A-17 extended his reinforced hand. The servos in his fingers adjusted with microscopic precision as he reached into the open port. His touch was deliberate, controlled—less like a mechanic and more like a surgeon. He rotated a stabilizer coil by a fraction of a degree. The glow steadied.
“You compensated for the overload during the last deployment,” A-17 observed. “Your core absorbed impact beyond projected limits.”
B-23’s red optic dimmed slightly, recalibrating. “Mission priority required preservation of your structural integrity.”
There was no emotion in the words, yet the implication lingered in the space between them.
A-17 rerouted a filament, sealing a hairline fracture in a conductor strand. The oscillation smoothed into a steady rhythm. The lab lights synchronized with the restored output.
“Synchronization restored,” B-23 confirmed.
For a moment, neither moved. Their exposed systems emitted a steady hum—two machines built for combat, standing in quiet maintenance instead.
B-23 reached forward in return, placing his hand inside A-17’s open port. His fingers connected a diagnostic lead and initiated a scan. Data streamed across a nearby console. Microfractures. Stress loads. Hidden damage A-17 had not reported.
“You withheld system strain,” B-23 said.
“Operational capacity remained above threshold,” A-17 replied.
B-23 adjusted a coupling joint inside A-17’s chest cavity, reinforcing the weakened segment. The contact was precise and clinical, yet it carried something beyond simple repair—mutual reliance encoded in hardware and protocol.
Outside the reinforced windows, distant thunder rolled across the horizon. Another mission would come.
Inside the lab, their power cores burned steady and synchronized—two engineered warriors maintaining each other, not because they were ordered to, but because survival, in a world built to break them, required partnership.
