Starting the code
I got the content all marked up and started with the basic CSS.Â
The designs that didn’t make the cut
Feedback session
After out initial feedback, the one thing that was brought up the most was that the body copy was too small, so I changed it to be easier to read.Â

A first glance into the motive app - a very simple prototype showcasing the initial look and feel of the app.

Things to consider
Another thing my lecturer brought up, was the idea of how to avoid a clustered look in an app that is basically a library of slide decks. If every slide deck has a completely different look and feel, the app will look clustered, even if the initial app layout was nice.Â
A thing to consider in this case would be having a few template designs prepared and only allow those, something like canva.com. But then again this raises questions about creative freedom and if all the slide decks will have to be built in the app itself rather than being uploaded.Â
How do people learn & bite sized learning
Since this is an educational app, I also tried to research how people actually learn. Having talked about it with my lecturer before anyway, it does fit in this project as well.Â
This short article gives a good starting point view to how people learn:
Construction.
Cognition.
Community.
You need to be building things to learn, get feedback on them and reflect on that feedback, as well as have other people to talk to about it.
I also had a look into a few Learning Management Systems (LMS). Also keeping in mind that there are different aspects to consider if the LMS is supposed to be successful.
Another thing that was brought up was the idea of bite-sized learning. For example what booklets.io is doing. It’s putting together the key takeaways from a book or a presentation and summarising them in a set of short slides.Â
The Look
I wanted motive to be useful but also look delightful. As we all know, Blackboard doesn’t have the nicest display.Â
I wanted the app too feel modern and fresh, so I settled on a simple colour palette: off-white, off-black and yellow, +secondary colour: teal.
I tried a few styles before I settled on neuomorphism, aka Soft UI.
I only use neuomorphism to break up the white background a bit, and it allows me to use the hexagon pattern without looking heavy.Â
Here’s a short article on neuomorphism. It is one of 2020s UI trends so it was fun to try it out in my project. https://uxdesign.cc/neumorphism-in-user-interfaces-b47cef3bf3a6Â

Inspo
I was looking at various apps and websites, to see how different elements look like that could help me figure out my layout.Â
I was mainly looking into navigations and menu layouts, as well as what’s included in upload windows. So besides the main inspirations, like Notist, Fantastical and Slack, I was also looking into Dribbble, Behance, the Apple Photos app, keynote, etc.
What is Motive?
For now just an MVP combining the 3 key factors that make it a good starting point for an education app. Sharing content, allowing better communication between lecturers and students and further developing ideas together.
Motive isn’t re-inventing the wheel, it’s just combining 3 existing workspace apps into one.Â
Easily upload slide decks, wether they are lectures or student’s projects. Every slide deck has its own set of tags, so they are easily searchable.
The calendar allows to keep track of important deadlines and hand-in dates as well as let’s lecturers suggest meeting dates for feedback sessions.
Communication is really important in education, so Motive has a private message and group chat option.
