I just watch?" movie is the "what the fuck did I just watch?" part. I think that's why Skinamarink hit for me. There's a lot that the viewer has to fill in, sometimes literally while we're staring at shots of grainy supposedly empty door ways and upside down ceilings for an hour (but really, I honestly loved the fuck out of this movie and it shook me to my core. I don't expect it to land for everyone but damn did it get me).

There's a lot of framing the director does in Longlegs to establish the difference between the past and the present but there's still so much exposition that forces the movie to a jarring halt in the third act. There were some really lovely reveals and the first 40 minutes are absolutely beautiful but a lot just didn't connect for me. There are a lot of other nitpicky things I didn't like but won't talk about because spoilers I guess.

Anyway I'm a dummy that doesn't know how to talk about movies.

Go support your local theater and see it if you want. Movies are cool and I like them a lot and it's pretty rare that I watch a movie and wish I hadn't.

PS if you liked Late Night With the Devil try out Ghostwatch (1992). V fun BBC production that had a lot of people calling in asking if it was real.

my girlfriend is in London for the week and while I miss her deeply I'm so fucking stoked to just be by myself while she's away. I don't even have plans I just want to sit by myself and watch my ever growing backlog of movies.
