just started watching TSHD and honestly it's a masterpiece because yoshiki is repeatedly having the worst day of his life living with a thing wearing his best friend's corpse meanwhile "Hikaru" thinks he's in a studio ghibli movie

the summer hikaru died is a horrible tragedy about being the only gay people in your hometown and how that complicates the experience of realizing your feelings for someone, the sense of isolation and otherness you feel growing up and knowing that youre different. it's also the series where a teenage boy falls off a cliff and dies because he stopped to look at a tree shaped like a sexy lady. im not kidding btw that's literally how original hikaru died. that's the inciting incident of this whole series. he went AWOOGA and ate shit so bad he died in the forest and that's how he got replaced by an eldritch entity. anyway everybody should watch the anime the first ep is out now

Completely relatable for Yoshiki to give in to his attachment to the not-Hikaru so early on. If I was an isolated, closeted gay teenager who’d lost my best friend (who I was in love with), and the eldritch horror that replaced him came back validating my feelings every second of every day, telling me how much he loved and appreciated me, touching me constantly, giving me honest, unfiltered declarations of devotion?? Shit, I’d fold too

The Summer Hikaru Died is like. what if you believed you were a disgusting monster for being gay. but then you meet a real monster, and over time you start to believe that even this monster deserves to be safe and happy, and it's the first time you start allowing yourself to believe that maybe you do too. what if I cried one million tears forever

“your friend is dead, and their corpse is inhabited by something only you can see for what it truly is" is already good horror. but "you begin to love the thing that wears their face"? the blasphemy of it. terror turning into desire. grief turning into longing. being enticed by what should repel you. it twists the knife deeper, because the horror is not based on deception anymore. the fear comes from recognizing the monster in its raw form and finding beauty there. you're not clinging to scraps of your friend, you're surrendering to something other, something wrong, and loving it. you're not holding onto a ghost of the past, it’s the monster itself that you choose
