Genesis, day 1 of being in Midgar: “Look at this place, the culture is enriching! The theatre district alone! Three dedicated playhouses within walking distance, a gallery quarter, a live music hall that apparently runs until 0300. I’ve already sourced two first-edition texts I couldn’t find in Banora in six years of looking. The architecture is extraordinary if you engage with it philosophically rather than literally. The scale of human ambition compressed into one city. I think I understand now why people come here. I think this is my home.” 

Genesis, day 30 of being in Midgar: “I am. Losing. My. MIND. The mess hall has been serving POWDERED fruit juice for two weeks. My skin is suffering visibly from the lack of fresh air. I haven’t seen a fresh vegetable in two weeks, and apparently having grown up near agriculture makes you a country hick here. And! I saw a rat in Sector 7 yesterday that was larger than a housecat!”

Genesis, after Angeal said I told you so and suggests they move back home: “Perish the thought! I’ve decided I’m fond of the giant rats. I may attempt to domesticate one, actually. ”

Angeal, day 1 of being in Midgar: “I mean…this place is great and all, but it’s not better than Banora. There are no plants, no birdsong, no insects because the environment can’t support life. I miss my mom, I miss the orchards, the beach, and the only reason I stay is because it would be dishonorable to leave. And I need the money.”

*Zack has Angeal’s arm over his shoulder, helping him walk*

Angeal: This is entirely your fault. If you had just thought for one second before you acted, my foot would be fine right now.

Zack: I know, I know, I’m so sorry! How many times do I have to apologize?

Angeal: You don’t. What I want from you is growth. Humility. The basic consideration of thinking about how your actions affect the people around you before you act.

Zack: You’re completely right! Starting right now, that’s exactly what I'm doing. New Zack. Thoughtful Zack. Zack who considers others’ feelings. 

*A man sprints past and swipes Angeal’s wallet*

Angeal: HEY! Ow, my foot! Zack, run after him!

Zack: Hm. But what if he needs the money? 

Angeal: ZACK!

Zack: We earn so well at SOLDIER. Not everyone has the privilege of a wallet full of gil and a coupon collection.

Angeal, turning blue: ZACK—

Zack: Look at him run! He looks free! Light on his feet, even. Whatever that money goes toward, I have to believe it’s making a difference in someone’s life and that’s beautiful. You’re helping the needy!

Angeal: I’M GOING TO PASS OUT.

Zack: Oh! He’s meeting someone under the bridge! Look, he’s buying rock candy!
