Episode 408 is called Tad & Loreen & Avi & Shanaz. 

The title of this episode is a play on Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, which is one of my favorite classic films. We liked the idea that this was this little, like, 70s character piece about adults and the complications of marriage, tucked into this show about 20-somethings. 

The big reveal of Tad’s sexuality lives somewhere between a premeditated thing and something that has come to us as the characters progressed. It was something that we planted in that first scene with Hannah and Elijah in Season One.

He’s always thought her father seemed gay. Hannah’s feelings were, “Well, if he were gay, he’d be trying harder to cover it up.” Apparently that’s not the case. 

In the context of Loreen and Tad’s relationship, it makes sense. There’s such a power imbalance. He’s so deferential to her. So much of that was because there was something big that he felt really guilty about.

I think a big part of being in your 20s is realizing that your parents are people, and that they’re not just in the world to serve you. Realizing that your parents have their own issues and their own anxieties— it can be traumatic, because you still feel like a child. You don’t feel ready for it.
