The German dub of Dr.Stone (Part 1?)
So I'm in a very long and deep depressive phase for some weeks now and keep rewatching my comfort series and YouTube Videos, including Dr.Stone. I rewatched episode 4 of season 4 in german dub and noticed yet again, how hilarious the dub is. I wrote down some quotes because why not. Wanted to share some funny ones and some of my favorite ones with you.
1."Der scheint Videospiele zu vermissen, so wie der uns die Lichter ausknipsen will!"
->"It seems like he misses videogames the way he wants to eliminate us!"
Gen after Stanley flies into the sun, to get into position to deal the final blow to KoS. "Jemandem die Lichter ausknipsen" is kinda funny, since it literally means "to turn someone's lights out" (to kill someone)
2."Wir vom Königreich der Wissenschaft sagen danke und auf Wiedersehen, die Show muss weitergehen."
->"We from the Kingdom of Science say thank you and goodbye, the show has to continue."
This is a cute reference to a tv show. The original is "Wir sagen danke und auf Wiedersehen, doch die Show muss weitergehen" and is a line from the ending song of Bugs Bunny. Senku says this after they "steal" the broken plane from Stanley, thanking him indirectly with that line.
3."Das ist ja wie Weihnachten und Ostern zugleich!"
->"That's like christmas and eastern at the same time!"
Ryusui says this after Kohaku finds corn on the broken plane.
4."Ich frag nicht wen wir verfolgen sondern wen wir schicken... frag für'n Freund..."
->"I don't ask who we're following but who we're sending.... asking for a friend..."
Another one of Gen's hilarious lines. He says this after Senku declares that someone needs to follow Stanley.
5."Das ist ja ne schöne scheiße in der wir jetzt stecken. Im Kampf hätte selbst ein Maiskorn mehr Chancen als Senku."
->"This is some great shit we're in now. Even corn would have more chances in a fight than Senku."
Gen again. This is the line he says before he tells Stan and Xeno, that Taiju is the great scientist of their group. I find it hilarious that he compares Senku to corn.
Basically the whole conversation between Xeno and Stan. The main essence is the same as the english one, but the nuances are a lil bit different.
Xeno: "Fangen wir doch mit dem Typen an, der es aus irgendeinem Grund liebt, Giftstoffe zu inhalieren."
->"Let's start with the guy who, for some reason, loves to inhale toxic substances."
"Typ" is very colloquial. It seemed a bit unusual for Xeno, since his normal speech pattern is obviously not very colloquial.
Stan:"Halt's Maul Mann. Das sind Zigaretten, mehr nich."
->"Shut your trap man. Those are cigarettes nothing more."
I choose "trap" as translation, since "Maul" is a very crude way to call someone's mouth. Usually you call the mouth of an animal a "Maul". What I find interesting is, that Stanley only talks to Xeno this way. His subordinates never hear him talk like that. Maybe the translators thought it would be good to show that those two are very close? Because teenagers use it in a fun way to mock each other. Even I do that sometimes with my closer friends. Very interesting in my opinion.
Xeno:"Oh, hast du das gehört Stan? Das ist ja großartig. Sie haben ihren Weg wie Columbus zu uns gefunden. Nur diese Mal vom Land der aufgehenden Sonne aus.
->"Oh, did you hear that Stan? This is magnificent. Just like Columbus, they have found their way to us. Only this time from the country of the rising sun."
Almost the same as the english version. I like the mention of "the country of the rising sun" though. Makes Xenos speech a bit more formal or professional in my opinion.
I actually found a short compilation where they put one of the sentences from above. Also here you can see how the german dub implemented some english sentences in between, to show that KoS canonically speaks english with at least Stanley and co. I think Xeno knows Japanese right?
Enough with my rambling though. I'll try to get back to writing as soon as possibl.... after rewatching season 4 another 5 times xD
