Cemetery forests would be great, if you could get them to work out ecologically. Not only would you have healthy, sustainable burials with physical markers to mourn at, you’d also inspire emotional investment in conservation and promote old-growth forests. No one wants to chop down great-great-great-grandpa Karkat the oak tree for lumber.
@ask-treekat
you’re kidding me
You want a haunted forest. That’s how you get a haunted forest
Well, better a haunted forest than a haunted useless plot of land filled with concrete and steel and hundreds of gallons of poison that we have to constantly manicure. Haunted forests are classy *and* contribute to the world by absorbing CO2 and producing oxygen, providing shelter for wildlife, and help get goth teenagers to appreciate nature.
A small thing: I don't think Judith and Marta were doing the smart thing by calling for help.
Was it reasonable for them to know it wasn't the smart thing? No. They had every reason to believe the Emperor's help was exactly what they needed.
Probably only Ianthe could have told them why they shouldn't make that call. Palamedes sort of knew, but he didn't want to believe it.
Every theorem they're uncovering at Canaan House is forbidden knowledge. The necromancers are learning scary powerful tricks that they've been explicitly taught are impossible. Tricks the Lyctors have known for thousands of years, and that somehow the rest of their civilization has been prevented from knowing.
The communications blackout is not to help them focus, or to prevent them from getting outside help. It's to prevent leaks.
Even before Cytherea happened, none of them were leaving that planet alive.
John said he didn't want anyone to "lose their lives unwillingly at Canaan House". And in his own way I think he meant that; that distinction is important to him.
But what would have happened if the Second hadn't killed Teacher, and Ianthe ascended? If Cyth hadn't been there? At what point would it have become clear to the scions that the only way out 'alive' was as a lich? Maybe that's unfair. John tells us himself that he's not a monster, and promised to return those who didn't ascend "home in full honour, with trump and timbrel." And he does, after all, "know where remembrance lives in the brain".
A cavalier who makes a joyful intellectual decision to help their necromancer ascend for the glory of the empire and a cavalier who decides to die to protect their necromancer from disgrace or death (regardless of how much their necromancer might prefer that...) still gets John the Lyctors he wants. And everyone who dies 'agreed' to it (except for Babs, but who cares about Babs).
But can you imagine being the necromancer that learned all this, said "No" and then had to go back and rule a planet in this society as if all of this had never happened and they had just been returned home with honor? What would that do to your psyche?
Fucking yikes!
this is how all high protein dessert vids look to me

All these industries with shortages of workers and they can’t figure out why.
Im proposing the hypothesis that the reason we don’t have enough doctors/pilots/bus drivers/etc is that maybe, just maybe, having your entire industry function as a lifelong hazing ritual isn’t the best recruiting strategy.
Doctors are subject to 8 years of post-secondary education and are forced to work 48 hour shifts.
Pilots and other transportation workers have absurd hours of service requirements that start your rest period as “the moment you shut the vehicle down” and can be as short as 9 hours in some cases.
Railroad workers have to be available on-call 6 days a week and be ready within two hours notice. They don’t get sick time.
Retail workers have to keep a veneer of politeness against any and all abuse or they can be fired.
Truck drivers get paid by mileage and rarely see pay for shipper or receiver delays.
Work should not be designed to make you a miserable burnout and yet here we are.
