*This obviously depends on whether your zombie is sentient, and whether they have nerve endings!*

Physical whump ->

- getting bitten and turning into a zombie itself; the bite, getting sick and their friends worrying, then the disease taking them over (maybe their friends don’t have the guts to kill them so the zombie chases after them)

- being hunted when the zombie was doing nothing wrong (maybe if the zombie has some control over their actions and was deliberately choosing not to hurt any humans, but got shot/caught/killed by hunters anyway)

- malicious hunters torturing a zombie for fun and deliberately taking a long time before “killing” them

- it takes a lot to kill a zombie, so if they feel pain they could have dozens of injuries but still be alive, as long as their head isn’t damaged

- hunters keeping zombies trapped (in a lab? Cage? Outdoor enclosure for public viewing?) to be studied or kept as a prisoner, or attacked by others hunters for training/entertainment

- hunger being physically painful, the whumper might hold “food” just out of reach of the zombie

- the pain of decomposing/losing body parts

- if an antidote exists, the change back to human might be excruciating, and there might be aftereffects, like numb limbs

Emotional whump ->

- a sentient zombie feeling humiliated by being trapped/played with by hunters

- the pain of being hungry but not wanting to kill, especially people the zombie used to know (I’m thinking of Warm Bodies here, great movie)

- a sentient zombie being trapped inside a body they can’t control, so their old friends might shoot at them and they can’t talk or do anything but attack

- they’re functionally immortal, so living on in a world where everything is ruined and they can’t talk to anyone

Loud characters, bubbly characters, characters always relaying information and analysis to their team, characters who find it easiest to think aloud - all divested of part of their personality. Maybe they’re valued for their looks now, maybe they’re seen as monstrous and unintelligent, maybe the pep talks to their fellow whumpees get old….

Whumpee: Anything! Please, just anything, I'll even take scraps!

Caretaker: ...I'm not going to feed you scraps

Whumper walked in, lazily swinging something in his hand. Whumpee looked up as far as they could, stuck in a kneeling position with their head bowed. A chain connected to the painful muzzle on their face was looped around a hook on the floor, causing them to be unable to lift their head.

They whined softly, the bit heavy and intrusive against their mouth. The edges of their mouth had been cut up, droplets of blood running down their face. They struggled for air, the thick and unyielding leather flush against their face.

Whumper knelt down in front of them with a grin, running a hand through their hair. "How's my precious pet doing today, hm?" they asked jovially.

Whumpee whined again, low in the back of their throat. They leaned into the gentle touch, mouth aching.

Whumper withdrew their hand. "Well, I have a special surprise for you," they said, setting down the object in their hand. "Hold still."

Whumper leaned forward and slowly undid the straps of the muzzle, letting it fall away from Whumpee's face. Whumpee breathed in a deep lungful of air, their mouth able to close for the first time in, they didn't know how long.

"I knew you'd like that," Whumper said smiling. They held up the other object. Now you get your very own muzzle, without a bit!"

Whumpee froze, unable to help the whimper that escaped them at the mention of another muzzle. Yet they did nothing to stop Whumper as they buckled the new one on their face.
