Thanks to Cait Shelterās master, I now had at least a possible range in which to look for the Seis. But actually finding them would be like looking for a needle in a haystack. It was a good thing I brought a magnet. Or, in this case, a master hunter. I summoned Orion and Canes Venatici to begin the search. I called the Chamaeleon to disguise their magic signature, as well as my own. Sufficiently hidden, we made our way towards the forest. We were about to enter the trees when I was stopped by a tap on the shoulder. Wendy. āUm, sorry, but I was wondering if, maybe, I could come with you? I could help! I wonāt get in the way, I promise!ā
She was so earnest. It broke my heart to tell her no. But I had to. āIām sorry Wendy. Not this time. I donāt know enough about the situation right now to take the risk. But I promise Iāll be back. Donāt worry about me. Thatās what youāre worried about, isnāt it? That I wonāt come back?ā She sniffled slightly and nodded. āI promise Iām coming back, alright? This is reconnaissance. I donāt plan on getting into a fight. Okay?ā
āOkay,ā she acquiesced sadly. I felt better knowing that sheād still be safe here. So, I gave her a small hug, and continued into the forest.
When we got further in, I noticed the trees start to thicken and grow closer together. While we could still see the sky, I called out Aquila, also disguised, to scout above. According to him, most of the forest was extremely dense. In this case, that was actually a good thing, at least for our chances of finding them. They would need a base, with enough space for all of them to move around in. This narrowed down our search considerably. I sent Orion back, leaving the dogs out. I would send Aquila to scout open clearings. However, he would attract too much attention in the actual trees if they were hiding, so I called Musca to go with him. They would go one direction. I had to call another small and discreet spirit to come with me and Canes on land, so I summoned Lacerta. A lizard would blend in easily enough. With that done, we split off into our two groups, staying in mental contact the whole time.
After about four hours of not only keeping out four spirits, but sustaining the magic of a fifth, my magic was being worn down. And it was getting late. Our two groups met in an empty clearing, I sent Musca, Lacerta, and Canes home, and Aquila brought me back to Cait Shelter. We would try again in the morning. Which we did. And the next day. And the next. It wasnāt until the fifth day of our search that we felt a hint of magic. And this magic was unexpectedly familiar. Celestial Spirit magic. And it felt like a Zodiac.
We followed the magic carefully. When we got close, I sent Musca alone to get closer. Looking through his eyes, I saw a woman. Wearing white and blue with feathers all over. I felt a rush of disgust from Musca, and followed the feeling. On the ground in front of the woman was a Zodiac spirit. Aries. The poor thing was terrified of this woman. It was all I could do to stay where I was.
While I was observing this monster of a Celestial mage, a man joined her. Scarred, with purple hair, and a massive snake draped around his neck and shoulders. Before I could examine him further, he spoke. āHowās the āspecial trainingā coming, Angel? Enjoying yourself?ā He laughed cruelly as Aries whimpered and hid her face. I already hated both of them, but at least now I had name for the woman. Angel. Hardly a fitting name, but that wasnāt my problem.
āAlmost done here, Cobra,ā she smirked. āGive me another minute and we can keep looking.ā He nodded, then walked over to lean against a tree, pulling out a rat as he did so. The snake ate it in one bite.
After another torturous minute, Angel sent back Aries and turned to the man. Cobra. āThanks for the poison, by the way. It worked wonders.ā I wanted to cry. But maybe that meant he had poison magic of some kind.
Before I could figure out more, they both started moving into the trees. It wasnāt safe for me to stick around any longer. But Musca could. So, I sent him to follow them. Hopefully they would lead us to the rest. Once it was clear, the other spirits and I returned to base, where a worried Wendy waited for me.
In the short time I had been there, Wendy and I had become fast friends. We spent nearly every spare minute talking about our dragons and dragon slayer magic. I also spent some time helping her with her attack magic. Specifically, her Roar.
Every slayer has a certain set of attacks that are the same from slayer to slayer. Just with a different element. The roar is one of them. Along with the wing attack, claw, talon, and hard fist. As for the roar, I have the Spirit Dragonās roar, while Wendy has the Sky Dragonās roar. Her mother had focused more on healing magic and enchantments than attacks. And she was younger, so she never really learned the attacks. So, I was helping her. She was having trouble, to put it mildly.
Every time she would try the roar, she would either fail before the air could come out at all, or it would fade before it got anywhere. It didnāt have any force to it. Although, as timid as Wendy could be, that wasnāt surprising.
Anyway, when I got back this day, I couldnāt work with her. Now that I had found them, I had to pay attention to what Musca was seeing and hearing. While I sat and watched, Wendy waited with me, only leaving occasionally to get food for the both of us. In the first couple of hours, there was very little said between the two. Mostly banter and Cobra tormenting Angel. But after some time, they met with another pair. One very tall and sort-of.... blocky? The other was constantly moving. And fast.
Cobra spoke first. āHoteye, did you and Racer find anything?ā
The tall one, Hoteye, answered in the negative.
Before any of the others could speak, a forest vulcan leaped from the trees. It was a blur after that. Racer, as Iād learned he was called, ran faster than Musca could see, knocking the vulcan flat on its back. It was then that Hoteye moved his arms, and the ground around the vulcan seemed to become liquid, and it became stuck. So far I had learned of Celestial magic, poison magic, and now speed magic and apparently some kind of earth magic. But there were still two left. So where were they?
A moment later, the vulcan was dead in a flash of light from a staff in the hand of another newcomer. Even through Musca, I could feel this oneās power. It was extraordinary. But, it almost felt muffled, somehow. But I would have to figure it out later. Someone else came behind him, floating on a magic carpet? And to my surprise, he was fast asleep!
In my shock, I almost missed the others greeting the newcomer. Itās a good thing I didnāt, because it turned out that this guy was their leader. Brain. The one on the carpet must have been named Midnight, because I heard Angel scold Racer ādonāt wake Midnight. Itās your funeral if you do.ā That was ominous.
The Seis exchanged updates on their apparently fruitless search, and then started moving. Musca followed them to a small clearing, concealed by the trees. Now I knew all of their names, where they were, and the magic of all but two of them. I just had to find out exactly what they were planning, and the magic of the last two. I would succeed in the first goal, for the most part. But it was not going to go as smoothly as I hoped, as I soon found. Because when they left the clearing the next day, presumably for the whole day, I decided to investigate their camp. So when Cobra came back early? I was in so much trouble.
(Thatās all for now. I need a break. Writing it like this is different. It gives you more detail, but itās much more time-consuming. So Iāll continue tonight).
