If I have to watch one more man try and mansplain “The Fate of Ophelia” to me while simultaneously getting the meaning and intended reference in the song wrong I’m going to go postal. The song is about how her relationship with Travis saved her life not about how she or her life resembles Ophelia’s. But even still she can and does draw parallels between herself and Ophelia, and they WORK!

Ophelia was used, abused and lied to by the men in her life, causing her to go mad and eventually drown herself. Taylor has been used, abused (we can garner from her previous works she’s at minimum been emotionally and potentially mentally abused by former boyfriends ie. Gyllenhal in All Too Well and Mayer in Dear John and Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve as well as Heely in Smallest Man Who Ever Lived) and lied to by the men in her life whether it be the men she’s had romances with or the men she’s had business relationships with. There are several instances in Midnights and TTPD where she implies she had thoughts of self harm and talks about how she felt she was going mad.

…taking this back to Taylor’s past work, specifically TTPD, Taylor wrote about her own descent into “madness” as she lost the love of her life, a tortured poet (sound like Hamlet himself, anyone?). With TLOAS being described as effervescent and exciting, perhaps the Fate of Ophelia is how she escaped Ophelia’s doomed fate, not losing herself to her melancholy, but stepping into this new era?

Taylor Swift on her thought of process writing 'The Fate Of Ophelia':

"I just have this fixation on Shakespeare characters that I fall in love with and I can't stand to see them meet a tragic demise. I can't, I don't want that to be what happened to them because I'm like 'Wait, are you talking about Ophelia? she died? what do you mean?' I was really excited to see what happened with her and Hamlet. They seem great. And I'm kind of going back to the song 'Love Story' which I wrote when I was a teenager. I was just like, I can't watch Romeo and Juliet not work out. What do you mean they both die? They don't in my version of things. So it's like you just turn the movie off before the bad ending. But this is a little bit like that, The Fate Of Ophelia talks about how Ophelia was driven mad by love and it talks about- the hook says like, you dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of ophelia. It's a love song, and it's also just got one of catchiest post hook kind of sections that I'm pretty proud of. It's crazy to talk about the songs this much, it's been a secret for over a year."
