Jack Wolfe as Peter Duchene in RSC's The Magician's Elephant
“We must ask ourselves these questions as often as we dare. How will the world change if we do not question it?" "The world cannot be changed," said Gloria. "The world is what the world is and has forever been." "No," said Leo Matienne softly, "I will not believe that. For here is Peter standing before us, asking us to make it something different.”
Kate DiCamillo, The Magician's Elephant
i love books and i love musicals and i love musicals made from books and i love discovering musicals based off of books i already know and i love discovering musicals and then finding out it's based off a book and then reading the book and either way having the two mediums together telling a story i love is simply magic

To know how it ends, and still begin to sing it again, as if it might turn out this time...

what does it say about me that my comfort musical is a tragedy (yes this is about hadestown)
hey don't cry. springtime orphydice
help my dad asked what i was watching and i said "hadestown" but he thought i said "eighties-town" and he asked if there were a lot of good eighties songs in it so now i'm imagining hadestown as some kind of jukebox 80s musical
it's like i'd known you all along, i knew you before we met, but i don't even know you yet.
well guess it's crying over hadestown hours again

I love you backstage theatre.
I love you lights. I love you sound. I love you props. I love you costumes. I love you stage managers. I love you set. I love you directors. I love you choreographers. I love you pit. I love you playwrights. I love you producers. I love you off-stage voice actors. I love you flyers. I love you casting. I love you electricians. I love you publicity. I love you house. I love you everyone I missed.
Backstage theatre often goes unnoticed and underappreciated, so from your fellow tractor (techie and actor): I love you all, theatre would not be possible without you <3

"musicals aren't realistic, no one breaks out in song and dance like that" maybe YOU don't but i certainly do
the unlikely pilgrimage of harold fry cast recording thoughts !
i'm putting my thoughts of all the songs from the unlikely pilgrimage of harold fry cast recording album here cause i have no one to talk to about it lol
i've listened to/watched the bootleg of the original production with jack wolfe, so i compare the two quite a bit with the changes they made. spoilers ahead ofc.
first overall, i'm so happy there's a cast recording for this musical! i think it's such a special story about grief and healing, and i just finished the book so everything hurts like 70x more (the book was great! i def recommend.) i really enjoyed listening to the cast recording and it was just as devasting as when i listened to/watched the bootleg. (so far this musical is the only bootleg i've actually bought from someone haha.) also i could never parse all the lyrics from the bootlegs so it's nice to have a clear recording of everything !
also i feel that some of my thoughts/opinions come from the fact that this is one of the only musicals where i listened to a bootleg first and then a cast album, so it's kinda a different experience. cast recordings in general feel very polished and clean and ofc doesn't capture all the emotion from an actual stage performance, which i definitely felt was the case with this musical.
ok the songs!
