Jason Todd was the son of Joseph and Trina Todd, star acrobats of the Hill Circus.* When Killer Croc (see Croc) extorted the circus for "protection money", Batman (see Batman II) investigated the situation and was wounded in the process.
Trina accidentally discovered Batman's identity while a guest at Wayne Manor. She and her husband offered their aid in capturing Croc, ending his threat to the circus. Batman reluctantly agreed and the duo joined the Caped Crusader and Robin (see Nightwing) on the case.
Catastrophe soon followed when the Todds gave their lives in the battle against Croc at the Gotham Zoo Reptile House. Their young son, Jason, upon seeing their bodies, told Batman he wanted to avenge them.
In recent times, Batman was encouraged by Robin to open himself up to the needs of people, so he agreed to take Jason in as his new ward. Shorty thereafter, Robin became Nightwing and turned the mantle of Boy Wonder over to Jason. Jason has trained extensively with Batman but still grieves for his parents. For a time he saw Nocturna (see Nocturna) as a mother figure, but with her apparently dead, Jason has accepted Bruce Wayne as his true parent.
When not working with the Darknight Detective, Jason is a student at junior high school and trains in the ways of a detective. Only recently has Jason begun to participate in cases involving other superheroes.
Robin possesses no special powers, but is a first-class athlete, having been trained by his parents. He is a good hand-to-hand combatant and is constantly learning under the Batman's tutelage.
His reasoning and detective skills are weak and are being concentrated upon, but he shows extreme promise.
*Note, it was the Sloan Circus, not Hill. Waldo the clown and Dick Grayson have been in both Hill and Sloan at some point, as well as Cleveland Brand being mentioned in BATMAN #357 are probably contributors to this error

When Dick Grayson, the original Robin, was wounded and almost killed by The Joker, the Batman swore he would never work with another young partner again (see Nightwing, Joker, Batman revised). The relationship between Batman and his partner had strained as both discovered that their life goals were quite different.
For several months, the Caped Crusader kept this vow, until the night he returned to Crime Alley, the street upon which his parents had been murdered many years before, for his annual vigil. Returning to his Batmobile (see Bat Equipment), Batman discovered that someone had stolen its tires. Appreciating the nerve of the thief, the Batman waited for him to return to finish the crime, and was surprised to find that the culprit was a young boy.
The Caped Crusader followed the felon back to his tenement home, to discover the youngster lived alone. Under questioning, the boy, Jason Todd, admitted that he had lived there, taking care of his ailing mother, until she had passed away. He did not know his father's whereabouts, but presumed he was doing time in prison.
Rather than turn Jason over to the authorities, the Batman enrolled him in Ma Gunn's School for Boys, a local facility that also served as a shelter for runaways (see Fay Gunn). Unfortunately, the Dark Knight soon learned that Ma Gunn was actually running a crime school, and with Jason's help, he brought Gunn and her young henchmen to justice.
As a result, Batman rescinded his vow, and offered Jason the opportunity to live with him and become the new Robin. Jason readily agreed. It should also be noted that the Batman's choice was made in recognition of the void in his life created by Grayson's moving out of Wayne Manor and finding his destiny among the Teen Titans (see Teen Titans).
After six months of extensive training, the Batman, with Grayson's consent, awarded Jason his Robin costume, and the Dynamic Duo was reborn.
Several months later, Jason discovered that his father was dead, slain by his former employer, Two-Face (see Two-Face). With Batman's help, the new Robin defeated and captured Two-Face and returned him to Arkham Asylum (see Arkham Asylum).
Since then, Todd has accepted his new role in life with great joy and has been readily accepted by those surrounding Batman, including his butler Alfred and Commissioner Gordon (see Commissioner Gordon, Outsider). Todd has performed so well with the Batman that he has been invited to work alongside the Titans from time to time.
An above-average athlete and acrobat, Robin is also adept at various forms of martial arts. His training is ongoing and his skills improve regularly. He can handle himself in hand-to-hand combat and has also developed keen deductive skills.
The blouse of his costume is flexible body armor, moderately bulletproof, and he wears a utility belt equipped with a Batarang and various other crimefighting weapons.

Months after his crimefighting partnership with the original Robin ended, the Batman visited Crime Alley, the street where his parents had been murdered many years before (see Batman, Robin I). While he was there, a boy named Jason Todd stole the Batmobile's tires. Batman soon confronted Todd and learned that he lived alone in a tenement, where he had taken care of Catherine Todd, the woman he believed to be his mother, until she had passed away due to illness. Eventually, Todd learned that his father had been killed by his former employer, the criminal Two-Face (see Two-Face). With Batman's help, the new Robin defeated and captured him.
The new Robin performed very effectively as the Batman's partner, and also worked occasionally as a member of the Teen Titans.
But Jason became increasingly rebellious and began taking unreasonable risks in action. He may even have been responsible for killing Felipe Garzonas, an ambassador's son who had used diplomatic immunity to escape punishment for beating a young woman.
Upon learning that Catherine Todd was actually his stepmother, Jason set out to find his real mother--Dr. Sheila Haywood, whom Wayne and Todd found in Ethiopia. Todd discovered she was being blackmailed by the Joker. Revealing his Robin identity to her, Todd offered to help Haywood, but she turned him over to the Joker, fearing that a police investigation would expose her as an embezzler. The Joker beat Robin severely, tied Haywood up, and Ieft them both locked in a warehouse with a bomb set to explode. Jason heroically threw himself in front of Haywood to try to protect her from the explosion, but it killed them both.
The second Robin was an above average athlete and acrobat. He was a formidable hand-to-hand combatant. Under Batman's tutelage he developed keen detective skills.
Robin wore a utility belt equipped with a Batarang and other crimefighting weapons and equipment
