People tell me I shouldn't aim to be as good as someone I like but instead to better than them. Why is that?

eeeh…. it sounds like one of those typical “aim for the skyyy” motivational lines ppl say to encourage you.

But like…. don’t look at other artists as your “rivals” that you must “overcome” or “surpass” in order to reach your goal as an artist. That’s kinda killing the point of making art overall.

Inspiration and influence are good things, and your art will have it’s own style sooner or later. And no style is better than the other.

as I have said before:

Art is not a race

Art is not a contest

Art is a marathon where we all run together.
