It's time for another One Piece Wednesday! Before we get to our irregularly scheduled liveblogging, look at this wonderful toy:
She's going to look so good with the other Straw Hats!
Anyway, last time the gang met that cute green-haired mermaid from the Hatchi cover story ages ago. Will she help them finally get to Fishman Island? Apparently not, according to some comments made on the last liveblog, so uh... I'm not sure where the story will go from here, but I'm excited to find out!
...I hope that's not where the crew is headed.
Dragon Ball-ass character concept and design. Oda is the one true heir of Toriyama.
It's interesting to me that this whole thing is, like, a direct sequel to the Hatchi cover story. I guess the cover stories are a lot more essential reading than I thought? I mean, I was already enjoying them, but shit, I didn't think one would be this relevant.
Also it's nice to see how the Straw Hats all lock in as soon as they hear this nice stranger is in trouble.
...well, almost all the Straw Hats, anyway.
All the men of the Straw Hat crew have the same ability as the sheep in The Sheep Detectives to selectively erase parts of their memory, apparently. This one goes out to all my fellow The Sheep Detectives fans here on tumblr.
Luffy finally learns of the true enemy of all pirates: the British.
But on a more serious note, it's interesting from a mythology perspective to make mermaids the targets and victims of a slave trade, given how a good number of mermaid stories are focused on harvesting them for their body parts and/or extorting them for wishes under threat of killing and eating them. They are one of the big monsters in mythology that's as much a commodity as a creature.
...well, this bad guy looks rad as hell!
Speaking of cover stories, it seems we're getting one for CP9. Hmm... I'm not sure if I can find sympathy for them, but then again, the cover story for Baroque Works did make me love those kooky assassins, so maybe Oda can work the same miracle twice.
You'd think after Thriller Bark they'd learn not to sail into islands/ships/island ships that are shaped like a giant gaping maw, and yet here we are.
Ok, yes, the Arlong Pirates were definitely the first threat the gang faced that had real emotional weight to it, so I can understand why they're all so resistant to helping one of said pirates out.
But Hatchi was pretty chill and incompetent as far as that group went, and besides that...
Do you really have the heart to make this sweet mermaid cry like this?
Thank god Nami has my back.
...did Spandam blame CP9 for the buster call?
Ha, what a dick!
Almost 500 chapters in an the women are still allowed to accomplish things! That's the extremely low bar that almost none of One Piece's peers can manage to surmount.
Holy shit, the build up to this fucking punchline...
Ok, so, we've got a masked man with a grudge against the Straw Hats. Who is he? Why does he want to kill Sanji specifically? Well...
Luffy unmasks him, and we see everyone's reactions.
(shoutout to Robin's incredibly understated "Oh.")
Sanji is particularly horrified by what he sees and what we haven't had revealed to us yet. Who could it be? Don Krieg, maybe?
But no, it's no one we've met before. Instead it's a poor bastard who happens to resemble the horrible police sketch of Sanji that's being used on all his wanted posters.
I cannot BELIEVE how long Oda has been setting up this fucking joke. The patience, the careful seeding, absolutely perfect comedy.
Especially when it's followed by Sanji just beating the guy's ass without a second thought.
Duval is quickly becoming the funniest moron in this entire manga.
Ok, Franky officially made the coolest fucking pirate ship of all time.
Honestly, this is probably the happiest Sanji has ever been in his life.
I think Shanks would be proud of Luffy for handling this monster this way. Or maybe jealous since Luffy didn't lose an arm in the process like he did.
Pfft, they'll be fine. I have it on good authority that medical care outside of the US only costs, like, two buttons and a yucky penny.
Awwww!
...wait, so Sanji rearranging Wanze's face (you know, the ramen guy who was too sexy for tumblr's censorship algorithms) wasn't just a one off gag, but, like, a legitimate superpower he has? He can just kick people into facial reconstructive surgery?
So I'm guessing this would be called the Sabaody Archipelago arc? Unless this whole bit with Duval was just a mini arc before Fishman Island proper, sorta like how Foxy's arc was kinda just a tiny side story between Skypeia and Water 7?
I fucking loved the ridiculous fantasy bullshit they used to get to Skypeia, so you can imagine how much I'm digging the solution to the problem of Fishman Island being 30,000 feet under the sea!
I love how this island keeps finding new ways for an island to be fucked up and weird, and how it often draws that weirdness from real life things that it just exaggerates to the extreme.
Hatchi is a good octopus man, and I look forward to seeing him win his lawsuit against Rick Sanchez for stealing his hair.
Well maybe we're happier that way, Usopp, did you ever think of that?
So Zoro's definitely going to get lost.
And Luffy is definitely going to punch a noble.
Robin's wearing another cowboy hat! : )
I love this world so much
I mean, I'd like to know. I want to see an island full of mermaids and fish people. I bet it's cool!
A mermaid princess? Oh my... if I weren't already married to Robin...
First: I like that Robin guesses Cami's sudden shyness is a trauma response. I don't know how accurate that guess is, but it says something about Robin that her default assumption when someone is being withdrawn isn't to judge them, but to treat them with compassion rooted in her own sad life story.
Second: I love her beautiful nose.
Oh shit, a background extra just got Battle Royal'ed!
So Spandam really wasn't an outlier as far as leadership of the world Government goes, huh?
IT'S NEPOTISM ALL THE WAY DOWN!
...it's honestly kind of funny how for years I avoided this manga because of how it draws women, but now I've gotten pulled so deep into it that there are multiple characters in it I'm crushing on.
Anyway, if I wasn't already married to Robin...
Mmm, that's good fanfiction fuel.
Ooo, shit, at least some of those are famous real world pirate names!
I feel like she'd do numbers on here.
...the idea that this entire manga is one long tournament arc is kind of blowing my mind.
The face of a man who is so, so happy that his one and only chance at getting devil fruit powers ended up making him a were-giraffe.
There could not be a more vain and fruitless piece of advice to give these heroes.
I would kill for Camie's happiness actually
Luffy, I enjoyed Thriller Bark too, but we can't just repeat the same arc over and over!
This may have set a new record for how much a single panel can make me hate a character upon their introduction.
Ah, an establishment democrat I see.
(a republican wouldn't even ask the question)
God, I love Zoro
Ok, so Jewelry Bonney is kind of like Chopper in that she can shift from a child form to an adult form, is that it?
Also kudos to her for saving Zoro's life.
I mean, they've been doing it for almost 500 chapters now, you really shouldn't be surprised.
Oh no, Camie's been kidnapped! Again!
So it's a good thing Sanji made friends with the gang that tried to kidnap her last time, I guess?
I kind of love this loser
I feel like a lot of important shit happened 200 years ago in this story, and at this point it might well all be connected.
That's it, that's the manga in a nutshell.
Well, a horrible context to get it, but it's fun to have a list of all(?) of the species of people in One Piece. I wanna see the snakenecks!
Oh fuck, this is escalating quickly. I think I should call it here for the night or I'll end up staying up too late.
I recomend going for one more chapter, the end of it is a fantastic stopping place

The common parlance in the fandom is to name Arcs after the location the Strawhats visit, which I think is also the official.
Ironically I think Foxy is the only major arc that bucks the trend, being most often refered to as the Davy Back Fight arc as opposed to the official name of the Longring Longland arc.
Which does occasionally lead to some weirdness, like the bit after enies lobby where they go back to Water 7 getting called the "Post Enies Lobby arc"

This arc has a lot of callbacks in it. One of which has become legendary in the fandom, though it's not for a bit yet

The moment you made that post about how his helmeted design looked cool, I had that "Tom from Tom & Jrry laughs maniacally" gif playing in my head.
Years ago, back before it got bought by the muskrat, there was a guy on Twitter named Grant the Thief who was doing a thread going through One Piee chapter by Chapter, doing a bit of analysis and highlighting art. He spoke very highly of Duval's presentation in the lead up to this, and had a hilarious response when the reveal dropped

Nami is also the reason the others have a low opinion of the Arlong Pirates. So having her give the go ahead is good
Chapter 159: A Missing Black Belt
We sat at the dinner table. I feared I wouldn't even be able to eat with the pungent smell. I was about to close off that sense with a technique when it was revealed Anne and I would be sitting clear on the other side of the table from the guys. I knew they were seating us like that to exclude us, but being further away from the smell meant I wouldn't vomit up anything I ate.
I was just reaching for the food when the eleventh member of the guys arrived. Apparently he broke from the party earlier to do something.
"I'm here." He said feigning apathy, as if he was trying to shrug off being late.
But as he passed by Sigma, the patriarch suddenly swiveled around in his seat and caught him by the wrist. "Hold up, Gary."
"Huh? What's w-wrong Patriarch?" He was suddenly sweating bullets, as if he was caught red handed.
The Patriarch gave the man a sniff, which only made him sweat more. Sigma spoke with so much venom in his voice. "Did you wipe your ass?"
"N-No, of course not..."
He squinted at the man who only shrunk down more at his gaze. "You did. You smell clean. Like a woman."
The man was quaking like crazy. "I-I don't like the feeling... of it not being clean..."
"I TOLD YOU SO MANY TIMES, WIPING YOUR ASS IS GAY!"
"Please, I just didn't like-"
"Are you gay, Gary?"
"N-no!"
Suddenly, he glanced down at the man's hands. "What?! Did you wash your hands, too?!?"
"W-We were going to eat dinner!"
"That's it!" He jabbed a finger in our direction. "Go sit with the women."
"No! Wait no! Anything but that! Patriarch Sigma, please don't-"
"SIT WITH THE REST OF THE WOMEN, YOU FA-" He turned his head towards us briefly. "You vagina'd person you!"
Defeated, the man named Gary visibly slumped as he sulked the entire way to our side of the table. I had unfortunately learned what that smell was, and yeah, I'm worse off knowing that. Now loaded with the knowledge that they didn't even wash their hands, I watched them pick up food and start munching away. What little of my appetite perished in that moment. My poor slice of meat lover's pizza sat untouched on my plate.
The Patriarch noticed my reaction and seemed very satisfied by it. "I keep a tight ship." Sigma resounded smugly as he took a bite.
"Speaking of which," I'd welcome any distraction from my nauseated stomach, "I noticed you have three stripes on your belt."
His brow furrowed. "Yeah? And?"
"Well, you only gain the second stripe when you reach 100 members, and the third when you train up a master. But I only see 11 here and no one is a black belt."
"Oh, we have to trim off the fat, often." He said as he ripped the gristle off his steak with his bare hands. "Can't have weakness, isn't that right?" He gave Gary a glare and the guy cowers in the seat next to me. "As for our black belts, they are off doing their own thing."
If their black belts are the same height as the rest of the main group, they can't really be seen in public. Is this another lie? I couldn't help wondering if they were lying in wait for the inevitable betrayal.
"So, what do you two watch?" Sigma started. He said it to spark small talk, but the apathy in his voice revealed ulterior motives.
Anne responded with no clue of the trap she was walking into. "I've been watching god dramas with my fiance of late."
The Patriarch scoffed. "You watch that girly shit? Typical women, watching literal garbage."
I rolled my eyes. "Was there ever a correct answer to that question in your eyes?"
He swiveled his blindfolded gaze towards me. "Excuse me, I watch the correct programming. The manly shows! Like Rocket Gun Machine Sports, Trucker Psycho, and Chef Whoop Ass!"
I perked up at the last one. "Oh, you watch Chef Whop Ass? I've been watching that with Coozin." We haven't been able to binge watch as much as we used to considering we have to wait for Belovi to fall asleep. That show is definitely not for kids.
He blinked. "I mean, you're not watch watching it right?"
"Huh?"
"Like, you're on your phone while it's playing right? You don't actually watch it?"
"No, we've been watching every episode properly." Lately, we've been mostly mocking it. The later episodes are SO BAD!
He chortled. "Heh, I knew you were just fake watching. You're not going to impress us so easily."
His statement completely contradicted what I just said. Was he not listening to me? Well, I couldn't take much more of this and excused myself. "I'm going to the bathroom." This was a lie and they knew it, but if they could blatantly fabricate the truth, I can too. I left the dining area and started snooping around. Funnily enough, I did find the bathroom and kinda regretted looking in there. I will mercifully spare you the description, this chapter is gross enough.
I headed down the hallway, re-entering the main foyer we passed when we were led through here. I can see patched up holes in the walls from the men’s abuse of the mansion. I noticed something mounted nearby, something I didn't look too deeply at the first time. There was a digital placard displaying the "Wolf Pack Leaderboards." Only twelve names were listed with their belts displayed next to them. Poor Gary was at the dead bottom of the list.
Though, there was something of interest on the top. Underneath Sigma was a black belt named Shinobi. Kind of a stereotypical name but whatever. Still, if this leaderboard is to be believed, outside Sigma they only have one active black belt in the group. Were they planning to take us out with just two masters of the art? Where did they get the bravado from? Were they all just fools? I might have greatly overestimated my opponents if that were the case.
No, I couldn't assume anything. They could have planted this leaderboard to throw me off.
I swiped a finger on the device and suddenly, it switched over to a status screen. It displayed a list of all the members and their locations, as in all of them former and otherwise. The list includes exactly 100 names in all. About half of that was in the mansion currently. Mostly some white, blue, and brown belts, all either have feminine or demeaning names.
"So there are 38 unaccounted for minutians in the grounds with us." I rubbed my chin in thought. "But where are they?"
This was a good sized mansion, but not so much that 38 people could just vanish without a trace. They must be hiding somewhere, but where? I'll need to search around later, there must be a secret passage or something.
I scrolled through the list. I saw Smalls' name on there. It says "Sanctuary" next to his name. They can just keep track of the whereabouts of even their former members? That's a disturbing thought. I found Shinobi and, go figure, his location says [REDACTED.]
I kept scrolling through and something caught my eye. One name was in entirely uppercase letters: SECRET WEAPON. Seriously, it just says secret weapon. I checked where it was and it said 'Monster Kingdom Castle.'
Okay, the Wolf Pack is most likely working with Faceless, and it would make complete sense that they would. Also apparently they made a secret weapon of some sorts? That's kinda concerning.
Also, I can't believe all this information was from A GIANT FUCKING PAD DEVICE MOUNTED ON THE WALL IN THE MAIN FOYER! Either this is some pretty elaborate planted evidence, or they are the biggest idiots ever. Well, for now, I'm going to only take what I read with a grain of salt and make my way to the dining room.
Only to find that all the men are arguing with Anne.
"What do you MEAN you wear make-up?!?" Shouted Sigma.
"I just wear it on dates. Leave me the fuck alone."
He tilted his head like he was rolling his eyes. "Didn't think you were THAT kind of girl."
"Well, pleasure to disappoint."

one of those days where I'm thinking with awe about the whole AquRuby truther movement from when the manga was running again. no matter how long it's been, remembering that there was a period of time when the unironic position held by some of the loudest people in the fandom was "this extremely mainstream manga is definitely going to end with the protagonist hooking up with his blood related twin sister as epic destined soulmates" and they were so confident in this prediction that they gave you the exact chapter they thought it would happen and the exact sequence of events it would follow and when you asked for evidence they would give you a list of things that weren't actually in the manga and call you a slur hits like a truck

500¥ says that part of why they were so confident Canon Incest was Endgame, is the common perception that Japan is an exotic/degenerate land of perverts. That anime and manga are innately more perverse/taboo-pushing/whatever than Western animation and comics.
Japanese media is full of pedophilia and rape and incest and even gay people, so they say. So anything is possible. Discard your civilized European notions of what is permissible in mainstream pop culture, and assume you already know what's permissible to barbaric Asians.
I never much interacted with the Oshi No Ko shipping community, so I can't speak to how things went there. But the idea that a manga being mainstream precludes it from doing an incest pairing doesn't really hold water.
Just a couple months ago Street fighter 6 six, the latest installment of a culturally ubiqutous franchise, which is currently doing phenomenally well, added a character whose story mode was about his romance with his adopted sister/Cousin.
And just a decade-ish ago Game of thrones was culturally ubiquitous in America, with an incestuous couple core to the narrative from the start, and a second one being added late in the game.
I'm going to be blunt without wanting to be unkind or pick a fight: not only are these just kind of bad comparisons to make but more broadly, this post is a gold star example of exactly what GWG outlined in her post - using niche and/or subculture-targeted media as a frame of reference to paint Japanese culture as a whole as being especially permissive or even celebratory of taboo subject matter - in this case, incest. It's true that Japan has different standards for what counts as incest and differing laws and standards with regards to it, but it is not an uncontroversially celebrated aspect of daily life or even mainstream pop culture.
I deliberately included American Made Media in order to avoid that issue.
Okay, well. This is a discussion specifically about orientalism in fandom and xenophobic assumptions people make about Japan as a result of their shallow, surface level engagement with niche pop culture. So I'm not sure what you imagine you're contributing here.
I'm pointing out that your argument is rooted in a fallacy.
You're presenting it as a given that a mainstream peice of media would never go choose to have an incestuous romance. And that the only reason to consider that it might happen is xenophobic atitudes towards Japan.
Unfortunately, this isn't really a discussion we can have without looking at the wider mainstream popularity of Oshi No Ko, specifically in its home country, overseas. Bringing up an American-made piece of media to compare that to the culture surrounding Oshi No Ko isn't really doing much, especially since Game of Thrones specifically uses incest as a narrative tool within its grimdark genre, whereas Oshi No Ko is a different genre completely.
In this way, the assumption of incest being the endgame does tend to come from internalized orientalism, the idea that it's 'not so taboo over there to bone your full-blood twin sister' being an idea that many white weeaboos tend to see as perfectly normal.
And that the only reason to consider that it might happen is xenophobic attitudes towards Japan.
Oshi No Ko has a novelization aimed towards kids, has a project introducing people to every prefecture of Japan, and other such projects representing day to day life. You don't see Game Of Thrones videos about "Welcome to Wisconsin" or whatever because it's not a media aimed at all ages and despite its mainstream appeal, it is still incredibly scrutinized and controversial in and of itself. Oshi No Ko's popularity is, for lack of a better word, more clean. It has an image to uphold that is incredibly different from Game of Thrones.
So all in all, yes, there is something to be said about "why would you, an American, assume this show from Japan, will have incest as its end goal relationship when it could lose so much public goodwill by doing so? Would you think the same for an American cartoon with the same plot and popularity?"
The context matters, both socially between the consumer and the origin of the consumed product, and within the media itself.
If an American Show made it a plot point that a guy's sister was attracted to him and interested in being in a relationship with them, then yes, I would treat it as a valid possibility that the show might end up with an incestuous pairing.
While Ruby does get more openly affectionate, it seems like it was narratively just a comedy bit and to mend the rift between the siblings that was caused. She never asks him out or even textually shows interest in a relationship with him, even if she does get clingy for a few chapters, no? I don't think that's necessarily enough to go, "this is a possibility" and not just "oh ruby still has lingering feelings about Goro specifically" especially while Aqua makes it very clear he is not interested in Ruby in the same way despite putting up with it in the least reciprocal way possible.
I hope this makes sense, it's 2 am for me rn.
Didn't she kiss him? My memory is not that good but I'm pretty sure that happened
(And it's two AM for me too)

That's because it is mostly a given that a mainstream piece of media, especially one that exploded in popularity to the level Oshi no Ko did wouldn't choose to have actual requited twincest in its official run. Both of the examples you have given were infact deeply controversial (Both Game of Thrones and House of Dragons faced scrutiny for it) with the game's director for Street Fighter 6 also actually issuing an apology!
And apart from that, incest very much is still a cultural taboo in Japan— the point Claire was making is that the very assumption that OnK would absolutely no doubt about it have an incest pairing and that somehow it's position as an insanely popular property in Japan would have no bearing on what sort of romance AkaMengo decide to include is part of the general western/specifically weeb assumption of anime as "a perverted media from a land of perverts" as a whole thats deeply pervasive when discussing the orientalism that very much exists in Western spheres.
If it were Taboo in enough that having a Twincest ending was never in the cards, then it would taboo enough that they wouldn't be willing to tease a Twincest ending in the first place.
That's not the case. Ruby was unknowingly crushing on her brother for a while, and learning that her crush was her brother didn't stop her. Once that haooens, then it's entirely valid to think that it might actually happen. Because if their were no chance of it happening, the Manga put the chance there in the first place.
It's....kind of not though? I'm saying this as someone who was reading the manga from Dig Deep arc onwards and was present for literally every community shipping drama and update. Oshi no Ko never once hinted towards going in an incestuous direction before the 20-something nothingburger chapters Akasaka baits the shippers with them and while you can argue discussion of it was inevitable due to the nature of reincarnation and Sarina's crush coming into play, the writing itself was devolving into character assassination and incredibly plot holey at the time.
Especially since actual textual evidence for it being reciprocated was zero. Aqua was uncomfortable and never once showed any interest in Ruby and Ruby herself was treated like a joke. Again, thats the point Claire was making— the writing was utterly nonsensical and borderline a joke and any evidence was completely made up from official arts that was unrelated, not to mention the sheer amount of misinformation that AqRb shippers kept spreading such as purposely mistranslating the actual japanese text and not listening to the real translators who said otherwise, making up things about Shinto mythology and in general also throwing slurs around.
So to believe that OnK would actually possibly commit to it especially when the anime property is very very popular in Japan and risking losing all that goodwill is actually weird and nonsensical.
Okay, my memory is not the greatest, but as I recall, Ruby literally kissed Aqua. You can't say the series never hinted towards incest when there is literally an incestuous kiss in it. And yeah, the writing did turn to crap at the end. That's not really a reason to think the incest is less likely to happen. At best that's just a neutral factor.

Seeing Bluejam unaffected by conquerors haki made me think of this question - do you think any of the East Blue villains could resist Luffy's current conquerors haki?
maybe Arlong, but I suppose Krieg lived and made it to the New World so he has potential too.
I have to imagine Buggy can stay standing too
