my contribution to @creatingblackcharacters Melanin Beam Challenge is Queen from Deltarune!! I don't have as detailed thoughts on the choice to make her Black as I did with Susie last year, because for Queen it's basically that I think she's a really fun, silly, confident character who knows her worth and is pretty much universally loved and I think that would be a really nice character for Black women & girls to be able to see themselves in. It was really fun to do this challenge, I haven't had time to draw in months and having a goal was really exciting :)

With Art Fight this year I didn’t have spoons to make something new for @creatingblackcharacters melanin beam challenge, but I haven’t posted these Sonic designs on this blog yet, and I’ve never posted my Cream design anywhere! Squeaking in on the very last day. :) Also I love an excuse to ramble about these designs bc I love them <3
When it comes to doing gijinkas, I try and choose and specific ethnicity to make the character to practice drawing different features. I intended Knuckles to be Maya/Meso-American and Jamaican, based off what seems to be the inspirations for Echidna culture and the word of the developers. Rouge is Afro-Honduran, based on her resemblance to a Honduran fruit bat!
Sonic is Afro-Latino Blasian (Brazilian/Japanese). Not based on anything in particular, just his sick ass vibes. Cream is the one character I didn’t think of a specific ethnicity for, just that I knew she was Black! When looking up hairstyle inspiration I found an adorable little Black girl on Pinterest and just went “yup that’s her” (I also gave Cream melasma to mimic the patterns she has as a rabbit!)
And that’s my ramblings! I kept their canon eye colors but now I want to make versions with realistic eye colors, bc Rouge and Knuckles with dark eyes…. I think I hauve covid

I won't be able to finish the illustration before submissions are done, but I'll aim for end of redt of queue, but I can share some hairstyles exploration. Black hair is just too great to pick one and run with.
