Anyway if youâre from the US and you ever wanted to know what tumblr feels like from a non-USAmerican perspective (please note that the rest of the world is not a monolith either and none of these apply without exception):
Everybodyâs talking about brands and stores youâve never seen in real life. You generally assume they exist, but they might as well be one giant prank the rest of the internet is in on.
You find a post that just sounds wrong. It makes no sense. Itâs like OP lives in a weird alternate reality. 9/10 times, itâs just some USAmerican Thing.
Youâre still not entirely sure how much an inch is. Or a foot. Or even how many of the former there are in the latter. You maybe know your height in feet and inches.
You have no idea how much a pound is. Youâd also like to know how the fuck pound shortens to lbs.
What the fuck is âmilitary timeâ
Somebody talks about some legal process or something similar. They donât mention which countryâs legal system this pertains to. You know anyway.
People talk about politics. None of it pertains to you. Many posts contain guilt tripping. âHow can you not care about this?? Why wonât you reblog this?? People need to know this about x candidate for y position!â Youâre busy trying to stay on top of the political landscape in your own country.
You pick up some random slang from the internet. Monkey see monkey do. Youâre called racist. You didnât know it was AAVE. You learnt it from black letters on white background, not from the mouths of people whose faces you could see. How would you have known? You try to unlearn it.
People tell you that you must publicly denounce Chick-fil-A or youâre homophobic. You donât even know what a Chick-fil-A is.
People say you donât know LGBTQ+ history. What they mean is you donât know USAmerican LGBTQ+ history. Nobody cares about your countryâs history.
Youâre âcalled outâ on using an âoffensiveâ term. Itâs (a direct translation of) a completely harmless word where you live.
People expect you to have an idea of how far apart 2 USAmerican states are. You barely know geography past your countryâs immediate neighbors.
You randomly switch between British and American spellings. Nothingâs real and there are no rules.
People talk about multiple hour car rides and you get twitchy just thinking about it. You suddenly understand why USAmerican cars are so big.
Somebody talks about school shooting drills. You only ever had fire alarm drills.
You see a cool statistic. The studyâs only about the US. Itâs unfortunately of no use to you.
People misuse/misspell words and names from your native language. Itâs tiring.
(You feel sorry for the French. Nobody should be allowed to mangle the word dĂŠjĂ vu like that.)
Youâre still not over the fact that USAmerican school children are supposed to say that pledge thing every morning. Youâre never getting over that.
You still donât know why the men are fresh or what the fuck a sophomore is.
Who the fuck pays up first and then fills up gas??? Thatâs made up, right??
Everybody has a weird obsession with some comfort food youâd never even heard of before you signed up here.
Fellow non-USAmericans, please add anything else you can think of.
day to day

Besides the fact that Mary is an abysmal wife (I could go on for years about that point), Johnâs not the best husband, and their relationship was doomed from the start. Obviously we didnât get to see every single aspect of their dating life, but in regards to the show, their entire relationship pretty much revolved around Sherlock.
John was deep in grief over Sherlock when they met, and it was heavily implied that working through that grief is what triggered them to start dating. John even semi-referenced his grief when he was proposing (usually people focus on the happy excitement not dead best friends).
Much of their engagement was spent with Sherlock, mostly John and Sherlock on cases because John wanted to escape the wedding planning. Not to mention Sherlock planned their wedding.
One month post wedding, when they should still be in full blown honeymoon phase, and getting ready for stupid accident baby (I still really hate that stupid baby, worst plot decision ever!), John is beyond grump and literally dreaming about running off on an adventure with Sherlock.
Immediately Maryâs lies start to be revealed, and John presumably moves in with Sherlock for MONTHS! He sure as hell doesnât talk to his wife for months. And again, they should be prepping for the stupid baby.
John âforgivesâ Mary, moves back in with her, yet still seems to spend all of his free time with Sherlock, to the point that he ignores his phone and almost misses the birth of his stupid child. Even after the stupid baby comes, heâs at Baker Street. Remember when he made balloon John to keep Sherlock company when he was downstairs helping Mrs. Hudson with Sudoku? Heâs not helping Sherlock with a case, you think heâd be at home with his beloved wife and spawn, but no, heâs doing number puzzles with his former landlady.
More of Maryâs lies are revealed and she ditches her husband and child (who those after her should be fully aware of), and even in her goodbye letter, she references Sherlock. Letâs not forget that John anticipated that sheâd ditch them before Sherlock even confronted her (Sherlock and John always trusting each other), and he and Sherlock worked out a plan together.
Then we have her âtragicâ death complete with a guilt trip, and she leaves the ridiculous DVDs telling Sherlock to nearly kill himself, and that since sheâs gone they can become âwhat theyâve always been and were meant to beâ (Iâm paraphrasing)
And I didnât even talk about how John conducted an emotional affair with Sherlockâs sister (perhaps because she subconsciously reminded him of someone?) when anyone else would have been in full on happy family, âwe have a beautiful new childâ mode.
TL;DR: If we were meant to root for John and Mary, why the fuck did they make their relationship such shit, and have John running to Sherlock at every possible opportunity?
Today on ârules of English language I didnât realise were a thing until someone pointed it outâ
If anyone wants to see the low attendance numbers for themselves at the LA Sherlock con, notice that this is the main stage and the talk occurring right now is with Mark, Steven, and Sue. This is nothing like the London event last year.
"Mary shot him nicely." Can someone make a compilation of Sherlock's expressions of agonic pain after he's shot? Because I recall them awfully heartwrenching.
I got a visual for ya

Something More About Mary
I didnât realize people would be so salty about my brief convo with Steven about Mary. I prefer Mary to be evil cuz I think itâs more logical and hella more interesting, but to me itâs their show, they do what they want. Anyways, hereâs the whole exchange while I remember it.
Me: do you think Mary was redeemed in the end, or was she still morally dubious?
Steven, surprised: well I donât think she was morally dubious at all!
Me: uhh she did shoot SherlockâŚ
S: but she did it nicely, it was surgical. She was stuck in a difficult situation. If Sherlock didnât mind it, why should we?
Me: so you think she was redeemed by her ending?
S, slightly frustrated with me: she didnât need redemption, itâs not a scorecard. She had such a tougher background, so her movement towards humanity means more than âŚSherlock is also, but heâs getting there, and John is solidly (for humanity, something like that I forget the wording, he rambled a bit, Mary took a bullet for Sherlock etc. )But sheâs dead now, and thereâs not a scorecard for that. Itâs not black and white.
Me: ok, thanks for your time.
Sigh.Â
Moffâs emotional intelligence, understanding of relationships, of the natural consequences of oneâs actions, and knowledge of the way to influence and impact your audience with your writing seems to be really low⌠I mean even Amanda was tweeting stuff like, âMary is a fucking psychopathâ. Granted Amanda says a lot of stuff on Twitter for strokes, but like I think itâs fair to say that even she thought Maryâs arch was either going to turn out a little differently than it did, and/or felt that some of Maryâs actions in TST qualified her for âfucking psychopathâ status. Also, if you set a character up to a) come between the protag and his love interest, and b) have them shoot the protag, and c) have that protag claw his way back to life just to save his love interest, and then d) have that character threaten to murder him again if he causes her to lose the man they both love, itâs only logical that an audience will assume that that character is meant to be viewed as villainous, or at the very least a clear danger and obstacle to your protagâs happiness and wellbeing. And yet Moffat seems incapable of comprehending this? The mind bogglesâŚ
So if you have a tough background and are in a tight spot, it is ok to shoot someone? Iâm sure law enforcement will be happy to let you go once you explain the circumstances. I really feel sorry and maybe even a little worried for Sue to be married to a man who thinks these things. In what universe would Sherlock be ok with being shot, going through months of pain, suffering and rehab. What if Mary had shot John because she was in a tight spot. Would that have been fine? Truly, this is a man who has absolutely no understanding of consequences of actions.
Donât know what made Amanda say that Mary was a psychopath. My theory is that that happened when sheâd decided it was all over between her and Martin. Before that tweet, in every interview, she was of the opinion that Mary shot Sherlock because she loved John so much and was scared or whatever. Or perhaps sheâd learned that Mary was going to jump in front of the bullet intended for Sherlock and thought that made her a psychopath?
Oh for Gods sake, what absolute crap that man talks. How the fuck can you shoot someone, and they actually die, nicely? If someone shot him and he died and then magically came back to life when the surgeons had given up on him does anyone think heâd become friends with his attacker and then go around saying oh yes, but I was shot nicely?
That whole scene and its idiotic aftermath was one of the reasons I gave up on the show, because I thought it had simply become unbelievable rubbish. Now, Moffat compounds my loathing of him, sorry about that, by talking this absolute mind blowing drivel about someone being shot nicely. Sherlock didnât mind. Oh well, that was your crappy, shitty writing, and totally unconnected with reality.
Iâm somewhat tired, to be honest, in trying to be polite and reasonable about this, sorry, but everytime I read what Moffat says now I just get incredibly angry. He is simply absolutely clueless, as far as Iâm concerned, and understands nothing.
YOU CANNOT SHOOT SOMEONE NICELY STEVEN. Go away and do some fucking research. Or just go away, permanently.
Iâm laughing so hard about this. It isnât even just only what @sussexbound addressedâthe function of Mary as minor character coming between protagonist and love interest, shooting the protagonist etc.âit is the fact that Mary was blatantly MIRRORED WITH MAGNUSSEN on several levels. And it was done in a way that either signals total brain death or absolute intentionality. Weâd thought it was the latter; now itâs the first? Am I really supposed to buy that? There seems to be no other choice?
So you just⌠well, what, if you discard one scene as deleted scene youâre like oh hey wait I liked the lighting so much in that scene letâs re-shoot it and just have someone else in the protagonistâs place without any repercussions! Oh letâs take Mary to give her a bit of an edge why donât we?! And what do you think about recycling lines? Been thinking all night, canât think of any other but the t-shirt line for John⌠yeah letâs take it. Audience wonât notice it anyway theyâre all brain dead, plus itâs once at the start and the end of the episode. No one will notice!
What the⌠fuck. They clearly know how to write antagonists. Moriarty? Magnussen? Hell, even Smith? Well done villains. I would have said Mary up to s4 too, but⌠LMAO? you canât tell me you arenât aware of what tf you are doing when youâre conceiving a character in a way you did with Mary. I suppose weâre supposed to be happy about the psychopathic edge theyâve given her to show Johnâs interests lie with the âdifferent people,â because he isnât that ordinary either? Whoâd have thought! I would never have been able to think of that! It isnât like he has been pining for his self-proclaimed sociopath of a best friend the last YEARS! Good god, what planet are they on? What the fuck? Itâs hilarious to me by now because Iâve really come to care so little, but a part of me is still furious and disappointed af.
Yeah letâs just be glad they gave John an âintriguingâ love interest. It could have been someone as funny and upbeat and crazy as Sarah who in the end it was just boring and normal! could have been Jeanette who has some self-respect and deals with difficult men in a way that involves not killing someone else. How mundane her problem solving behaviour was⌠so letâs get John a psychopathic woman whoâs then reformed in her ways because she got a family who donât we?! Jolly good idea!
What were they smoking?
whatever they were smoking can I have a hit cause lord I feel like I need it

A Study in Shooting Nicely.
Mary: Hi Sherlock! I'm going to shoot you and you may have like a 95% chance of dying. But don't worry, I'll shoot you NICELY and even give you 3 seconds to figure out how to not die. That's ok right?
Sherlock: Yeah ok that sounds like surgery
Me: WTF
Everyone else: WTF
Mark and Steven: ÂŻ\_(ă)_/ÂŻ You can totes shoot people nicely. It's a thing now.
Mofftiss on Mary.
Mofftiss, an intellectual: we looked up the word grief in the dictionary
âAcceptanceâ as a part of emotional healing means âacceptance that this is where you are, and all positive progress will stem from this point in time, you cannot move forward from some imaginary point in the past or future, you can only begin from where you actually are.â
It does not mean âyou need to learn to regard the shit situation you were/are in as acceptable.â
That shit that happened/is happening to you?  That is merely the reality of what has happened/is happening.  Your goal is not to say âitâs okayâ, to forgive, to say âthis situation is fineâ.  You NEVER have to say those things if you donât want to, and you SHOULDNâT say those things if they are not true, it will not make things go any faster.
Your goal is to be able to say âWELP, hereâs where we are, in Bullshit City.  I guess we start from here.â
Acceptance is a realistic assessment of where you are and a willingness to begin from there. Â It is a recognition that old patterns, whether positive or negative, cannot or do not have to continue.
And itâs not a 100% all-or-nothing thing.  Some days you will be a lot more level than others.  Some days you will be really angry or sad about what happened/what you lost/what is happening.  Thatâs okay.  But on many and eventually most days you will be a lot more focused on the future, and what you can do.  And believe me, that is SUCH a huge relief.
Soooo, if someone is encouraging you to think of âacceptanceâ solely as âcontentmentâ or âtotally at peaceâ, they are approaching it wrong, in a very not-helpful way.
If you are struggling, maybe it will help you to see that this important recovery stage is not an insultingly tall hurdle you have to jump with a smile on your face and perfect gracefulness. Â
It is merely an end to foundering because you have found your new solid ground. Â It will be a quiet, messy thing, and it may sneak up on you, but it will come. Â And from there, you can go in many different directions. Â New ones. Â Ones you never imagined.
If you arenât there yet, keep going. Â Fight and scream and cry if you have to. All that shit is necessary shit! Â Do what you gotta do! Â Just keep slogging, and try to hold on to the fact that eventually, even if you donât feel like it, youâll get there.
The bad stuff will never be âokayâ. Â But YOU can be. Â YOU can be okay. Â You WILL be.
