ᥫ᭡. a/n: it’s been too long since I wrote, usually it would just be kept in drafts and I feel like I’ve lost the ability to write 😢 but all in all, this is my first time writing something other than kpop. (So sorry if this work contains loads of grammatical errors, English is not my first language) and I hope you would enjoy this. Happy reading! :)
What lies beneath the walls of the Malfoy Manor is completely out of reach from the public’s eye.
People believe what was fed to them.
How the Malfoy’s play a huge role in bearing the weight after the war ended. The amount of charity events they had to invest in order to blind the eyes of reporters regarding the loyalty the family holds with Voldemort.
Lucius wasn’t capable of doing any of it. After war, he grew weaker from the injuries he sustained. Not even a week later he was bed ridden, depending on Narcissa to take care of his welfare.
It was all left for Draco to fulfill his duties. The charities uphold, estates taken care, the ministry’s problem. He was doing everything to not let the family’s reputation slip through his fingers.
It was so much for a young adult but it was bearable when you were helping him through it.
That was until a conversation with Lucius spark strong disapproval and banters between the family.
“The Malfoy bloodline is going to be at stake if you have no plan to have kids in the future.” Lucius said in a hoarse voice but sharp to show his impatient. “You need an heir Draco.”
You remained stiffened in your seat, eyes down, fiddling with the silver band on your ring finger.
“The healer has advised that it would put y/n’s life at risk. I will not put her life on the line for something that clearly I too— would not be ready for.” Draco said, with a sharp inhale to ease the anger in his chest.
“You are ready!” Lucius snarled. “I did not raise you just to only be selfish! I raise you to know how to get your priorities straight!” His fist hit the mattress, hard.
“Draco…” Narcissa chirped in. “You have so many options laid out in front of you. Y/n would understand.” Her voice pleads, her hand reaches out to carried her son’s hand.
Draco tensed at her touch. Narcissa’s touch. The one where he once finds solace in when he was younger when the world got too heavy for so such a young boy. Until the touch evolved into something that felt forced. The motherly love wasn’t there to comfort him.
He retract his hand, shifting away from her slightly.
“My wife’s decision still matters at the end of the day.” Draco said coldly. “I have priorities and she’s one of them. I’m not going to force her into something that’s going to bring agony to herself. We are taking this matter on our own pace. ”
Lucius frowned, his eyes stare at his son with a furious look before a sarcastic laugh appeared. “You’re putting your marriage above all? What is this Draco? Was losing dignity from the war wasn’t enough for you? Why? Because they fear you now—“
“Lucius—“ Narcissa was cut off once again.
“Love doesn’t give you a chance to survive in this world.” He remarked harshly.
Draco nodded slowly. “Like how you’re disregarding mother’s effort who stood by you for all these years. I’m not putting y/n in mother’s shoes.”
You placed a hand on his arm, soothing him from spitting words out of anger. “Draco,” you gently called.
You tried to be calm about it. You tried to understand why Lucius and Narcissa were
worried. You tried to hide the fear buried in the pit of your stomach.
Yet it took one look from Draco to see right through you.
Narcissa sighs. “We’re not asking you to risk your marriage Draco— we— we could opt for surrogacy. With Astoria. She’s no stranger to you nor y/n.” She persuades.
You stopped fiddling with your ring, almost letting it slip away out of your grasp.
Draco watched you, the colors draining from your face. “We’re not choosing that as an option—“
“I’ll think about it.” You said, cutting him off. “It’s going into consideration no worries— I just hope you two can give Draco enough time to settle everything that’s going on at the ministry at the moment.” You said, pulling a tight smile.
Draco looked at you, his expression was stoic but his eyes were pensive and worried. It’s Astoria they are talking about.
Narcissa gave a curt nod. “Of course, that would be acceptable.”
Lucius seems satisfied with your response. Everyone was.
Except for Draco that was going to have a long conversation with you later on once he’s done with work.
—
The knocks on your door was faint, anyone could’ve missed it if they didn’t knew it by heart.
You approached, swirling your wand on the door and hearing a soft click. The door shifted open and you were embrace by the scent of a subtle cologne and parchment lingered on his cloak.
Draco picks you up, feeling his exhaustion dissipates into thin air when he feels you underneath his touch.
“Did you wait too long?” He asks, softly planting a kiss on your lips before putting you down.
You shook your head, unclipping his cloak to be put away. “I just got here. The women’s unity organization was holding a meeting for a conference in August.” You said. “Which is still months away so you don’t have to think about it.” You added, neatly hanging his cloak by the rack before standing in front of the vanity to take off your earrings.
He gave a curt nod, observing your unusual behaviour. Frantic, slightly avoidant.
Draco stood behind you, his hands reaches out to carefully untie your braids, letting your curls fall past your shoulders. His eyes glances at you through the reflection and sees you quiet in your thoughts.
“what’s going on in that pretty mind of yours?” He asks, running his hands along your shoulders.
You reluctantly shook your head, turning around to face him. “Just felt sorry.” You murmured. “It’s been running through my mind all day— how much sorry I am for being the reason you couldn’t have a family of your own.” You confessed, an unexplainable void carved in your chest.
He stayed silent. He didn’t look furious either.
You shakily inhale a sharp breath. “Astoria was there. I talked to her after the meeting.” You were struggling to suppress the emotions in your tone. “She’s okay with it. Told me I should arrange the date so you two can discuss it. Get to know each other better.”
Draco hummed. “And how do you feel?” He question, looking down at you.
“This isn’t about me.”
He ignored your words. “how do you feel?”
You feel like you were struggling to breathe properly. “Just fine.“ you forced the words out of you. “She’s no stranger after all.”
You are so close into breaking down.
He drawls closer, tucked a few strands of your hair behind your ear. “Did I ever tell you how much I love you?” He ask, a gentle smile forming on his lips. The kind you rarely see he’d do in front of people.
You tilt your head in wonder. “All the time.” You replied, feeling his hand slowly stroking your back.
“So why are we lying to each other? Why are you willingly giving up on me if you knew you hated the idea of it?” He said, suppressing his emotions.
You were so crushed by the thought of it to even realize Draco was wiping your tears away.
“Y/n,” he breathed, running his thumb over your cheekbones. You didn’t respond to his call but silent tears were uncontrollably flowing.
You rarely show your struggles to Draco. It was an unsaid thing but you didn’t want to sound weak and break his spirit.
“Sweetheart.” the familiar nickname knocked you to your sense. You glanced up at him.
“I’m not going to do something that’s going to hurt you.”
You quickly shook your head, “you’re not.” You replied, wiping your own tears. “She’s our friend, a good person, I’m okay with it.” You persuade, pulling yourself together to convince him you were fine.
Were you?
“I’m not having sex with your friend just to keep the bloodline alive.” He said in a stiff tone. “This isn’t fair to you—“
“Draco.” You sighed, hands brought up to caressed his face. “We can’t always have nice things in life. That’s not how it works and I’m willing to do this.”
Draco’s eyes fluttered shut, taking in a breath and leaning against your touch. He knew he had no way into fighting you about this. He couldn’t bear to see you hurt.
He made up his mind.
“I can’t do this to you I’m sorry.” Draco murmured, leaning his forehead against yours. “I’ll find an alternative. I’m not planning a future of reputations, I just needed you.”
“And what if nothing works out?” Your voice interlaced with doubt.
“Then we can start again, just us.”
