I dont care if 9/10 of the people who use the wheelchair ramp arent actually in wheelchairs. As long as the 1 person who needs it has access to it.
I dont care if 9/10 people who use the automatic push button on the library door can actually push the door open themselves. As long as the 1 person who the door is too heavy for gets to use it.
I dont care if 9/10 people who buy the can tab opener, or the little guitar clamp that holds the chords for you, or the hand grip that helps you hold chop sticks, don't need any of it and just get it to "be lazy". As long as the one disabled person who needs it gets access to it.
I do not care. Oh my GOD I do not care. As long as there's a disabled person on this planet who the accessibility device will benefit, the accessibility device is necessary.
Also, if you're so worried about people being "lazy" by using accessibility devices, MORE worried than you are about disabled (visibly or not) people not having access to them, you have unchecked ableism you need to work through.

It's a huge western flaw that we focus so much on independence we leave the onus on individuals to ask for help, but demonize the ask. We sandwich the demon in between the expectations of 1.) Hyper independence & 2.) Self reliance. We forget that co-regulation & interdependence is how we are biologically wired as a species, & we train each other to be islands instead of bridges. We're taught to prioritize individual/the self rather than leaning into community as a source of collective strength. We're taught from a young age that the more help we require the less worthy we are, when we aren't even born with any self reliance. We're rushed out of needing others as fast as possible, shrouding isolation in terms like resilience. We are proud of being alone. We call our lonliness a mental illness. What we long for but never get to name is the village we deny each other because we decided needing others is a weakness not a biological imperative.

The story of the Unicorn:
Everyone has seen Artemis from Sailor Moon, but I learned today about the unicorn. He’s sat under the Capcom sign in Mission Control.
His name is Eugene.
From Stan Love, lead Capcom (capsule commander) of Artemis 2:
Years ago, when the Orion spacecraft was part way through development, its hardware and software designs had so many flaws we wondered if it would ever fly. The joke in my office was “it’ll take a rainbow ninja unicorn to save Orion.” Jennifer bought the plushie, sewed its little ninja mask, named it, and kept it in the conference room as a humorous reminder of the importance of our work.
Sadly, Jennifer died young of cancer a few years ago. She can’t be in Mission Control to see Orion fly successfully around the Moon. But we put Eugene there to watch and cheer in her place.
Jennifer, you and Eugene made sure the Artemis crew made it home safe. Your rainbow ninja unicorn flew around the moon.

My lunch kit says lunch on it & this pleases me. 😂 I'm settled in to the new job pretty much, other than not being used to mandatory breaks & lunch times. I'm very much a take your breaks & lunch advice giver. I haven't ever been the person who DOES. 😅 I've always had jobs where it wasn't enforced so nobody did it, you just ate on the go or you got a caffeine fix & called it good in between whatever.
I work 2 departments & I'm in the quiet one today, we're rural so there's variety but it still feels like I'm not being productive enough. And that's on internalized capitalism & being used to wage slavery 🤣
I'm talking about this new stage of life in therapy a LOT. I've worked really hard to get where I am, both personally & professionally. But now that I'm here I'm like "Well this is suspicious." whenever things aren't the hardest/most annoying possible way for them to be 😂 It's not imposter syndrome so much as Other Shoe syndrome. That's not a real thing but it is a real FEELING.

You don't really think about living on reduced lung capacity until you get sick & a shower wipes you out. Or until you get sick & have to sit down cooking dinner. Or until you live by the puffer times like they're alarms, even when you're not sick. Or until you plan your days around air quality & whether or not there's resting spots & how long everything is going to take & 1001 other decisions that nobody who isn't living with a disability or raising kids with one ever thinks about. It's like that with disability. It just becomes a background app you're running that's draining your battery. Another example:
I'm used to thinking about autism 24/7, to where it's secondary nature so I don't always stay aware that I am. Until something or someone happens & I am often painfully reminded oh yeah this is an inconvenience for most people not just a way of being.
I'm not complaining, which some people seem to think I am every time I speak up about living with or parenting a disability. There are SO many choices you have to make when you have autism or are chronically ill that nobody is thinking about who isn't. And a lot of those choices could be reduced/removed if abled people stopped being spoiled little shits. I don't look disabled to you, because you never see me when my disability is affecting me to the point it would inconvenience you. I still have that extraordinary privilege. BUT AN INVISIBLE DISABILITY STILL EXISTS! Whether or not you are personally experiencing my autism or my post Covid symptoms, I AM STILL LIVING WITH THEM. And disability isn't always easily hidden. It should never HAVE to be, in the first place.
That's your psa of the day. You shouldn't need to have to be told to be a compassionate human being. You shouldn't need to have to have a visual cue "Oh hey this person is disabled let's not be an ableist asshole."
It is a very deeply disturbing thing in our society that if we aren't visibly shouting in some way that we need accommodations, we aren't treated like human beings worth accommodating. And when we are doing well with the accommodations that we need to succeed, all of a sudden we aren't considered in need of them. It always comes down to us not being worth it in some way.
Why do we have to be in crisis, & ONLY in crisis, for support to be available? That is a fundamentally insane concept in a "civilized" society. So yeah sometimes we just fucking stop making the effort, because we are always trying to make sure abled people aren't inconvenienced, but abled people rarely make the same effort to make sure we are accommodated, unless they're forced. It's so mercilessly exhausting.
Not everyone is born disabled (ie autism or etc) but ANYONE can BECOME disabled (ie Covid or etc)...why are we not building a society that includes disability instead of trying eradicate it? I don't care wtf you think about curing things, this isn't your experience. This is ours. And we're freaking tired of people telling us we shouldn't exist the way we do, & for being asshats when we try to explain the heavy cost of trying to pretend like we aren't disabled just to survive here.

I know the world is on fire but we sent ppl to orbit the moon & they named a bright spot on it after a loved one & that is humanity. Everything else is distracting. We are absolutely capable of so much enduring love. They went further than we've ever gone as a species from our planet & thier collective thought was "Let's bring her with us."
That is so undeniably & preciously our soul. Please don't let the world's conflicts take your will to persevere. The loved ones we've lost would want you to keep going. That's how we honor them: we don't give up. We bring them with us. ❤️🩹

I can't believe it's going to be 11 years without you. It's still strange to say your name like you aren’t here. I know nobody lives forever but I wasn't prepared to live without your steady, sassy presence. We didn't get near enough time together for you to see that I figured out this thing called living, after all. I'm sad you missed the part where I'm starting to be happy. I miss eating chocolate cake in the kitchen in the middle of the night because one or the other of us was sad & having tea with funny hats like we were the old ladies of some castle & you smacking me with tea towels every time I said "Jesus Christ." I miss how I was never a disappointment to you. You always told me I'd find my way. I did. I am. It's messy & doesn't look anything like we ever talked about, except I did in fact find the one who lets me hug the trees & loves all of me, even the things I find hard to. You'd like him, he's quietly steady & irreverently funny. I smack him with tea towels too but usually because he tried to eat my piece of cake. The little one is half grown now, he loves to hear me tell the stories of you & I always tell him how lucky he is that you showed me how to raise somebody with kindness. He's the best of us. Your home was always safe for me to stop holding my breath. And I think you'd be proud of who I'm becoming, in this life where I can fully breathe. I love you to the moon & back, plus one day. Say hi to the Aunties for me, & keep a chair at the card table. I'll bring the dimes when I get there. ❤️🩹
