WITHIN ME .

          at   first ,   something   deep   within   her   chest   tightened .   she   could   feel   the   anger   radiating   off   him   in   waves ,   in   the   space   between   them   &   through   the   ever   present   bond   they   shared .   but   then ,   she   felt   it .   before   he   spoke   again ,   the   quiet   whisper   of   light   that   still   glimmered   within   him .   ben   solo ,   not   the   monster   in   a   mask   she’d   once   encountered .   it   moves   her   closer   to   him ,   a   tentative   step   so   as   to   test   the   waters .     ❛   you   can   come   with   me .   you   can   go   home .   i’m   with   you .   ❜     &   she   meant   it   sincerely ,   peering   up   at   him ,   head   tilted   slightly .     ❛   i   do .   ❜     she   whispered   the   words   so   gently   she   wasn’t   sure   if   he’d   heard   her .   but   she’d   promised   him   once   that   he   wasn’t   alone .   &   she   meant   it   now   as   much   as   she   had   then .

          eyes   widened ,   ever   so   slightly .   her   expression   was   telling   of   disbelief ,   some   horror   &   the   smallest   tinge   of   sadness .     ❛   don’t   do   this ,   ben ,   ❜   her   voice   was   quiet ,   words   meant   only   for   him .     ❛   please   don’t   go   this   way .   ❜

          she   looked   over   from   where   she   sat ,   across   the   room ,   mind   somewhere   else .   it   took   her   a   few   moments   to   register   what   he   meant ,   eyes   landing   on   the   ancient   texts   placed   before   him .     ❛    i’ll   take   your   word   for   it ,   ❜   she   quipped ,   leaning   over   to   look   more   closely   at   the   pile .     ❛   are   those   master   skywalker’s   journals  ?   ❜

          a   frustrated   puff   of   air ,   lips   parted   slightly ,   sun   beating   down   relentlessly .   be   with   me .   she’d   been   at   it   for   hours   with   no   sign   of   improvement .   she   felt   stuck ,   tangled   up   in   herself   &   lost   somewhere   inside   her   mind .   recently ,   it   had   only   been   harder   to   concentrate .   it   was   rare   that   she   found   herself   without   her   mind   drifting ,   stuck   in   a   loop   of   wanting   to   be   better   &   yet   frozen   somehow   in   the   same   place .   unmoving .     ❛    it’s   just   all   in   my   head .   i   can’t   get   out   of   it .   i’ll   do   better .  ❜     although   honest ,   she   didn’t   have   the   slightest   idea   on   how .

          her   fingers   curled   around   the   hilt ,   but   she   left   it   concealed ,   hoping   this   wouldn’t   lead   to  a  fight .   but   knowing   the   history   of   the   sith ,   the   one’s   she’d   faced ,   the   terror   she’d   seen   only   in   glimpses ,   she   knew   her   hoping   was   futile .   it   was   in   her   blood ,   it   seemed .   the   fight ,   the   need   to   prove   herself   to   the   generations   of   jedi   relying   on   her .   watching   her .   placing   their   trust   in   her    to   carry   on   a   legacy   she   was   only   now   understanding .   come   what   may ,   she   was   still   an   excellent   fighter .   a   warrior   in   her   own   right .   &   she   wouldn’t   cower   or   bend   to   the   will   of   any   man ,   let   alone   a   sith .     ❛    you   first .   ❜     she   responded   with   a   cool   confidence ,   one   she’d   learned   from   her   master ,   feeling   his   mind   attempting   to   probe   into   her   own .   she   resisted ,   pushing   back   with   the   same   amount   of   force ,   not  attempting   to   enter   his   mind   but   to  simply   keep   him   out   of   reach   of   her’s .
