NOW IS FOREVER

I am glad this has made the rounds. Some people feel a dense misunderstanding or misinterpretation concerning gentrification, and I think it helps to hear a description/explanation of what gentrification is from those who are both affected by it and educated by the culture from which it hails. I and many others enjoy some of the delights of gentrification while simultaneously having their livelihoods threatened by it. 

This stuff is important because I keep seeing people go way too far in the other direction on gentrification, ie into “The povvos can’t appreciate coffee with more than one type of milk!” and “Replacing that betting shop with a cafe is gentrification, even if the betting shop was owned by William Hill and the cafe is owned by someone who lives on town street, because they put some ferns on the tables and got a mural done.”

i do think what gets ignored about carrie as a character is that she’s an incredibly easy target to bully; she’s a chubby, sheltered acne ridden teenage girl who wears frumpy grandma clothes and regurgitates the jesus freak shit her violently abusive mother tells her. she has violent thoughts about her classmates and is uncomfortable to be around. she’s far more interesting being a victim that’s somewhat uncomfortable to be in the head of than a tragic waif. she’s not a martyr, she’s a child and a child who’s been victimised her whole life shouldn’t have to be kind and angelic to be recognised as a victim. suffering teenage girls shouldn’t just be presented on screen as toned down glamorous thin ophelias, suffering teenage girls can be fat and poor and think violently. i do think we need to examine why culturally we need teenage girls to be beautiful and kind to valorise their suffering and treat it as bad

I don’t know why butchers aren’t chasing people around with their butcher knives in bloody aprons anymore but that isn’t a major concern in 2026. Maybe modern hairnets have a soothing effect.
