is this anything
I hope they pirated Minecraft on those computers. I think Rocky would like it
After seeing PHM the first time, I kept going back and forth between whether the betrayal scene was more emotionally devastating in the film vs the book. And had I made a post about it then I would have said the book! He's cornered by two military men who drag him to a holding cell where he then gets to sit and stew on his fate for the four days (or however many it is) leading up to launch. Stratt comes in and talks to him, he hates her and the situation and considers running but decides what's the point? I figured sitting there in dread and anxiety for days on end had to be worse, right? Better to just knock him out so he doesn't have to suffer more.
But the thing is... Book!Grace had time to process what was happening to him. No he didn't agree to it, no he didn't want to do it. But he still got to process it and, in some way or another, grudgingly accept his fate. Resign himself to it, I guess.
And after watching the isolated clip of Grace begging Carl for his life.... I've changed my mind. The film's betrayal scene is so much worse. Movie!Grace didn't get what book!Grace got. He was cornered before he made his run for it, then he was chased down like an animal and ambushed. He was pinned to the ground by multiple military personnel while he screamed himself hoarse, pleading. He begged Carl for help as he scrambled at the grass, breath wheezing in his panic, and was told he was gonna do great as they readied to force him on a suicide mission.
He was sedated without ever being able to process his fate, then put into his coma shortly after. His last memories of Earth are betrayal, dead grass in his hands, and absolute soul rending terror.
Project Hail Mary is a fantastic example of how filmmakers can create a faithful adaptation and still take artistic liberties. The writers didn't try to copy the book to a tee, and added their own elements (the mental health room, the astrophage transition, the beach scene on erid, Grace's wardrobe etc). They understood that a film is a different artistic medium than a book and tried to write the story in a way that best suited that medium, all while staying loyal to the original story and themes. Just like the book, the film showed us how two living creatures formed a friendship in such unlikely circumstances and had so much faith in humanity.
Others have said it and I'm gonna say it too: This film is beautiful.
This movie is so colorful and it's like a breath of fresh air in today's "blockbuster" movie era where everything is dull, washed out, too dark, desaturated, or blue. The space scenes especially are full of warm colors and hues. Planet Adrian? fucking gorgeous. The STARS even have color, which is actually astronomically accurate thank you very much, stars are not all white, they range from red to orange to yellow to white to blue!! And you can SEE than in the space scenes!
Speaking of seeing, you can see every scene in this movie because it's actually well-lit because they're not trying to hide bad CGI. So much of the movie is actual real models and puppets and line work and practical effects! They don't want to hide it, they want you to see it!
And the LIGHT? Oh my god the role of light in this movie. It should be considered a character in its own right. There's a scene where Grace is looking for Rocky and the light literally guides him down the hall. Light is constantly moving and changing in this film within the same cut, it's absolutely incredible. Light is so IMPORTANT in this film. It's directional, it's dynamic, it changes colors, it's vibrant! So many modern films can't do that because of the CGI; they need flat, ambient, consistent lighting to make the modeling work easier. Not in this movie!!

Do you think Eva Stratt really thought that Grace would refuse to go? She was prepared for the possibility, obviously, but do you think she thought that when it came down to it he would do the right thing? When he refused to go, and was prepared to damn the world and all 8 billion of its inhabitants, the world she had already sacrificed so much to save, do you think she felt - just a little bit - like he was betraying her too?
rumors and stuff
The way grace talks about his students is so cute omg
(Not a ship) thinking about their relationship dynamic regarding touch (part 2)
Labels for option 1:
(For grace) does stuff like this when it's just them but will often bump his shoulder into her/ nudge her when around others
Completely unaware that he does this btw
(For stratt) doesn't bring it up, knows that he'll get self conscious and weird about it
Honestly doesn't mind, she tends to run cold, the warmth is appreciated
Option 2:
(Panel 1 grace) is casually touchy with his favorite coworkers, which is noticed by stratt
(Panel 1 stratt) is doing 5D mind chess to keep vat morale just barely above water
(Panel 3 grace) getting the same feeling as a kid who realizes the drive to "Disney" is actually the dentist.
Also sad bonus for option 1 :]
I just watched a few PHM trailers for the first time and I do NOT ❌ FW THEM ❌. Ig my new project is gonna be a trailer

u cannot look me in the eyes and say ryland "calls a coworker a staggering waste of carbon over a theory that, when proven false, he then throws a trashcan about in frusteration" grace is not perhaps a little bit of a crash-out
"grace never forgives stratt!" "rocky hates her!" no, i think grace comes to understand pretty fast that he wasn't sent because his life was worthless or because he had nothing holding him to earth. he was sent because he truly was the only person for the job, there was literally no other option and time was running out, and i think grace and rocky both come to understand that.
i think that if grace ever met stratt again (which could never happen, there's no way grace is leaving his home and his partner. but if he did meet her again, with rocky at his side, obviously), she'd say with tears threatening to fall 'i wish i hadn't had to violate you so,' and he'd wrap his arms around her, and she'd cry for the first time in a very very very long time, and he'd cry for the fifth time that week
'i don't forgive you 'cause there's not anything to forgive. you saved the world as much as i did. as much as rocky did.'
'two worlds,' rocky would add, leaning against grace's legs, radiating comforting warmth through his exosuit
'yeah, it sucked. i was scared. i hated you for a while. but if our positions had been reversed...' he pauses. 'no, let's be real. if our positions had been reversed, earth would be a snowball by now. i could never be as organized as you, are you kidding? but in theory, i... I'd have done the same thing to you. and i'm always gonna remember what happened, but i don't blame you. because you didn't do the wrong thing.'
her getting that moment would be so. so cathartic. and she kind of got it when she saw grace's video logs and he says she was right. but that woman deserves to be hugged and explicitly outright told she isn't to blame alright i love her so much
god just. eva stratt is as much of a sacrificial lamb as grace but she doesn't get any recognition or exoneration, she gets sent to prison and reviled, and for what? for the crime of doing what she was tasked to do, the sacred task to save the earth no matter what? fuck. the scapegoat is never mourned as the lamb is. and for what? the transgression of having been born a goat?
