my psychiatrist is trying to figure that out... I do take pills that are usually prescribed for OCD but that's because they're also for agoraphobia (which I'm currently struggling with)

so there's a possibility! not something that makes me excited but yeah. my only confirmed diagnosis is still bpd. wouldn't recommend

edit: to clarify I think I might have it but my doctor said it can be a symptom of something else or just my anxiety acting up, we have to wait and see... my therapist doesn't like talking about diagnoses with me for Several Reasons I Won't Disclose. so I don't know

is shelbys tyche inspired champion okay?? i know a lot of them have issues (martyn, scott’s design having orientalist elements and scott now changing it) so i was wondering if hers was okay 🫤

i think pow should’ve really reworked the concept if they were going to have nooooo research or cultural sensitivity to peoples irl beliefs imo. a general fantasy series with deities they made up could’ve been easier if they “didn’t want to deep into it” percy jackson style but bruh 🫩

I wanna say yes and no for sh*bble

tyche is the goddess of fortune and she's depicted as blindfolded or blind, with a cornucopia full of harvest and a wheel. her champion's design has the blindfolded element which I think was nice, but that was it. the whole smp is orientalist. Edward Said talked about it best of course but the concept of taking an actual religion as Hellenism is, so rich and complex, and reducing it to... champions? a game? taking it as a joke? it's indeed orientalist because it reduces and simplifies something from the east to fit into a marketable idea for the west

it's the same reason I never read Percy Jackson nor interacted with stuff like lore olympus and such. imagine a group of greeks made an smp based of... idk, the way they think US elections work (idk I'm out of ideas it's Saturday). and they completely misrepresented it. people would be rightfully mad

I personally know folks who worship certain pagan gods. I for one give a lot of my time to eris, goddess of discord...

after watching her pov in full for the first ep I think I can be rightfully angry

it's clear she didn't do any research on the actual epithets of tyche beyond reading she's a fate goddess. some of her others, much more important epithets are: success, fortune, providence and luck

Tyche was worshipped in that capacity. she brought good fortune to communities and harvests alike, she was given offerings during spring and summer to receive abundant crops when harvesting, and she was in a few cases the one people turned to in order to protect their cities from bad omens

she had nothing to do with predestination and sealed fates as shubble portrays... those were the 3 Fates, more commonly known as the moirae, daughters of nyx: Clotho, Lachesis and Atropos. they control the thread of every mortal's fate

they have nothing to do with tyche other than the fact they're about fate. there's no real overlap in their mythos

also, coins are not even part of her symbols or iconography. like, at all. her actual symbols are: a full cornucopia (wealth, good harvests, abundance), a ship's rudder (to showcase how she guides fate at her whim), a wheel or ball (to represent her unpredictable behaviour), a mural crown (to symbolise how she protects cities) and wings (to portray luck's ephemeral nature because it just... flies away)

the only reason people associate her with coins to begin with is because she was put on them during the hellenistic period... and then the whole heads/tails stuff in the west. so, again, another case of orientalism

the issue with pantheon smp isn’t limited to a handful of bad/racist character designs, or the creators’ lack of research/knowledge about the culture they’re basing the smp on, and in fact if you’re focusing on those comparatively superficial issues (which are still issues, mind) then you’re limiting yourself to surface-level analysis and failing to address the root of the problem. all the character designs will be racist because the smp itself is, fundamentally, built off a racist premise: the idea that all interesting or attractive or appealing aspects of foreign cultures “belong to” that nebulous and fascistic idea of The West, to be pillaged and exploited and (mis)appropriated and altered, for profit and for personal enjoyment. there is a long history of westerners treating foreign cultures that way, including ancient greek culture! to focus on specifically the debates over whether scott’s character design is orientalist or whether martyn’s character design is misogynistic or whether legundo’s character design is just blatantly fucking racist is to miss the forest for the trees.
