i think my real qualm is not with t/b preferences as a whole but it is actually with the few people who act like it's radical to make shane & ilya switch. it is so odd to me because the reasoning is always like "well they're subverting masculinity by switching" shane is already subverting masculinity by getting fucked in the ass by another man. ilya is already subverting masculinity by fucking another man in the ass. we don't need to flip it on its head again. you are assigning a connotation to their relationship that does not exist. like we simply do not NEED to take it that additional step and go all the way back around the circle and make them switch in order for their relationship to be woke enough. or whatever. "ilya has to bottom because of xyz ideas about toxic masculinity" no he doesn't. he sucks dick. he eats ass. he lets other men suck his dick. he marries a fucking man. he does not also Have to bottom in order to complete the cycle. he is queer enough. "shane has to top because he needs to let go of xyz ideas about toxic masculinity" shane states explicitly in his internal monologue in the canon text he does not want to top, does not enjoy topping, and hopes no one ever asks him to top. it's not going to cure his internalized homophobia to top. it's not going to change his idea of what it means to be a man. their sexual preferences are a big deal. they’re relevant to the story being told. i know shane’s being a little glib with rose in the restaurant scene but it absolutely matters that he specifies to her he is a bottom. it absolutely matters that in the book when shane says he had sex with someone else and didn't like it that ilya specifies shane wants "a big strong top". ilya is the same way—the catharsis he gets from being able to totally dominate somebody is something he desperately needs. he can’t get that anywhere else. these needs are integral to the fabric of their characters. i don't care if you make them switch cus that's what makes you horny. but if you're writing some great treatise about how you're saving them from suffering any longer in their strict dynamic by making ilya take it up the ass or making shane dom because it's only fair he should get to be in charge sometimes then i'm just going to assume you're a very silly person who has no idea what gay sex is actually all about. like i said i don’t care if people are doing what makes them horny. i DO care that some people seem to think it’s activism. and yes, sometimes it really is that deep.
