I've been rewatching pokemon movies every couple weeks or so because they are the cure to any stress and woe, and have decided to be annoying about it
-We all love the entei movie, and if you don't it's okay to be wrong, but when I tell you I cannot watch this movie without crying from beginning to end, I mean it.
Solid film on its own, but it always hits me extra hard as a fish that struggles with maladaptive daydreaming. Creating your own world where everything always goes your way to escape the soul-crushing trauma that is your reality thus causing you to lose touch with reality was my entire childhood and adolescence. In fact I only recently figured out that my cult-like devotion to drawing was a part of that desire to escape, and hey what do you know, that led to my relationship with art being extremely unhealthy, so when the burnout finally hit once I made real friends and started to improve my situation so I no longer needed art in order to escape, it hit like a train! Yippee!
-THE POWER OF US, MAN, OH MY GOD I AM EMOTIONALLY DESTROYED IN THE BEST WAY. All of these characters are a joy to watch grow, I bawled my eyes out during each of their crescendos, and *GASP* a pokemon movie with actually funny dialogue and jokes?! Never thought I'd see the day.
-AYO FUCK WHOEVER MADE THIS MOVIE, I WILL BE SUING FOR EMOTIONAL DISTRESS /J. Hell hath no fury like a mother who's daughter was ripped away from her, hOLY SHIT I love the themes at play here. When I tell you a pokemon movie somehow managed to make my grown-ass adult stomach churn multiple times while watching the callous evil of its villain without spilling a drop of blood, you're not allowed to call me a bubble blowing baby until you watch it too.
-This movie is great, y'all just mad they let a woman voice Mewtwo (congrats on your transition, queen). This one has a lot of good things to say about living to live instead of to survive, and the benefits of going out of your way to help others. Which is kinda pokemon's whole thing, but I think this one delivers the message the best. Also that convo between mega Mewtwo and Genesect? Breathtaking. I went through a box of tissues.
-Okay so the Keldio movie is SURPRISINGLY high quality. The story flows really well, the voice acting is on point, the symbolism in the animation is so refreshing to see, the different shots and cuts were notable because I'd never seen them be that good before, the colours and lighting looked great, the BATTLE CHOREOGRAPHY WAS AMAZING (who'd have thought pokemon battles could be so fun to watch without Brock or Cilain or someone else interrupting every 15 seconds to explain to the viewer what they just watched), and it doesn't take up too much of your time. Iirc it's actually the shortest pokemon movie to date. My only complaint is some truly unfortunate dialogue choices that no amount of good voice acting can make sound natural.
-Watch the prologue. We all know this movie rocks (thank you Takashi Shouto) but that prologue makes everything hit so much harder. I'm tearing up right now just THINKING about: "Don't be sad, Mewtwo. You should be happy! You're alive, and life is wonderful." LITERALLY I'M FUCKING CRYING AGAIN AS I TYPE. SHIT.
-Okay cards on the table: this is 80% nostalgia. This movie makes me cry almost as much as the entei movie. It's so ironic that everyone calls Darkrai an edgelord when two of his most notable appearances are: fighting two literal gods at once and ultimately giving his life to protect this little town he calls home and all the people and pokemon living there, even thought they weren't particularly kind to him, and begging the player character in ZA for help to escape the pain of his rogue mega evolution. IT'S NOT HIS FAULT HE'S CURSED WITH THE NIGHTMARE-INATOR BRO
-Bro, this movie is a whole mood. Gorgeous scenery, beautiful soundtrack, heartbreaking climax and conclusion. WE GET TO SEE THROUGH LATIOS' EYES FROM POKE-HEAVEN BRO, IF YOU'RE NOT CRYING YOU HAVE NO SOUL /lh. Genuinely love the dynamic between the Latis and Ash, could have done without the weird romance but it doesn't take up too much of the viewer's time so I can get over it.
-Don't have much to say about these next ones. Power of friendship ftw, gorgeous aurora dancing between the Deoxys will always get me. Tho the trauma plot was done better in entei, power of us, keldio, and mewtwo's movies, so it didn't really hit for me.
-Lucario about to piss me off bro. I GET that he has staff PTSD but I feel like that could manifest in more interesting ways than being a dickhead to the people who are trying to help you. It's realistic but it's not fun to watch. Over-all it felt kinda slapped-together. Plots were introduced then dropped or hastily wrapped up. Idek why Kidd was there, she didn't do anything that the other side characters or main characters (LIKE FUCKIN LUCARIO) could have done. But I was a tad too distracted by how cool everything looked and sounded to notice all these issues until a few weeks later, so, I will take my nat 1 on perception like a grown up.
-We love to see Max getting some focus. Him and Jirachi were delightful to watch, and I had a good time going all reddit-therapist on Diane when she talked about Butler. Just a lovely time all around.
-I feel the same way about this movie as I do the Jirachi movie, but I'm sorry, I CANNOT get over how awful Ash and Max's voice actors are. It took me RIGHT out of the movie every single time. Also why tf is Ash getting all the spotlight in the climax, this is MAY'S MOVIE. Manaphy deserved better man.
-It's a nice film with great ambiance and has a gut-wrenching climax with that peak butterfree bonding scene in there, but otherwise kinda meh. It doesn't piss me off nearly as much as the Lucario movie tho, in retrospect I should have put that lower cuz I'd rather watch this. Sorry Celebi.
-They did Takashi Shouto so fucking dirty with this shit man. Lugia is HIS Pokemon, and they didn't even let him tell HIS OWN STORY about HIS OWN POKEMON, which caused the movie to flop, because of course it did wtf is this whole mess?? At least they let him tell the proper story in the anime but THAT'S NOT GOOD ENOUGH DAMN IT. I WANT TO WATCH HIS MOVIE, NOT THE MISOGYNISTIC EXECUTIVE'S MOVIE. RIP Mr. Takashi, I wish I could read Japanese so I could give your book a shot.
-Black and White: same movie, same mid experience. Latios and Latias did it better. Also fuck Damen's bitchass, it's just N again but for land and 'the dragon force' instead of pokemon.
-The only positive I had about Arceus was the soundtrack. That shit FUCKS. Damos made a pretty good speech at the end too, I guess. Overall disappointing though, too much time meandering and rehashing shit the viewer already knows while the villain gets all his shit in order because y'all aREN'T DOING ANYTHING, MOVE *pokes with big stick*
-Hoopa movie: there's a theme in this movie about how hollow life is when you go through it lusting for power and glory, destroying all in your path to do so, or just to feel something, instead of sitting down to enjoy the simple pleasures that truly make life worth living, but good luck finding it under all the flashy mega evolutions and poorly choreographed fight scenes.
-Diance movie: a less interesting version of the Hoopa movie, somehow.
-The Shaymin movie is far too long. It's Keldio but wordier and with a far less enjoyable co-lead. Boring battles, boring villain, boring climax. Damn shame (in).
