i completely agree! it’s super hard for me to wrap my head around it too! here’s me taking a stab at answering, though i do veer off and tangent a lot:

with regards to her fans, i would say it’s because to them, taylor is their friend and taylor wouldn’t lie to them (having fake boyfriends is an example of what would be considered a lie), and if she does come out we’ll be the first to know and until then speculating otherwise would be outing her. technically, no, but this is the logic. and to their credit i do believe a big portion of swifties will vehemently stan gay taylor IF she explicitly comes out and she needs defending against other fandoms or the general public. it’s about their personal relationship with her, not wanting to do things they see as hurting her or inconveniencing her, and wanting to go by the book that she gives us. i can appreciate people who have this perspective in the sense that, i too take into consideration what i post and where i post it on the basis of what i believe to be true from the perspective of wanting to not get in the way of kaylor. like sometimes i see hardline debunking of taylor’s pr stunts on twitter and im like.. maybe there was an era where taylor wanted us to do that but.. do you all really think she wants that from us now? like, on the most public internet platform…? maybe…?okay i digress. so to me, many swifties just have have taylor’s best interest at heart, even though we may disagree on the premises. sometimes i think gaylors (umbrella term) can be condescending to swifties (they don’t make it difficult but hey) when debating about if taylor is gay and speaking strictly as a debate tactic, i think it puts up walls for a swiftie when a gaylor says what amounts to, i know taylor better than you and in fact you never knew her. because that’s a core piece of their personal identity and worldview. it is a stone that is simply too heavy to turn over and requires turning over a bunch of other heavy stones in the garden of their mind. plus we’re mean about it. granted, they’re all mean about it too. so yeah. i think people can make headway when done with care and on an individual and non judgmental basis, but then it becomes a question of, whose job should it be to do the work, etcetera… so communication breaks down. on a more simple note, a lot of these people have jobs and family and friends and in this day and age it can be a little hard to say something that might make you sound a little bit ‘crazy’ because you can’t really take it back. in past times, in lover era and partially during folklore era, when it became more trendy or socially acceptable to speculate on taylor’s sexuality because it was the vibes she was giving off, and the media was reciprocating those vibes, more swifties did. i remember after the YNTCD music video released, a very infamous hardline anti gaylor trolling swiftie on tumblr posted, i paraphrase, ‘we stan a bi queen’ — so yeah whether it’s a sense of propriety or a sense of impending fomo, they all have their reasons, even if they don’t make sense in the contexts of our worldview.

for the general public, it’s a little bit more difficult to answer (except for conservative people. that’s pretty easy to see why) but i would venture to guess that for more progressive groups of people it might have to do with taylor’s public persona (the one she crafts) not fitting their definitions of counter culture, and so there is a sort of tension akin to embracing a popular girl at the nerd lunch table, whose persona represents negative feelings for a lot of people in these spaces. now, the general public doesn’t not understand that historically speaking, taylor was not the popular girl at school by any means (which is a key theme in her discography) (and like.. she liked emo music etc) but i think that’s because the public’s memory is stuck on 1989 era, where taylor basically went to reclaim and relive and rewrite those parts of her life, being one of the popular kids for once, cool, someone who hangs out with models. so i think a lot of the general public has a built in resistance to seeing taylor in a queer light. come to mention it, there are echoes of this in some of the stuff i observed coming from the fair weather gaylors of folkevermore era. i remember a popular gaylor voice at the time, sometime midway through eras tour i think it was, said something to the effect of, queer is a political identity, and therefore, due to taylor’s actions / choices (i forget which), taylor should be seen as gay but not queer. i think this really encapsulates so much of the psyche both for many gaylors (umbrella term) but also likely for a lot of progressive people. people might be okay with the idea of taylor being gay, but only if she is gay in a specific way. and if she doesn’t fit the bill, it’s not worth discussing or it’s only worth discussing if it’s hate discussing, or discussing it without criticism becomes akin to agreeing with it, and so, as she continues to do things that people disagree with, people slowly but surely lose interest… or become vehemently anti taylor… or try to absolve taylor of everything by placing the blame elsewhere.. and when conversation dies off or goes obscure, it can feel like the only people left talking are the general public ones who don’t think she’s gay for any of the various above reasons, whilst most people who think or have thought to the contrary are disengaged.
