Which. In addition to the different stakes of each situation . . . Do y’all not know how character development works?

I don’t go here, so please correct me if I’m wrong, but I find it pretty ironic that Euphoria started off as a show about a group of primarily teenage girls navigating their emotions and traumas in relation to the patriarchy . . . And seemingly just ended with two guys in their fifties having it out in a revenge-fueled strip club fight.

I’m having another #hatermoment but it is very bizarre how some fr*ity four fans seem to genuinely believe that Nancy has more loyalty to Eddie, a guy she knew for 4 days and who promptly died than to Jonathan, her long term boyfriend who she loves deeply. Like say what ever you want about s4 Steve and Robin, they don’t care about Jonathan, but NANCY????

I do not believe she would shoot someone for “replacing” Eddie with Jonathan…

#it’s so absurd #and so many of them complain that the rooftop scene would have only worked if eddie was replaced with jonathan #eddie barely knew robin #his ‘friendship’ with nancy comprised of him trying to shut down every single one of her plans and begging her to get him a beer #and he and steve were only really starting to connect because of dustin before eddie went and got himself killed #(screwing up their trip back home in the process)#the idea that they all had some great bond and connection with him compared to jonathan is downright bonkers #joseph quinn is charismatic in the role but from essentially every other standpoint the levels of fan devotion towards him utterly baffle m #stranger things

I’ve been thinking about Season 4 again (much to my chagrin), and the thing that’s always bugged me about Eddie is that he just feels so transparent as a character.

Bob’s role I could understand; he felt naturally embedded into Hawkins and its characters. Alexei was a trope from the start, but I can see the logic of wanting to portray a likable Russian character that won’t stay around for the long-run. It was predictable, but it still made sense.

With Eddie, however, I immediately clocked exactly what the writers were doing and I hated it. A new, prominent high-schooler that’s close to Dustin, makes sarcastic comments, and is misunderstood, poor, and massively into music? The levels of character redundancy are off-the-charts. And when you combine that with a low-effort ‘character arc’ that also feels rinse-and-repeat, the blatancy of it all is practically dripping off the screen.

There is just such a cynical undercurrent to his character and it’s always bothered me. He feels less like a person and more like a crafted group of archetypes, and in a show that always prided itself on honesty and the warmth of humanity, he sticks out like a sore thumb.

God, I love Nancy. She’s so fierce but she has a shortsighted nature. I love that she’s flawed and hurting and is allowed to feel that pain. I love the scene where she’s fawning over the dog. I love that she’s allowed to falter while simultaneously being one of the most competent in the room. I love her commitment to the bit, her understated sense of humor. And I adore how empathetic she is, no matter how much she may try to shove that down. She’s a lovely character and I know the show’s been over for a while but I MISS HER, DAMN IT!
