FROZEN 2: Winter's Coming
Imagine if the song “Let it go” wasn’t about casting away your childhood restrictions and becoming free, but instead a chant used by the oppressed to cause a revolution. This might not be too far off if Queen Elsa continues to rule the way she is.
I loved Frozen as much as the next person with its great songs and on point humor, but there is one thing I feel is over looked by many fans. Is Elsa really prepared to rule a kingdom? I think not.
Let’s talk about her education or the lack there of. Made clear by her childhood in isolation is that her parents were more focused on teaching her about concealing and not feeling, rather than the fragile diplomatic relationships needed to rule a kingdom. In my opinion this comes back to haunt the citizens of Arendelle when Elsa makes the worst decision she could. The beginning of the end for Arendelle was stopping trade with the Duke of Weselton.
Hear me out for a second. I don’t want to defend the guy, but I’m going to. I get that trying to kill Elsa was wrong, but he didn’t do it out of spite, he did it out of fear. He made a choice that he thought would end this winter nightmare. It’s more then you can say for most people there, just sitting around, wasting supplies, and waiting for it all to blow over. How was he rewarded for trying to get things done? He was banished from the kingdom and all trade was stopped with Weselton. I personally would have increased trade with them. You know, keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.
Weselton was the biggest trade partner Arendelle had and I am sure that the late King set up a trade route with such a sleazy guy for a reason. Weather it be profit, peace, or just to keep an eye on him. The repercussions of its end could be drastic and lead to numerous potential enemies. Most apparent would be Weselton themselves, and potentially its other trade partners.
To make up for the loss of profits Elsa is going to have to turn to a new source of income. The most obvious would be to use her ice powers to get into the ice trading game. After all she does have a unlimited supply, but due to supply and demand, with unlimited supply there is not a lot of demand. This will cause the tribesmen in the kingdom that rely solely on their ice trade with Arendelle to make a living to be quite upset. Some if not most might turn to terrorist guerrilla tactics. Now she is facing two opposing forces, and one of them from within.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse… BOOM… a third opposing force, and this one could be a powerhouse. Remember good old Hans who seduced Elsa’s sister then tried to kill Elsa, well he’s back with his brother’s army. Granted we know Hans’s kingdom has a primogeniture system where the eldest brother would inherit the kingdom, and most likely that would lead his older brothers to punish him with death when he returns from Arendelle to remove the chance of him plotting their own deaths. There is still a chance however his brothers follow another system that me and my three brothers follow “The bros before hoes code” or his eldest brother could just be fond of Hans like Jamie Lannister is towards Tyrion. This humiliation of family gives them a valid casus belli, a shrewd and powerful leader can take advantage of this. If that’s the case you now have a full scale war on your hands.
Now that the damage has been done and Elsa’s got a war on her hands I see three options for her. The first being she takes her greatest asset, her ice powers, and goes on the offensive, ruling by fear and power, oppressing those who oppose her. The second is she sits back and let’s Arendelle be wiped off the face of the earth. Or there’s the third option, which is what got me to write this in the first place, she steps up and learns how to become a diplomatic leader. If all else fails she can just put up a giant wall of ice and send people to the night’s watch.
Thanks for reading. This is just my initial thoughts on what the aftermath of the movie Frozen could be. If you’re interested in more of my thoughts on Frozen let me know this is just the surface of it all. You should hear about the powerful army I think Elsa could form, but in the meantime let’s just hope Disney chooses to address some of these in Frozen 2. Who knows maybe they could get George R.R. Martin to help write it?
