i'm going to say something very controversial and brave: juan nuestra parte de noche and jude a little life are two ends of the same tortured suffering prettyboy spectrum
completely diverting from my usual asoiaf content here, but i‘m reading babel by r.f. kuang atm and all i wanna say is that miss girlfailure letty price should be thanking god every single day for the fact that ramy, robin and victoire have more restraint than richard papen and company. if literally any of the three of them was even a little bit less fundamentally nice and normal, letty would have been bunny corcoran‘d like three times over.
Being a guy who read Poppy War before Babel is like
Robin Swift: *does anything*
Me, shaking my head: this does NOT bode well for Robin Swift
Honestly, one thing that surprised me the most about The Poppy War was RF Kuang’s age. Like no offense, it took me two books to realized that the novel was not written by a middle aged person. Then Rebecca is literally just 4 years older than me and the first book came out when she was 22
I mean there are a lot of talented young authors but the topic that RF Kuang choose to write it just… wow

I keep seeing white book reviewers complain about how Babel is so very in your face and obvious about its rage at colonialism as if they would not twist the meaning of the book to fit into their convenient little worldview and find a way to say 'ok.. BUT' if it were NOT so clearly and explicitly laid out I'm sorry but it's true.
So my friend recently finished Babel and they said creating homoerotic tension between robin and ramy only to kill them afterwards was a weak move.
What does that even mean? If you wanted to a read a happy queer novel why did you choose Babel? Why are you looking for a fairytale ending in a book that deals with heavy topics like colonialism, racism, sexism, poverty, slavery, war and whatnot. Death was always upon them. Being gay doesn't magically give characters plot armour. War doesn't care about anyone's sexuality.
"The days had not yet come when Ramy wore Victoire's sloppily knitted scarves with pride, when Robin learned exactly how long Ramy liked his tea steeped so he could have it ready when he inevitably came to the Buttery late from his Arabic tutorial"
Ramy has my whole heart I love him sm🥹🫶

I finished Babel and just. What the fuck(positive) it's so good and I'm so sad about it
spoiler without context, babel by rf kuang
i'm currently reading the secret history and i find it really interesting how Richard will keep talking about Charles or Francis or (mainly) Henry for PAGES and then add one line about how pretty Camilla is and how he's so very in love with her. like be so fr rn— who are you trying to convince you're straight because you're definitely not convincing me
RIP Francis Abernathy you would've loved saying "I'm going to kms"
adding actual footnotes and academic citations to my The Secret History fanfiction because why wouldn't i

Honestly Henry did commit horrible and inexcusable and unforgivable acts but it doesn't mean that every single thing he ever did for the entire book had to be out of ill intent.
He didn't save Richard during Winter to get him to trust him, he saved him because Richard was his friend he found freezing to death in an attic. He wasn't manipulating Camilla, he loved her and was trying to protect her and prevent her abusive brother from hurting her any more. He killed himself for a lot of different reasons but one of them was that it really was the only remaining way he could find to get everyone out of trouble and make things somewhat right again.
He surely was detached, and while he generally didn't feel as strongly as other people and even suppressed his own emotions to try and always be as rational as possible, it's not like he was completely incapable of feeling anything at all. In his own aloof way, he did care for them. I think that it's really the fact that despite everything there was some good in all of them that makes them so compelling, Henry included.
yeah
