“A woman has been arrested in Syracuse, New York, on complaint of her father-in-law, whose daughter she had married a few days before. She wore a complete suit of man’s apparel–and had evidently got a wife ‘under false pretences.’ The young bride didn’t seem to think that it made any difference, and clung to her female husband with all a wife’s affection. The justice committed the imposter to prison ‘for further examination’–but under what law she can be punished we confess ourselves ignorant.”

I recently rewatched the St Trinian’s movies (only 2 is up on Netflix but tbh, that’s probably the only one to watch since the other has an actor jump scare 👀💀) and still found that I enjoyed them (apart from the parts that did not age well), they were such campy fun romps that I do wish were still being made now (the makeover scene in the first will forever live rent free in my head). Rewatching these made me realise that even as a kid I thought Annabelle and Kelly had a lot of chemistry, so I was rooting for them throughout the first one 😂💖

sometimes that character just wouldn’t hide an injury. it’s a great trope but only if they would do that.

and sometimes the character wouldn’t try to push through sickness and do their day job or whatever. again i see what you’re going for but sometimes in these fics something else can happen. open your hearts and minds to scenarios such as “the character is actually pretty expressive about their needs and is willing to complain a lot but the other characters still don’t take it that seriously for whatever reason and have to deal with the guilt and quencies after”. or “the character takes a rest at the appropriate time (or earlier!) but then faces punishment/being ignored/hostility for doing so and that is what worsens their condition into a serious one.” or “the character is a practical one who informs people sensibly and takes every necessary step, yet to their distress their condition still spirals out of the control.” or whatever else but just do you see what i’m saying not every character is a silent sufferer and that isn’t the only way to put them in a situation . we can innovate

i keep seeing that post about how frustrating the buff guy -> petite girl type genderbending is, and i wanted to add my two cents regarding the addition of ‘just swap pronouns and don’t change the design’ approach because i think these are two sides of the same coin, as they both fail to really delve into what i think is the most interesting aspect of this design exercise.

the reason i find genderbending to be such a fun and interesting challenge is because, if you actually want to be good at it and put thought into it, you have to really consider the character’s canon gender expression and think about what it means to them and how it reflects in their outward appearance and presentation.

is this male character buff because he likes to work out / be strong, or does he aspire to achieve conventional heteronormative male beauty?

is this female character a tomboy because she likes to express herself in a more masculine way, or is she doing it to fight gender norms?

the answers to those questions should produce very different designs!

this website loves to say that gender is a spectrum, but sometimes i genuinely wonder if people actually understand what that means.

gender expression, much like gender, is also a spectrum, which is why keeping the character exactly the same won’t always work, in the same way that just making the character conventionally attractive won’t always work. but sometimes, a buff dude would actually just be a hot girl. lady bane, however, would 100% look exactly the same.

#yup!!! sometimes the buff guy is being the best at conforming to his gender so it makes total sense to do the same as a girl #and sometimes he's big and beefy and she should be too
