i was terrified of doing this in undergrad, and now that i’m asked to write them fairly often, i am fondly exasperated when my students don’t know how to ask for them. obviously there’s no single way, but here’s the way i usually do it.
THE FIRST EMAIL
should be short & should mainly be asking whether they’re willing to write you the letter
should provide only the basics - what the professor absolutely needs to know.
the position you’re applying for
when the letter would be due
optional: if you’re afraid they won’t remember you, a quick line identifying yourself & your relation to them
i like to provide an “out,” in case they don’t want to or are unable to write the letter
SAMPLE Dear Professor X, I’m applying for a job as an English tutor at the University Student Resource Center, and was wondering if you’d be willing to write me a letter of recommendation for the position. [optional identification: I really enjoyed taking English 300 with you in Winter 2016, and I’m hoping to develop and pass on those skills to other students through this job.] The letter would be due by September 1st - I know you’re very busy, so I completely understand if you’re not able to write one. All best, Your Name
THE SECOND EMAIL
they said yes!! amazing.
this one can provide a little more information – a link to the job posting, if there is one, or you can write a quick summary of the position, plus a sentence or two about why you’re excited/interested in the job.
also tell them where to send the letter!!
directly to the recruiter for the job
to you, to add to your application packet
upload to an online LoR service or to an application website
99% of the time folks are fine with receiving electronic copies, but if they need to mail a hard copy, let them know up front.
SAMPLE: Dear Professor X, Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. Here’s the link to the job listing; the letter should be sent as a .pdf file to the email address at the bottom of the page, anytime before 9/1. Thanks again – I’m hoping that this job will provide me with some teaching experience and the opportunity to work on my own writing. Please let me know if you need any more information! Best, Your Name
WHEN TO SEND A FOLLOW-UP
these stress me out real bad but here’s the deal: most professors have a very shaky relationship to deadlines (especially when they have half a dozen more important ones than your piddly LoR).
the upshot: do not be afraid to nudge them.
often they need the nudge and are appreciative of it.
when that nudge happens is up to you and how much room you’ve given them before the deadline, and it’ll look different depending on your relationship with that professor.
GRAD SCHOOL LETTERS
i offered to send my professors essays that i had written for their classes, especially if i had taken those classes more than a year before asking them to write the letter, just so they could refamiliarize themselves with my work. you can also offer to send them your writing sample, if you haven’t already asked them to look it over for you.
honestly i’d recommend asking for these in person bc it’ll give you a chance to talk to them about their grad school experience and your own hopes & aspirations, which will help them write a more personal, fleshed-out letter.
one important note: if this letter is intended for use in grad school applications, do not stress out if it’s a little late. most programs do not care, and pretty much all of them accept late letters without a problem. your professor’s ability to meet deadlines does not reflect on you, and professors are intimately familiar with running late on LoRs. they really honestly don’t care. as long as it gets there before too long, you’ll be fine.
thank-yous are up to you! keep in mind that many departments have policies about gift-giving. i did give thank-yous to my three major letter writers, but they were handwritten cards & homemade cookies, nothing store-bought or expensive.
THERE IS A PANDEMIC GOING ON OUTSIDE. WE ARE SUPPOSED TO ACT NORMAL AND TAKE OUR CLASSES (WHICH HAVE SOMEHOW INCREASED) . IT IS PRESUMED THAT STUDENTS ARE AVAILABLE 24/7. THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE NEVER ENDING. STUDENTS WHO HAVE NEVER PULLED AN ALL NIGHTER, HAVE TO PULL ALL NIGHTERS NOW. NOT ONLY IS MY MENTAL HEALTH BEING AFFECTED BUT ALSO CONSTANT SCREEN TIME AND LONG CLASS HOURS ARE MAKING MY HEADACHES WORSE. THE TESTS ARE COMING FROM LEFT AND RIGHT AT SHORT NOTICES. I CAN HARDLY UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE CLASS. THEY ARE FAST PACED TOO. AND ON TOP OF THAT MY ANXIOUS AND SELF CONSCIOUS SELF IS TOO SCARED TO ASK ANY DOUBTS. BUT TEACHERS WOULD SAY THAT'S YOUR PROBLEM *hahahha*. I CAN'T EVEN TAKE DAYS OFF IF I HAVE CRAMPS OR SOMETHING. LIFE IS FEELING LIKE A ROLLER COASTER. SOCIETY THINKS IT'S ALL OKAY BECAUSE THE NEW GENERATION IS TECH GENERATION SO IT'S ALRIGHT FOR THEM, THEY ARE MADE FOR ALL THIS. THEY THINK IT'S IN FACT EASIER FOR US AND WE SHOULD ACT NORMALLY AND GO ABOUT OUR REGULAR LIVES JUST ONLINE. IT'S ALL HAPPENING AT HOME AFTER ALL, SWEETY. I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH IT'S NOT OKAY. NO, I CANNOT FINISH THAT ONLINE EXAMS WITHIN TIME LIMIT BECAUSE I CANNOT TYPE ORGANIC CHEM REACTIONS WITH SYMBOLS AND ALL SO QUICKLY. NO I CANNOT DO THE PHYSICS ASSIGNMENTS ON MY OWN SO FAST BECAUSE I HARDLY UNDERSTAND ANYTHING. MATHS ISN'T THAT EASY BY LOOKING JUST AT THE NOTES. LITERATURE AND HISTORY HAVE BECOME BORING LECTURES, SIMPLY BAD AUDIOBOOK RECORDINGS. ECONOMICS IS AS BORING AS THE FINANCIAL NEWSPAPER.IT'S NOT OKAY. IT'S TOTALLY NOT. EVERY SINGLE DAY I END UP CRYING.I CANNOT. I REPEAT I CANNOT. I GIVE UP. SERIOUSLY I GIVE UP.
Thanks for coming to my rant. it's okay*chuckles*. *then cries in a corner*
yes! yes! yes!!!! 💯💯
dark academia critics
dark academia is like one of my favourite aesthetics however there are certain things/issues that bother me about this whole aesthetic
1. where is the diversity?
have you ever come across any dark academia posts that included any people of color. everywhere I go, all I see is elite white kids. I would die to see japanese/korean/indian /pakistani/ african/ middle eastern dark academia students often wearing their ethnic attires and embracing their cultures.
2. eat the rich
I know the whole theme about dark academia is ivy league/ rich elite students but imagine middle class dark academia srudents who are not necessarily clad in expensive attires rather wearing clothes bought from the thrift stores studying on scholarships, who own second hand books and antique/vintage items from some local flee markets or thrift stores.
3. fuck that Greek philosophy
not that I hate Greek philosophy but all dark academia posts do talk about is western art/architechture/ mythologies / history and philosophy etc. I would love to read and discuss persian poetry and history , south asian mythologies, japanese/Arabic/korean calligraphy, Muslim world's art and architecture.
4. what's up with that nerd shit.
why are dark academia students always protrayed as nerds, reserve, quiet, hates to have a social life, perfectionist who can't afford to get any grades lower than As etc like even the best students have their ups and downs, what matters is the passion and the will to do better. It's okay to have a life outside books, to have romantic dates, to prank, to hangout with yout friends, to skip classes, to be unorganized...its more realistic.
Wind Flower
Maybe I'm that girl,
That dances in an empty salon
To music nobody ever listens to
And enjoys every second
Maybe I'm the one who cries
In a blue tinted resteraunt
Staring into stale hamburgers
And calling it the epitome of luxury
Perhaps I'm one that walks through cities
And marvels at neon lights and nightclubs
In denim dresses, or on a lonely Ferris wheel
My night will never be more alive
Maybe I'm the one
You find plucking flowers from bushes with none left
Who walks on roofs, on trains
Rosy, yet golden
Why don't my eyes bloom like roses?
I'm definitely one of the girls in your favorite bar
Drinking away like dandelions to a whistle
Always dressed disheveled, yet polished
The one who sings, in a horrible tune, who lets out a drunken trill
"Why are we the only ones dancing?
Maybe our tears are just tunes on a piano,
maybe we will pit-pat our ways into the hearts of those who bloom under whisky licked lips.
But tonight,
Let's fill our lungs with liquor and love,
Let's let the flowers of the wind bloom"
(let's fill our lungs with piano tunes and let's live like we are children: let the wind flowers bloom and we will find our way, whether we are crying or dancing: let's find our way through bars, cities and salons: let's blossom like we never did before)

types of study breaks for every situation
if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.
if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.
if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.
if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.
if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.
if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.
if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.
if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.
Every girl has had the experience where a creepy guy asks for our number and we don’t want to give it to him, but we also don’t want to get gutted in a back alley. “Give him a fake number!” I hear you call, okay and then he says “okay let me call you real quick!” Because they are learning. “Give them your number and then block them!” Okay and then they can plug it into something like Spokeo, pay $10 and know everything about you. So what do you do?
First pick a fake name, I use Jessica, then download the Google Voice app, hook it up to your email, pick a number, and set up a fake greeting with your fake name. You can set it to ring your actual phone like a normal call or text but they don’t have real info on you.
Go forth and don’t get murdered, ladies!
Everyone reblog this post.
This is so fucked up that we as women have to go to these lengths to avoid creepy men because they don’t understand NO
Buddha of Leshan | ( by Marcel )
The Buddhist doctrine of autonomy: man is the free master of his own destiny. He alone is responsible for what he is. Thus in conformity with his vocation, he can confirm the state in which he is, or he can change it. There are no penalties and no rewards; therefore there is nothing to hope for and nothing to fear; the only things that must be taken into consideration are objective, unsentimental, extra-moral connection of cause and effect. If a Buddha sets himself free, it is by his own efforts alone. On the path leading to awakening no external aid is to be looked for. This conception, on which already pivoted the traditional Hindu notion of karma, is particularly stressed by Buddhism. The historical Buddha, as is well known, did not present himself as a divine savior, but as a man who, after attaining by himself enlightenment and the Great Liberation, points out to those having a like vocation the path to follow. All this refers to early Buddhism.
